HTC: Your 2010 Android smartphone will "likely" get FroYo

General

htc-logo

Have a new Android smartphone from HTC? Obsessing over whether or not it will get an official FroYo plus Sense UI update? Well fear not, because HTC has issued a statement to sooth your panic-stricken soul. Unfortunately, it’s so vague that it actually raises more questions than it answers. According to HTC:

[...] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.

Most likely? Uh oh. We’re hoping that the shadows of doubt placed upon the Desire, Droid Incredible, EVO 4G and myTouch 3G Slide can be attributed to poor choice of words, but what about the Legend? Better yet, what about the Sprint Hero (October 2009) or the Verizon Droid Eris (November 2009)? If you thought people put up a stink about how long it took the Sprint Hero to get bumped up to Android 2.1, prepare yourself. There’s no telling what the Android Army is capable of.

I want vanilla FroYo on my Incredible!

    • Norm

You will most likely be able to get a nexus one rom shortly after the nexus gets froyo, probably before most other devices get their ota

      • ZPrime

Not likely. As of this point in time the Incredible’s bootloader hasn’t been hacked and nobody has root through any other exploits either. Until they root the phone via a hack, or find some work-around to exploit the bootloader (and get it to load an un-signed update), you won’t be able to run any 3rd party ROMs on the Incredible.

  • John Ellenich

This is why I won’t be buying an Android device in the near future… who knows what the manufacturer decides to support and when they’ll release it (if ever).

    • Oh Hell Yea

Ok. Enjoy your Iphone. You can buy a brand new Iphone every year to go with the new OS update. Steve will be happy if you do that.

      • Scott

Not true Sir. My 3G came with the release of 2.0. I got all of those features. Then, a year later, we got 3.0, and I got all of those features. In July, my phone will be 2 years old, and while yes, it will only get some of the new updates of 4.0, it’s still getting an update 2 years later. I’m with John Ellenich, once Android can pull that off, then I will gladly switch.

      • Norm

        Can you record video?

      • MikeD

Yep, just look in the app store.

        iVideoCamera

        Qik Video Camera

        iCamcorder

        Camera Plus Pro

        and many more.

        No jailbreak necessary.

      • Josh

While I am still going to get an EVO, this it one of the reasons that I would have prefered an N1, so that I could be sure that I could get the latest updates and all the features. I have a sneaking suspicion that the carriers will disable some of FroYo’s key features like tethering and mobile hotspot.

      • MikeD

Thats why I thought they still should have offered it on Verizon. A bunch of people would have bought it just for the fact that they would expect iPhone like multi-year support of a Google branded device.

      • hamburgalar

yea it can record video. its called cycorecorder which is a jailbreak app

      • Joe B.

With the Iphone getting supported for 3 years with updates of the OS adding new features that sounds pretty damn impressive. That is until you realize that with all those updates the Iphone is still lacking numerous functionality and features that all the Android phones have right now. Android has been releasing OS updates roughly every 2 months with Android since December. Will the 4th generation Iphone finally get a long awaited cutting edge feature like a flash for their camera?

      • OpenSourceIsJustaPhrase

Android phones lack in a decent App store, which I now argue makes a phone. Apple’s App store kills.

      • mezmryz03

Android has a great app store! It is full of great apps and a bunch of crap just like the iPhone/iPod store. It’s true that Apple has many more apps, but with the momentum Android is gaining, Googles store will be every bit as tempting to code for as Apples’.

      • sal

What support are you talking about? The first gen iphone does not have 3megapixel camera and you can’t record from it. In addition, to the lack of 3g speed. Is that the support that you are talking about?

      • sal

Yes, your phone will not support alot of things. So your getting rapped by steve jobs. Keep fooling yourself because your stuck with ATT.

      • Scott

I choose AT&T because they’re the best provider in my area. Yeah… suck it! Been with them 6 years

      • MikeD

Hmm let me see. The Original iPhone got 3 years of support. Name an Android phone that did?

        . . .

        I’m still waiting? . . .

While its the cool factor for all these Android rushing minor updates every 3 months, the support over the LONG HAUL is abysmal. It now looking like possible 6 months and thats it for support.

I am waiting to see if the Incredible (Which is a good phone) can get 2 years of support Let alone eek out a year.

I guess you think supporting an Android device for two years is a really bad thing. I find it hard to believe that most Android users think that way.

