Official Twitter clients are getting an awful lot of love today. This morning, Twitter relaunched and re-branded Tweetie 2 as Twitter for iPhone 3, and just a little while ago the good folks at RIM were nice enough to let us know that the revamped version of Twitter for BlackBerry is en route. The new version, which will stay in beta, has a slew of new and user-requested features, including:

Quote Tweets

  • Ability to edit ReTweets

Auto Complete for @ usernames

  • When you type an “@” followed by characters, the auto complete feature pops up a list of users as you type

View Geotagged Tweets

  • View locations of geotagged tweets on BlackBerry Maps

Personal Info Guard

  • Warning appears when sharing personal information (e.g. email address, PIN, phone number)

Hotkeys for Navigation

  • New hotkey functionality has been added for lists, find people, etc.
  • R reply, L reply all, Space page down, F retweet, C compose, D refresh, Alt+0 (home), alt+1 (mentions), alt+2 (lists), alt+3 (profile), alt+4 (inbox), alt+5 (find people), alt+6 (search), alt+7 (popular topics).

Go to User

  • Ability to access any users profile from anywhere in the application using auto-complete functionality for followers

Additional photo viewing support

The new Twitter for BlackBerry code is set to roll out “over the course of tonight and Thursday” according to RIM’s PR team, and requirements include: a 64 MB BlackBerry smartphone, Twitter account (duh!), and OS 4.5 or higher. Who’s excited?

Once T4BB supports multiple accounts, this will be *the* Twitter app to beat.

About time BlackBerry caught up with Android phones

I wonder if there are any improvements in battery life. I installed the app and it’s a total battery suck. I have even adjusted the “check in” delay to 1 hr with no luck.

I have to admit, I never “got” twitter. So you want to update your status in 140 characters or less whenever you want to…..ok. Less than a text message.

I suppose the attraction is making your status updates sent out to many people in one shot instead of hitting an address book or normal sms forward limit.

What really boggles my mind is this whole level of exhibitionism on the Internet that people seem to flock to lately. It boggles the mind.

I do not tweet. Never have, definitely never will.

Rate me down. You need to get out more often. Twitter is stupid. Sorry.

    • StevenGlansburg

I couldn’t agree more. If I want news I will check out cnn.com. If I wanna know what my real friends are doing, I will call or text them, and most importantly I don’t care what Ashton Kutcher is doing or what cause he cares about for the day.

    • FRZ

I felt the same way, and then I took my head out of my @ss.

I don’t understand how you can comment on something that you never ‘got’ or used. It’s not so much about a simple ‘status update’ than it is about creating a platform that allows just about anyone to take advantage of its services.

How people can judge or give opinion on a certain topic without really knowing it’s basic uses and workings is much like a lawyer who’s done absolutely no research before the big case, but who shows up thinking he can thwart the competition through wit (and insult) in the exact same manner you did.

Let’s be real here – Twitter doesn’t have millions upon millions of users because it’s ‘stupid’ – ‘Sorry’.

Twitter is great when you are watching sports. If something controversial comes up or there is a spectacular play, its cool to see what other fans think. Just do a search for the team name or the player and within 30s of it happening there are already people tweeting their thoughts.

Of course I am against twitter for the whole “I’m putting my shoes on now,” which is what most uneducated people think that Twitter’s sole purpose is for.

      • Joey

FRZ, a lot of stupid things have a lot of fans. NASCAR. Twilight. Bon Jovi.

      • btdown

It has a million users, cause a million people are stupid. Twitter is not new or novel–it already exists. Congratulations twitter, you invented a shorter email or text message. Congratulations facebook, you created a web board, and/or created the same functionality a phone call or email would have accomplished.
I don’t get this whole goofy ass movement which I have now named ‘generation nitwit’. As far as I’m concerned they should all go back to AOL from when they spawned.

    • btdown

Its this whole younger “look at me”, attention whore generation. Previous generation(s) went to great lengths to HIDE their identify on the internet, while this one keeps inventing stupid ways to exploit themselves (i.e. facebook).

  • kyle

Is there a business side to twitter or is it all “just took a shit, now watching tv” kind of junk? Because if that’s all it is then why the fuck do people use it?

    • StevenGlansburg

The best reason I’ve been told by friends who use it for work related companies is that they use it for promotional offers for bars/clubs/shows as well as for promoting sales or specials at stores. I can kind of see that, but it really doesn’t make me want a Twitter account.

    • http://twitter.com/chrispgriffin Chris Griffin

I enjoy it because it’s a way for me to catch up with all my news headlines, click and read the articles that interest me, as well as keep up and talk to friends.

    • btdown

No you’re right. That’s pretty much it.

  • manny

Dear RIM/Blackberry, Thank you for the twitter update.

Now, fix your shitty Facebook app. Probably the most horrible mobile app i have ever come across in my 5 years of Smartphone usage.

    Your truly,

  • Phoneaphile

    Fuck Blackberry. Piece of shit.

  • David

I use Twitter to stay up to date on all my favorite websites (tech blogs, breaking news, etc.). Not everyone uses it just to “kill time”.

  • DaveNYC

    @Manny
Blackberry Facebook app is far better than the Android Facebook app. ie the ability to tag pictures and view and respond to comments in the messages folder.
I do have both a droid and a tour so I do a lot of comparing.

    • Moonbaseone

that may be true, but the FB app on BB simply sucks. Saying it sucks less on another platform doesn’t make it good, or less sucky….
