Rogers releases the Motorola QUENCH for $50

General

rogers-quench

While it’s more like the Toyota of Android smartphones as opposed to the Cadillac, Canadians who want to take Google’s mobile OS for a spin should look no further than the Motorola QUENCH. Available today from Rogers, the QUENCH is simply T-Mobile CLIQ XT with an even more questionable name. Of course this means that all of its specs — 3.1″ capacitive HVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, GPS, HSDPA and MOTOBLUR atop of Android 1.5 — are the same, and can be yours for as little as $49.99 on contract. Anyone biting?

It too bad Rogers didnr get the Backflip that Telus got. At least it has a unique formfactor and qwerty. Even Bell chose better with the older Dext. Rogers needs qwerty phones if they are going to continue picking up old, weak phones. At least the texters would buy it with a qwerty.

To BGR, I am not biting for this.
      Reasons:
      1. Android 1.5
      2. three year contract (data + voice)

Okay, Android users will have to help me out with this one. We all know that Android users know everything about business and industry, so with that in mind please explain to me how with a “superior” Mobile Environment can you not get people to buy the “superior” product? $50, people won’t pay more than $50 for this phone? It is running Android, it has access to over 50,000 Apps, you can use Flash lite and full flash soon and the main factor……….ROM Flashing. So, why not charge $100 or $200 for this “superior” product?

Because it is a piece of shit. Android is better than iPhone OS but not all Android hardware is better than all iPhone hardware.

I have a Cliq XT. It’s a great phone. I’ve been putting together a review on it. So far this is my list of Pros. No real particular order.

    PROS:
*MOTOBLUR UI is great, makes up for a lot of the shortcomings of vanilla Android
*Motoblur remote wipe and phone locate.
*Better Visual Voicemail, now works through bluetooth headset, and better ui layout than stock Tmo Visual Voicemail
    *Pinch Zoom in browser
    *Good 5.0 camera with flash
    *Touchpad insted of trackball
    *Swype Keyboard
    *FM Reciever
*Tune Wiki powered Media Player which scrolls lyrics while any mp3 is playing
    *5 desktops
    *Voice Command
    *Motoblur Widgets
    *Quick office Pdf support
    *Haptic feedback
    *Digital Compass
*Improved button combination commands; home, settings, power button. Single tap Home when at homescreen opens app list, double tap Home does a command you choose, I chose Voice Command. Hold Power button and it brings out a menu to quickly enable wifi, bluetooth, gps, and airplane mode.

Something seems to be missing from your review process. A good reviewer explains not only the pros but also the pros’ opposites.

I am “sure” Doakie think this phone’s strength is “it has no weakness”

  • Doakie

I understand a lot of the things I listed are commonplace now. But those are the Pros that I liked over my G1.

Jarrett is an iPhone fanboy, don’t be too bothered by him.

By requiring a long contract as a condition to get a phone, phone companies recognize that the customer will not buy their sucky service otherwise.

In the world outside North America, phone companies focus on the excellence of their service to attract customers. You buy hardware independent of carriers.

I am not biting for this.
    Reasons:
    1. Android 1.5
    2. three year contract (data + voice)
    3. Rogers – used to be the one with superior technology but no more – they even announced they have shelved development of their 4G technology, now we have to hopre Bell or Telus picks it up.

… really starting to dislike moto it seems that they cant release a moto blur handset with anything but 1.5… and this here is why there is fragmenation because of overlay ui’s that companys like moto wont update

  • drksilenc

google really needs to put there foot down and say you cannot release a handset with anything older than the latest revision. meaning since 2.1 is out now you cannot release a handset that has anything older than 2.0 so no more gen 1 handsets being released

      Amen!!!

I played around with this today and the build quality is pretty good. It has a touchpad not a directional pad, swype built in, and the music player is pretty cool too ie not stock android.

I don’t think BGR did this phone justice. Name is questionable though.
