AT&T gets serious about HSPA+, vows it will reach 250m people by end of 2010

We’ve known for quite some time that AT&T was planning to step up its 3G network in a big way over the coming months, but we didn’t exactly think it would be as big of an improvement as Engadget and Gizmodo are reporting. Apparently AT&T’s Operations CEO John Stankey was at a Reuters event in New York City and mentioned AT&T is going to more than double the speeds of its current 7.2Mbps 3G network by the time we’re all chucking out our 2010 calendars. AT&T’s made great strides in fixing its network in the past few months, and while we don’t expect it to be anything like T-Mobile’s 21Mbps network, but we’d be pretty happy if it meant that all of the 250 million people Stankey had a network with theoretical speeds hovering around 14.4Mbps.

I think AT&T is trying to put out some good PR to keep customers. Remember when 3GS launched? We were promised HSDPA 7.2 and Tethering. Where is the 7.2? I know in OKC we don’t have it cause I usually get 1.5-2mbps and in the past 1-2 months I have been getting 200-300kbps. And where is tethering? No where to be found. If AT&T is serious about it’s network, I think they need to stop being cheap and invest money and make it’s network what they say it is.

ATT’s LTE is still on plan. With this plan, if there is no LTE it will drop down to 3G which will be lightyears faster than if you dropped down to VZW’s 3G. VZW will come out with LTE first to claim it, but once ATT rolls it out it will be on a larger scale. This upgrade is not a stop gap, but and improvement that will effect people for years after LTE rolls out.

    • QuickWeevil

How can you say that? Have you seen VZW’s LTE rollout plan? It’s way ahead of what AT&T claims it can do. Verizon ALREADY covers more than what AT&T hopes to have covered by the end of the year by 3G. Therefore the chances of you dropping from 4G to 3G for AT&T will still be pretty slim.

@ bill grove, you pay for wireless internet, not 3G. I will be glad when we get it as well!

    @Scorpeo,

the more you talk on this site the more obvious it is that you know just enough to sound smart but not enough to be accurate

I’ll let you in on a little secret, I happen to associate with folks who are well versed in FCC spectrum as well as the different technologies. Explain how I’m not, “accurate enough”?

      • JoshD4

        Scorpio,
        It’s very simple.
It’s like a puzzle. You have all the right (give or take) pieces. They are not in the right places though.

The fact that you admit to your knowledge being second hand illustrates my point.

Do a little research and don’t rely on “folks who are well versed in FCC spectrum” (what does that even mean???) as a source.

feel free to point out eny grammar errors that i be havin as i dont preufread

        preciate ya :)

      • YOMAMMA

        HAHAHAHA thats hilarious

man i hate all those people that corrct your grammar its such a douchebag move

thats somethin bitches do that scorpeo dude must be a bitch

      • Scorpeo

Of course it’s “secondhand” idiot, a division within our company is in association with folks who are “well versed” (understanding of a trade) in technology. When someone goes to the doctor are they expected to know more than the doctor?… NO!!! Everything we learn throughout life, is second hand. Are you too much of an ignoramus to comprehend that?!

      • JoshD4

They also don’t come back from the doctor and act like they know everything.

The problem with second hand knowledge is that it is most likely inaccurate, and in order to be second hand their must be a first. *GASP* I know, I know it’s groundbreaking but firsthand knowledge does exist.

Obviously my point was that the knowledge you have gleaned from the well versed associations of yours is either innaccurate or you interpreted it incorrectly.

It’s like the phone game, the story begins as ” Billy is going to Florida” it ends up “Dave cheated on Susan on his trip to Nebraska”

again it is very simple get out of your cubicle and go get some firsthand knowledge

  • dad

Ill believe it when I see it ATT. Same for you Big Red with LTE. I predict abysmal speeds because everybody and there mom will be downloading on both carriers future networks bringing speeds to 3G levels.

  • Silver8ack

Cool! Does this mean my dropped calls even when I have 5 bars will happen twice as fast?

  • Puzzled by this

I live in a decent size college town of about 65,000 Verizon has 3g. here on AT&T and my iPhone I am stuck with their wackass dialup like mobile speeds. can’t wait for this contract to end. one broken promise after another. I’m sure the 250 mil include everyone who travels thru the major cities seeing as how thy don’t even have their 3g shit straight. good luck I guess

  • verrybarry

    @Scorpeo,

    damn your stupid

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • Scorpeo

      “damn YOUR stupid”

It’s “YOU’RE”, jackass, I guess that makes you even more stupid!.

    • Christopher Cox

You know, this isn’t really grammar correction because you’re flat out using the wrong word. There is a huge difference between the words your and you’re. And the difference is a lot more than punctuation.

    • Christopher Cox

“Your” is used to indicate belonging, and “you’re” is a contraction of you are. They are not even close. I never correct peoples grammar, because I sometimes use it incorrectly. But in that case Scorpio isn’t correcting your grammar. He is flat out saying get a damn dictionary.

  • Photoguy

Riiiiiight! I can’t even get a wireless phone signal where I live in my 77084 zip code now. AT&T say it’s not their fault that I live outside of the 3-mile tower limit and say the contract promises service but doesn’t guarantee it. AT&T sucks period and always will.

  • Vious

We will see….chances are when AT&T releases this it will be grossly terrible and it doesn’t run 1/10th as well as they say

    I will wait and see

What would be nice is if they would concentrate on actually providing 3G coverage to ALL OF THE PEOPLE ON THE NETWORK…forced data plan sucks but would be better if I had 3G instead of Edge since i’m paying full price
