HTC EVO 4G gets rooted before release

General

htc-evo-root

Just days after Google handed out an EVO 4G to every attendee of I/O 2010, a team of three hackers have managed to successfully root the phone with 11 days to spare. Details about how the root was achieved are being withheld, out of fear of a last minute patch, but that doesn’t mean that ranking members of the Android Army can’t get their freak on watching a YouTube video of the root at work. Click on through for the video.

Thanks, Salty!

    horrible camera, but cool nonetheless

    Define “rooted”

    • webby

Rooted = Custom Android 2.2 Roms will quickly become available on the web for rooted EVO phones, many months before HTC gets around to releasing an official 2.2 update.

Same story when Android 2.3 releases in Q4 2010.

      • Scorpeo

I wouldn’t say many months, the EVO is one of several HTC devices getting 2.2 by the 2nd half of this year, the EVO will be getting 2.2 soon after release. This has been confirmed by HTC.

Rooted = Jail Broken, pretty much hacked so the full potential of the phone is available to be taken advantage of

    • Gambit

“Rooted = jailbroken”… kinda… but you don’t need to root an android to get unpurchased apps on it. All you have to do is check the “download from unknown sources” box and find the app in a google search.

  • Perspective

You can’t beat that open-source security. I guess when Google says Android is “open,” they really mean it.

    • julian

can’t beat that closed source security of apple ether i guess thats why everyone calls bullshit on apple,

apple:”we use propriety technology to keep you secure and allow the best user experience!”

user base:” F@ck you, we want copy and past and multi tasking, so were breaking your security….[15 minutes latter]… done GFY”

Awesome. Still waiting on tmo to announce their uber phone.

    • block pajama

The Samsung Galaxy S has already been rumored to be on the #4 carrier ….. i want to see the Droid Incred, next to a 1Ghrtz phone with a slide out keyboard….. Verizon can’t touch that shit.

    • FML

Tmo already announced it. The MyTouch Slide for $180 after a $50 rebate. ROFL.

      • block pajama

The Galaxy S not the My Touch Slide…

OPEN YOUR EYES AND READ…… #fail.

Can’t wait to get the phone and some hot 2.2 action on this beast. Great news!

  • FML

Now that I know we can root this thing, I’m 100% on board!! Sprint, here I come!

  • Dan

I can smell the Vanilla FroYo 2.2 ROMs being cooked as I type this…

  • Wayne Holbrook

I have to assume the Evo will be available on GSM within 90 days, at least I hope so. I want to try this bad boy out. I havent yet tried a driod device, i’m using an iphone but i keep an open mind. I look forward to trying this out in a gsm capacity.

    • StevenGlansburg

even if it is available with GSM, it won’t have American 3G for any carrier. HTC knows to fuck that up.

    • Scorpeo

This is Sprints baby, HTC, Sprint and Google spent two years designing the EVO. There will be no EVO (or like device) on GSM.

      • StevenGlansburg

You kidding me? They will just call it something else. And two years? You kidding me?

  • Flubber Gasket

    • SKINNI

That really chaps my hide! I never rooted my DROID & picked up the INCREDIBLE immediately. Now i want to root & cant. & the EVO is already done!

      • StevenHamburg

        i’m proud of you SKINNI.

      • SKINNI

Thanks Stevo! Im a changed man! Well not so much but Im fair & negotiable……

  • phonelover

  • JigglyWiggly

Stop being lame and release the exploit :P
I already got mine at the conference I need rooting :)

  • mpowerd

Ok, i guess I’ll be “that guy” – notice the use of an APPLE MACBOOK to root it?? It’s funny because indirectly El Stevo ‘helped’ fandroids. Lol!

    • StevenHamburg

probably because not all “fandroids” are completely closed minded and hate all apple products.
side note: i prefer win7, but os x is pretty sick too.

“Being withheld out fear of a Last minute patch”

So i guess these idiots dont realize they jus posted a video and im Sure sumone from Google or Sprint Checks this site now and then. The gig is…or will be up soon.

    • blenderman345

Google doesn’t care. It’ll void your warranty, but they don’t care.

  • Robert S.

So, what exactly can you do with a “rooted” EVO the you can’t do with an un-rooted one? Just curious.

    • Rooted Froyo N1

FREE TETHERING! That’s reason enough for me!

      • FML

        Tethering??? splain please

      • none

free tethering, where did you see that?
all the sprint literature says tethering not included in the plan

  • RAWR

ya’ll should’ve waited to post this.. you basically just ruined it for everybody.. stupid..

    • b00dah

@RAWR… why is it so stupid… Do you honestly think that a mass patch is going to make its way out to these phones? Don’t hold her breath… at least for a few months.

  • Weapondrift

    AHEM!!!!!!!!!!!! INCREDIBLE ROOT ANYONE?!!!!!! HELLOO!!!!!!

  • b00dah

All that sweet technical swag just GUTTED by a worthless camera job. I love the fact that they rooted the EeeeeEEEEEEEVO…

  • http://h jigglywiggly
