Apple discontinuing Apple iPhone 3G 8GB?

Whisper

A move that is sure to surprise few, we suppose. We’ve heard that Apple has stopped shipping iPhone 3G 8GB units to AT&T stores and orders are not being placed for the device. Could this mean we might see the iPhone 3GS drop to $99 and make way for a new model? Or maybe the 3GS would disappear altogether? We’re not sure, but we’re about to find out…

Just make them all disappear, please!

best buy just had the 3g for free with a new contract. not sure if it was just the 8gb or both the 8 and 16. but whatever, they must have wanted to get their stocks of them down for some reason… and having something replace them is a good reason…

W/the new redesign of the phone (if it’s official) the price of the older models should br even less. Like when you get a used car, & the newer models looks different… just my 2¢…

Good Bye… 3G. Your story is Historic !

Video conferencing, and I’m in. If not, I’m waiting for a WP7 device. It’s a good time to be a phone fanatic!

    • StevenGlansburg

WP7 is going to be sweet. I know it will. I’m really debating holding off on any of these newer high end phones and seeing how those two Dell ones which are supposed to be released in the fall turn out.

Only about 2 months till your 2nd birthday, 8G iPhone 3G. Hope you enjoy the party… for your new younger and hotter sibling, the 4G.
Awww, don’t cry. I’m sure you will be just fine in the hands of all the nice looking people at the pawn shops and on craigslist.

  • Mattie

The new iPhone wont be called the 4G. There are no 4G networks here in America prepared for 4G specific devices only. Be expecting a name like Iphone 3G HD or something along those lines.

    • StevenGlansburg

3G is such an overused buzz word. I hope they use something different this time around…

    • Me

“iPhone 4G” as in iPhone 4th Generation, just like ipods are called. so of course no 4G network :)

  • caffesilvia

I don’t really get the hype. The new iPhone will have a screen that is the same size or even smaller than the current iPhone, right? That would be enough to kill it for me right there. There are way more attractive devices on the market. It looks like Apple got complacent with its past successes on this one.

The Nexus One already makes the iPhone look really outdated (side by side – I compared them extensively). And even the N1 itself is getting eclipsed by other devices. Apple needs to ramp its products up rather dramatically, and soon, or it is going to lose a lot of market share in the next few years.

    • awm

You need to compare the NEW iPhone coming out this June with the Nexus One and not with the iPhone 3GS that is one year old…

    • Gary

Ya, that is why the Nexus One is the number one selling Android Phone NOT. Have they sold 100K yet?

  • caffesilvia

Yes, but: the N1 already has a bigger screen than the NEW iPhone. And other devices like the EVO 4G are going to shame the N1′s screen

Screen size is one of the big problems with the iPhone, in my opinion, because Apple insists on putting all of the controls in the display area. It gives a lot less space to view information. I’ve completely stopped playing with my iPod Touch for that reason…

    • Roy

You want BIG size phone …get a iPAD. If the screen is too big they lose mobility. I use phone for a purpose not as a fancy device to show off.

  • Crunch

Well, that’s consistent with Walmart going to offer the 16GB 3GS for $97 starting 5/25.

The calm before the storm that is the annual new-iPhone-month has begun.

  • caffesilvia

Ew, the ipad really is an overgrown phone (that can’t make calls). Very lackluster device.

Apple should be aiming for about 4-4.3″ on the iPhone display. At that size, browsing is actually enjoyable. And there is NO loss of portability if the phone is designed well. (Unfortunately, the iPhone is very wasteful because it has an enormous top/bottom bezel and because it has no dedicated navigation buttons.)

    • tawanda

@ caffesilvia The top bezel houses the speaker. The bottom bezel gives you someplace to put your thumb — otherwise you’d be pushing buttons when you hold it, unless you cradle it like a piece of toast.

And if you think an iPad is “an overgrown phone,” clearly you don’t own one.

  • AussieMacMan

The Australian Apple store has been out of stock of the 8GB iPhone for about 2 weeks. Just noticed that this week the US store is also out of stock and so is one of the UK telco’s. So I would say that it is being replaced come WWDC10.

  • steve

DERP, this happens every time a new iPhone is released… How tarded do we have to be not to confirm there’s a new iPhone coming out next month. It’s happened EVERY JUNE FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS, and each year they knock off the generation 2 years prior.

This is good news for users sitting on a 3G phones with replacement plans at places like Best Buy. You’ll end up with a free upgrade to the 3GS once the existing stock runs out.

  • caffesilvia

I can’t imagine why or how you’d hold the iPhone by its wasted top/bottom space. Don’t your fingers just curl around the sides?

I HAD an iPad, which I bought during the initial frenzy. I returned it. I found the browser to be really slow (not what Apple had advertised at all). It just felt like a dumbed-down toy that I couldn’t really DO anything with. Also, I found it very uncomfortable to use. I don’t think I’ll be interested in any other tablets either, even if they run “real” software.

  • baghdad_azz_up

hahaha it’s hilarious reading some of these comments. Especially since half of you people that claim the iPhone is garbage, WISH that it was available on your network so you could have one. Instead you’re probably downloading porn through your slow WAP browser on your Samsung Instinct. Grow up and give credit where credit is due. Don’t criticize a great device because you can’t get one.

I love many different devices because I truly appreciate the work and R&D put into making them.