      • sal

Why do you need support. Apple just got the MMS feature after 2.5 years. No recording for the first 2 years,Camera sucks, battery sucks and the warrenty lasts 1 year unless you pay $90 for the second year. Android phones come with all these features plus it has a removable battery. What are you going to do when your battery dies? You gonna cry like a little girl. Hahaaa

      • MikeD

        Sal,

You obviously are a child. Sal its fine if you like your droid. but running around thinking people using other devices are crying over this BS? You obviously got some growing up to do. What matters is can people communicate. i have an iPhone and can email to a receive emails from my good friend that has a Droid Incredible. We share files over Dropbox. We a lot of the same apps like Cardstar, NYTimes, AP News, AIM, Yahoo and so on. I have a two year old phone, he has a 1 month old. Not much a difference in what we are doing. Fanboys on Apple and Googles side need to grow up and stop arguing the dumb points that don’t matter in real life.

        Anyways…

Less ten 5% of gadget buyers actually buy extra batteries. So you FAIL.

        I’ll reference Walt Mossberg again,

        - – - – -
But there’s a dirty little secret about removable-battery laptops owned by average consumers: Hardly anybody buys extra batteries. Research firm NPD estimates that fewer than 5% of consumers buy a spare. So, a small trend has begun in the industry: More electronic products are being designed with their rechargeable batteries sealed inside. For instance, Dell’s (DELL) new high-end laptop, the Adamo, has a sealed battery, as does the excellent Flip pocket video camera.

Even Google is planning to slow down their upgrades. Less frequency but bigger updates. Why because they plan the realize they have to improve these roll outs. And possibly be able to a same date roll out for all Android devices still supported at the time. Plus the added benefit is the software will be done right.

Wanna understand more read this non-fanboy article at CNBC about the battery issue. see below:

        - – - – - – - -

If there’s a single knock for just about anything mobile nowadays, it’s battery life. Laptops, netbooks, smart phones, you name it. And the more these companies try to cram into these devices, the bigger the drain on the juice.

The issue took center stage at the big Google [GOOG 479.34 4.33 (+0.91%) ] Zeitgeist event in London yesterday when Google co-founder Larry Page proclaimed that if your Android phone isn’t giving you 24 hours of usage, there’s something wrong.

But instead of taking ownership of the issue, and taking responsibility for a platform that doesn’t adequately power-manage all the software his phones can run, Page committed the cardinal sin of blaming Google’s third party applications developers instead.

It’s their programs, and users running them all the time that suck up all that juice, not our phone.

        Oy.

        http://www.cnbc.com/id/37236488

        – - – - – - – -

I am amazed at the blind hate at the fact that Apple is addressing the battery issue regarding multitasking, but only Android fans seem to think this is a bad thing? Hell a 10 to 12 hr battery life on a iPad is a bad thing to them too. This proves the irrational hate that just seems to consume them.

Geeks seem not to care if something is done right. Just give it to me now attitude brings disasters. Google wisely knows this and is slowing it down, so maybe in the near future you can get the same value out of an Adroid device that iPhone and Blackberry users get. Know you’ll be FULLY SUPPORTED over the life of your wireless contract by you Smartphone manufacturer means a lot.

When you grow up you’ll understand that if you are putting important information/data on your device, you pure and simply want DEPENDABILITY. Google slowing down the turn around will ensure more dependable and broader updates. If Android devices are so good why is it that they seem to be considered useless in 3 months. While the Blackberry and iPhone can be reasonably respected and used for YEARS.

So Sal, actually the more reasonable Android, iPhone and other smartphone users aren’t crying over anything. Its the immature geeks like you that are. And y’know what thats a shame. LOL

      • Stang68

Wait…you keep a phone for 2 years? What are you doing posting on BGR? Bwahahahaha!

      • Scott

Because I’m a college student that’s on a limited budget and is more into getting pussy than worrying about saving money to afford every new phone. I just like tech

      • Patrick Moto Droid

Although that may be true for some Android phones, it still remains to be seen. With the platform only being on the market for 16mos, more phones are running 2.1 than any other version. Also time will tell which manufacturers are serious about keeping their OS up to date. But again, that is the advantage of choice, something the iphone desperately lacks. And please, save your breath when it comes to the 200,000 apps, just like Android, most of the apps are redundant and more than that are worthless. I have about 70 apps on my Droid, I can’t imagine that that is not enough. Name 70 things you need an app for…in one post.

