Samsung: OLED shortage will continue as demand swells

Speaking at the Reuters Global Technology Summit on Thursday, Lee Wong-jong, VP of marketing for Samsung, said that the global shortage of OLED displays will continue in foreseeable future as demand has greatly outpaced supply. Said Lee, ”demand for high-end displays is very strong and we may continue to fail to meet all customer requirements, even after expanding capacity by seven-fold, until next year.” Such delays are part of the reason Verizon is having great difficulties meeting sales quotas with the HTC Droid Incredible. Last week Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said the failure of Samsung and other part suppliers to deliver crucial components were the reason the Droid Incredible has yet to outsell the Motorola DROID. To combat this, Samsung recently committed $2.15 billion through 2012 to create the largest fleet of AMOLED displays. But in the meantime, delays will be the new reality as smartphone sales for 2010 are expected to be 50% higher than in 2009.

Having BOGO on the Moto Droid also helps it stay in head of the Incredible.

Perhaps there’s another manufacture that can “hack it”! :)

So good thing that Evo uses TFT, it wont be shortage?. I am not too crazy with OLED anyway cause it’s hard to see the screen under sun light. Super AMOLED is the future.
I cant see my screen outside cause OLED. I am glad HTC decides to go with TFT because it will void shortage of OLED screen supply and its readable outside under sun light. :-)

Well then it’s a fail on HTC’s part if they decide to even put these screens in it’s future phones! In this day and age when smart phones are becoming more common then ever, the last thing u need is a company that can’t produce the needed quanity. And to be honest they suck!

Such a convenient problem to have, especially with the EU on your tail for memory price fixing.
