Froyo_USB_Tether

This really is great news. TechCrunch is reporting that the next version of Android — version number 2.2, code name Froyo — will have USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot creation built in. Built. In. Currently, no information is available on if the new feature can and/or will be blocked by mobile carriers…but seriously, good luck to them if they try. Nicely played Google, nicely played indeed.

My incredible has these options. But I have to pay for them. I use pdanet and it works fine.

But PDAnet costs money & slows down after the trail period runs out

Of course the carriers can disable the features. Android is open source.

argh, this is why i wanted a VZW or Sprint N1 and not the evo or incredible, cause the damn carriers will take forever to push out Froyo, and will probably block these features anyways.

      hey Josh, (or anyone)
here’s a question I’ve been working around in my mind…..Since htc probably was given access to FroYo early to get it ready to work properly in the Nexus One, do you think they had someone working on it to get it ready for Sense? thereby having it ready for their various flagships(desire, evo, incredible) on the networks? Something to make you go hmmmm, right?

I read every stupid comment about delaying an update because of SenseUI and think exactly that. It’s like a mystical illness that has overcome HTC. They slipped up a bit on some of the earlier handsets, but they can’t be that ignorant. The tech crowd (the very same that help determine some of the new features of FroYo by hacking their phones and lighting up comments/message boards) have since made public their disdain for the illogical and unnecessary delays on the updates. Given that there are phones available without ‘the sickness’ such as the Moto Droid or N1, it would be in their best interest to prioritize these updates.

The thing about rooting/pdanet for droid users trying to get free tethering is that Verizon can tell if their data is being used for mobile or pc’s. Knowing Verizon they are going to try everything they can to disable this unless you pay up but knowing Google they want to offer it for free. Things will get interesting for the future of wireless data.

Hahahahaha. I think everyone read thru those lines.

I dont know what all the weeping is about with tethering. Verizon offers a free app for that on the incredible. They even included a company published notification in my phone. Maybe they are trying to be a little kinder, and gentler.

PDAnet actually has a free version (not trial) which doesnt have any bandwith limits on it, go check it out in the market. the only downside with pdanet is that you need the software preinstalled on the device that needs to connect to the internet (ie: laptop). so ipod touches, ipads and other wifi enabled devices cannot be tethered as there is no software that can enable this tether on these devices. still it is more useful than the overpriced/pointless verizon tethering which does the same thing with the same limitations. if you cant wait for froyo or verizon will not add the service for free, just root your device, you can always unroot later and the process doesnt take that long. I dont think that verizon will be allowed to change what google has implemented on their software updates, i heard somewhere that it was part of the deal that verizon cant parent what google can put into their devices. but charging for the service is a different story, i guess we just have to wait and see what is going to happen.

Isn’t the Palm plan $39.99 a month where most other data plans are $29.99 a month?

  • Another_VZW_CSR

No. It’s $29.99 just like all the others.