      • jgoitom

no its not going to get two years of support because there are a lot of Android product out there to support. An a tone more to come this year so you can’t support that many devices well android is great but that were they might have a down fall but maybe not cause there is one thing a tech person love is choice and apple just do not give you that.

      • http://www.facebook.com/numetheus Christopher Cox

The thing is, the moment you buy your Android device it will be out of date within a month of your purchase. This forces you to buy another device anyway where you most likely will have to do work to migrate your stuff to the completely new device. If you don’t feel like upgrading your outdated phone, you might hear news that the new Android may NOT be available for your device, leaving it stale or forcing you to rely on the hacker community for your updates.

At least with my iPhone I get a refresh in hardware every year and I have have 0 downtime. I simply sync my old phone, restore the backup on the new one and voila! Its my old phone with my old software with new hardware. When I get the new iPhone 4g it will work the same way. I will take an hour of sitting on my ass waiting for a restore to happen … then I’m out the door not having to worry about missing ANYTHING.

I would much rather get hardware refreshes every year with the same device than go stale or force me to configure yet another device. I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of configuring phones every year.

      • Ethan

I love how you love Planned Obsolescence.

You really think Apple releases an updated phone every year, because they know people get bored with it?

They put the least amount of new features in each one they make to make you come back again and again to get more features that even the simplest phones have had for years.

Why else did it take Apple, 4 generations to get flash for the camera? If they are the technology masters so many say they are it would have been on the very first Iphone. It’s all about the bottom line and let me tell you, Apple is the master at it and I applaud them. I won’t ever get sucked into it, but from a stock point of view its beautiful $$$$$$$$$$.

      • Sonya

My whole point about Apple well said, to me its like they are playing me stupid, they came out with one bad ass phone 3 years ago and now look where it is today as far advancement goes, it has barely took a step in breaking new features. For people who are not into technology like that its fine, but for people like us Apple has really disappointed me. They are capable of SO much more and choose to get add little stuff here and there because no matter what people will still buy it. Apple, you don’t fool me. I will get an iPhone when it is once again the best phone on the market, because as of now it has lost its title, especially when Froyo comes out its a done deal.

      • Patrick Moto Droid

        The only people that think an Android device is outdated by the next release are;
a-people who bought the wrong phone and
b-people that don’t own an Android phone
your argument is lame because if it were true, everyone who bought an iPhone 2g or 3g, bought outdated equipment with the release of iPhone 3gs. My argument is that by design, all iPhones are outdated by any Android running. Period. And when the new iPhone 4g drops, they will be “Outdating”, by your standards, the millions of phones they have sold so far. And if you are on a Blackberry, god help you. The only way a Blackberry user doesn’t feel left out is because they are ALL left out.
How exactly are you configuring a device. And if you hate it so much, why buy a new phone every year?

      • Patrick Moto Droid

And with an Android device, you don’t even need to plug it in when you get a new one. Google updates the phone for you. Contacts, paid apps, and some free apps too. All waiting for you the minute you type in your email address on the startup screen.Plug it in…really? And your iPhone only updates to the last time you PLUGGED IT IN, so 90′s

      • Christopher Cox

You have obviously never used an iPhone. Google sync will wirelessly sync contacts and calendaring, and even provide push email.

      • Christopher Cox

You don’t need to plug in the iPhone for anything. We buy apps online and get our music the same way. We get music, rent high def movies as soon as they come out, and even buy them. We sync our contacts and calendar free with google. All without wires. What I can do with my iPhone that you can’t do is have my iPhone act as full media tv device out of the box. If a new movie gets released I can immediately go to iTunes and rent it for $2 for wireless download, then plug it into my dock with the tv cables. My wireless apple remote let’s me control my movie watching from my couch. Do all that with android. Have it be your wireless media center. Go ahead. Show me you can easily do this with android out of the box.

      • jgoitom

but with the new Froyo update that is no more data transfer will be just as easy. ha got to love it

    • Jnl813

Thats why you get the Nexus One, it will always get the updates, its the Official Google Phone! I got it and love it!

      • Nexus-Droid

I am practically checking my phone for update every 5 hours now. I got my Nexus One on T-mobile even more plus plan so I would be one of the firsts to get the update.

      • Stang68

They said a few weeks. Sorry.

