Bing for Windows Mobile updated to support turn-by-turn navigation

Microsoft threw its Windows Mobile faithful a bit of bone today by updating its Bing application with free turn-by-turn navigation. When using Bing to find directions, a new “navigate” button will allow users to navigate to their destination using voice prompts. The navigation is (obviously) powered by Bing Maps, while the voice components are provided by Microsoft’s Tellme technology. The feature is said to be available for all Windows Mobile 6.x devices on Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T. Verizon Wireless was not listed amongst the compatible carriers, but seeing how the Omina II was mentioned as a compatible device we think it might be possible to get the nav feature —  but not the voice prompts — to work on Big Red. Point your Windows Phone to m.bing.com and let us know what you think.

Who really cares? My DROID incredible already has turn by turn navigation. No one cares about At&t or MS mobile. losers. Get a DROID.

Nice. Makes sense for Microsoft to make this move. It’ll put them on par with Google. Both have search engines and both now have their own Turn-by-turn nav.

WinMo 7 looks like its going to make an honest attempt to compete.

Although I am a Blackberry user, this is a good move by Microsoft which is pushing Free turn by turn directions as opposite to paid navigation. There is pros and cons to both. The best case is to have the maps in the local area cached on the memory card allowing offline use.

the map is a bit lacking though, i wish we could orientate the map instead of having it always face north. it’ll make it easier to do the turns.

Hopefully the pic above is not indicative of where you’ll end up when using Bing Maps :)

It seems to work fine, and on my new HD2 I am pretty satisfied. One oddity – I can’t seem to get it to shift into Landscape orientation. Whazzup with that Microslop?

installed it last night on my HD2. App’s been polished since the last version. However, couldnt get navigation to work in Canada. Sucks that this is US only.

If you use it on Verizon windows phones like the Omina II when you hit Navigat There it kicks you into Verizon’s Nevigation App. WTF MS and Verizon!!! F’ U

Not true. Just installed it on several Verizon Touch Pro 2 phones and it works just fine. No VZNav.

      Just got it from m.bing.com/download/

Installed on my HD2; runs great. Maps are not nearly as nice as Google’s mobile version but the navigation works well and best of all it is free.

Just tried to download to HTC Ozone and it says download failed. Since company requires microsoft or iphone, and my entire family is on VZW, I guess I will have to wait for the great features everyone else seems to get automatically on Android, iPhone, and Blackberry.

need to work on the map orientation….if it could let the north moves along with your turns it would be great but north stays in one spot