      • http://www.facebook.com/numetheus Christopher Cox

Nexus is already outdated. Every upcoming android phone surpasses it, and the new iPhone 4G will own it. Why get an old clunky phone with yesterdays specs when Android phones like EVO are out? I predict Google will stop selling Nexus One soon.

      • Semi Constructive Criticism

when you say outdated what exactly do you mean? are you talking about hardware or software? because every phone’s hardware, including your beloved iPhone, is outdated by the time you leave the store with it. thats just the pace that tech is at these days. the iPhone 3Gs was outdated along time ago and the iPhone 4G will be outdated by some other new phone with a faster processor that is released soon after it, those are facts that you need to face.

And if you are talking about outdated software then you’re completely wrong and clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. The N1 and the Droid get updates before any other phones because they are vanilla Android.

Oh, and just so you know, Google is already working on the N2, which in your words “will own” the iPhone 4g if we use your logic since it will be coming out after after it.

At least you have multitasking to look forward to when you get iPhone OS 4.0… oh wait i have that on my outdated Droid…

    • sal

At lease they are not like apple. Every year they release a new iphone and that new feature does not support the older phones. Apple just wants to make the easy cash that is why Android phones are outselling them.

      • Scott

Exactly, you’ve got to buy a new phone every 3 months to get the new OS.

      • Semi Constructive Criticism

Ugh ignorance is bliss for you isn’t it? The only phones that have trouble updating are low end crappy phones and HTC phones (because of the Sense UI), and even the HTC are now getting updated because they worked out the Sense issue finally but they are all slated to get 2.2 to eliminate the fragmentation. Google is aware of the problem and is fixing it. Oh, and My Droid has the most up to date OS so go back to your iPhone since you have no idea what you are talking about. Here is some advise for you that my great grandfather used to give to people similar to yourself,

Its better to keep quiet and be thought a fool than open your mouth and confirm it.

You, sir, have just confirmed it.

  • Laz

    How about the Sexy Nexy?

  • jayrodathome

You mean there’s a chance my incredible could get better? Hard to believe.

Where’s my bgr android app! You “should work closely” with HTC and get it programmed into the build!

  • Want2CBetter

Buy the phone happy with what it has and assuming no upgraded OS’s are coming in the future. If you live hoping for the next, biggest OS, you will never get a new phone.

  • clamknuckle

What mythical device is out there that I’m obviously missing that gets meaningful updates every week? Most devices are lucky to get one meaningful update a year, maybe two over the life of your contract.

The Hero and Eris got 2.1 at a pretty good pace if you ask me, considering it’s only been out 5 months. Sure, the phones launched last year, but 2.1 didnt.

Get out of here with this stupid argument. You should buy a phone based on what it can do when you get it, not what it might be able to do some day in the future.

  • FG

This is EXACTLY why I got the Nexus One!!!

  • 1967ls2

    Jesus H Christ!!!
The Incredible is an amazing phone, PERIOD.
If it gets the FroYo 2.2 then it will be even beter, PERIOD.
If it doesn’t get the update then so what, it’s still a sweet phone but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t, it’s just a matter of time.
The iphone is an amazing phone that started the whole smartphone movement in the mainstream public, PERIOD.
The iphone sees updates once a year along with a new model once a year.
Just be happy if you are an Android user and you get an update sooner than one year of purchase.

    • Scott

It’s not the 90′s anymore dude. Phones and smart phones specifically, have evolved. There are now between 1-many updates per OS each year. So you’re telling me, as a consumer, that if I buy a phone on launch day and in 6 months, there’s an update, but my phone doesn’t get it, that’s fine? I don’t think it is, considering most people are locked into a 2 year contract.

    • Matt Thompson

I’m pretty sure RIM did it with the BlackBerries-of-late. My first “smartphone” was a BlackBerry 8100. Launch day, 2006. Then the G1/Dream, launch day 2008. Before that, I was fascinated with my friend’s BB 7000-something series.

So yeah, I’d give RIM the credit.

  • webby

I am concerned that the EVO is coming out with 2.1 when 2.2 is almost, out, and I don’t live in a 4G area, but I like everything else about the phone so much, that I am probably getting it anyway.

I seem to get a new Android phone quite frequently anyway, so I may not still own the EVO by the time it gets 2.2. I may have moved on to my next Android phone.

  • winston smith

who cares about the sprint hero, what about the original hero in Europe? it came out 4 months before sprints version and it’s still waiting to get the 2.1 update. first htc said it would get it in febuary, then march, April, may, and now June. I love htc products they’re top of the line, but when it comes to them making statements about software upgrades for their products don’t hold your breath. I’ll believe it when I see it.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • StevenGlansburg

Bahahahahahahahahaahahaha. I won’t be seeing much past 2.1 on my Cliq. At least with the iphone you get 3-4 updates a year….

    • Buffy Jones

“with the iphone you get 3-4 updates a year”

Maybe Jobs should try to do it right the first time.

  • Gag

This should be more of a firm promise from HTC. I also think that talking about the EVO and instantly making it look outdated at a keynote about a successor to its operating system was not the smartest thing that Google could have done. Honestly, Froyo is the one Android update that really has me excited yet until we really see a breakthrough device with service to match, basically an EVO with better battery life/Froyo or Gingerbread and a network with great download speeds to boot, I don’t think Android will truly be mainstream. I don’t see people getting their grandmas Android phones.

Computers started out with the MS model of OEM’s getting a licensed OS but smartphones started out with the opposite model, manufacturers making their own OS’s and that’s not only how the market started but how the market has been defined. Microsoft tried with WinMo what Google is trying with Android and they failed but then again, they’re not nearly as competent as Google is. Then again, they weren’t smart enough to rip off Apple like Google was either.

I honestly like Apple’s model, because it prevents the fragmentation that Android currently suffers from. Stable hardware and stable software with a consistent and reliable curve of improvement and release. The fundamental problem with Android is that you can buy an Android phone and it’s irrelevant in 3 months. Absolutely irrelevant. People with Incredibles and EVO’s will be ROFLing at Nexus users and then soon enough, yet another product will emerge from the Android puppy mill that will put everyone to shame. Until Google, HTC, and the rest of the Android powers fix this, Android is never going to be truly mainstream.

    • Ethan

I honestly don’t worry at all about my (future) EVO being out of date because I HIGHLY DOUBT Sprint is going to let their “savour phone” to not get a fresh update, besides what makes the phone not capable to update. It’s high tech built over kill.

      • StevenGlansburg

Sprint is in talks of switching from WiMax to LTE already.. they just might be outdated soon…

      • Ethan

Well that effects me how? I’m in an area where 4G WiMax is never going to get to me in the next couple of years anyway. I’m getting the EVO not for the 4G but because it’s best smartphone. LTE doesn’t matter to me since it’s still several years till its almost to where 3G is now… So in 2012 I’ll go back to Verizon, till then I’m going to enjoy an amazing phone on a network that is cheaper for me.

      • StevenGlansburg

If I were to buy an EVO it wouldn’t be for the 4G either. I just figured you might wanna consider that rumor since it’s still 10 dollars more a month even if you are trying to go just 3G. I’m sure it will fly on 3G, faster processor means faster everything really.

  • Clint

Some people don’t seem to realize the android phones coming out every 3 months is just a side effect of other manufactures making garbage/inferior products for so long.

Give Android phones about 1 more year and both the hardware and the software will have stabilized. As they refocus on hardware refinement vs lack of hardware you will see them turn to the app world more.
At that point a push to clean up the app catalogue will occur.
Apple will be struggling to match software & hardware.

  • WinstonLu

Those pinche chinos ain’t too good with the English language. So sorry.

  • Brad

I highly doubt the Hero/Eris will get Froyo. The reason I say that is because Froyo will have full Adobe Flash integrated into it, and we’ve already been told that those devices will not be receiving Flash, due to the lack of powerful enough hardware. However, if you’re a Hero or Eris owner, and were smart enough to get a 1-year contract, you’ll be eligible for upgrade soon enough. September 9th is my upgrade date for the Droid Incredible (Verizon lets you upgrade two months before a 1-year contract expires).

  • Matt Thompson

*taps the desk, looks at his G1*

    -_-

  • D-man

Froyo will come sooner than updates in the past. I’m sure Google, the carriers, and HTC want the Froyo updates released before they get into WPS phones and the new headaches it will bring.

Whether features are disabled or not will likely be the hangup, but only temporarily. I believe that’s one reason why the carriers dropped N1 – they conceded somehow that Froyo and future updates would not have major delays due to carrier/OEM desires.

    We’ll see ….

  • Roger

$100 says no FroYo before Christmas for Verizon customers.

    • jgoitom

i have too second that because verizon is the worse when it comes too software update they are all ways the last one too the game.
