Nokia sues Apple for patent infringements

Grab some popcorn and pull up a chair, because today Nokia announced it has challenged Apple to yet another round of legal fisticuffs having filed suit against the Cupertino company in the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin. At the heart of the lawsuit are five patents which Nokia claims Apple is infringing upon with iPhone and iPad 3G. Said Nokia’s press release: “The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices. These patented innovations are important to Nokia’s success as they allow improved product performance and design.” Apple and Nokia have been trading legal blows against one another for quite some time and it comes as no coincidence that this lawsuit coincides with the launch of the iPad 3G. Apple has yet to publicly comment on the lawsuit, but we’re sure its response will be as snarky as ever.

I’m glad Nokia is going after Apple

    • dfgdfgsd

Why? Were you one of those people who got all upset about the Apple vs HTC suite?

  • Joe

It seems to me all these smartphone manufacturers are patenting things that arnt really patentable, apple especially, and waste millions in useless litigation. This country needs some sort of patent reform

  • user

Get ready for the Apple vs Google vs Nokia insults…

  • Thomas

Who needs soap operas when you’ve got this? I’m still waiting for MSoft to swoop in behind Nokia, place their hands gently on their hips and whisper softly, “It’s ok…we’ve got you. Big bad Apple can’t hurt you anymore.”

    • Jarrett

      That was hilarious.

    • garth

      lmao….

Pay the Piper Apple. You know you owe Nokia some $$$. They have been in the GSM game for at least 20 years. Their massive patent library is undeniable.

    • Jarrett

Agreed, sad though that Apple has repeadedly attemtped to licnese these patents, before iPhone launched and since. Nokia wants Apple to cross license with them (Which is why Apple is countersuing Nokia for Patent infringment as well.) Apple’s response, “No thank you, can we just pay the same rate as everyone else?” Nokia’s response, “No, give us your stuff, or you are SOL.” Nokia’s strong arming will do one of two things:

      1. This case will be dismissed on the grounds that Nokia should have licensed to Apple with similar terms as other Vendors and then will license.
      2. It doesn’t make it to court because Nokia and Apple settle everything (the other lawsuits included) out of court.

No matter how you slice it Apple wins because at no point will Nokia get the chance to use the patents that they were trying to make Apple cross license with.

Nokia is still a very large corporation, from a business stand point they need to get this taken care of before it costs them more than they can afford. That is a true statement because over the last year or two Nokia is making less money while Apple is making more money.

Before any of you “business savvy” internet lawyers respond go do some research about this subject regarding these two companies.

Would you like to guide me to where you found all your info? Because you sound pretty well read on the topic, almost like you’ve read through a comment board on engadget or something.

      • Dara

He’s a graduate student of Apple’s TV ads and press releases.

      • Jarrett

Ladies and Gentleman I give you BGR’s biggest hard-on for me.

      • Dara

It’s not for you, but thanks for noticing.

      • Jarrett

        @ Jeff,

Pretty simple really, just pay attention to the news. The problem is most people just visit three sites.

        1. BGR
        2. Engadget
        3. Gizmodo

Once you actually add that content to content from financial sites and news outlets you actually get a picture that is somewhat clearer than just going with what you think you know.

      • Jeff

So, telling me where you got your info consisted of:
        1. This site
        2. The site where i suspected you get all of your info from
        3. and Giz (i assume you know about them bc of all of the iphone g4 stuff)

        Then you ramble and avoid……
        you should be a politician

      • Jarrett

        @ Dara,

We don’t use Nano technology in my line of work but it is an interest of mine. Glad I could help you locate yourself.

Nokia’s business is in a downward spiral. Sales are plummeting. They have no answer for the iPhone. They can’t compete with Apple.

So they’re going with plan B. If you can’t beat them, sue them.

    • garth

Oh im sorry, i thought apple did the same thing when the nexus one was released. Difference is nokia will warn apple about a lawsuit, apple didnt warn htc….Now look up in the air, scratch your head and say…oh yea, i forgot about that.

      • Jarrett

        @ garth,

Actually, multiple companies have stated that Apple has been in contact with them in regard to patent infringment. I am sure that HTC was contacted well in advance. No need to warn someone you are going to sue them if you have already suggested that they are possibly violating your IP.

      • garth

Perhaps, apple did contact nokia, but as i remember, when htc was sued by apple, htc release a statement saying they didnt know.

      • Jarrett

        @ garth,

As I said, Apple probably didn’t inform them of the suit, they had previously informed them about the patent issues though. As I said, no need to tell someone they are going to get sued when they already know you have reason to believe they are in a position to get sued.

      • Oh, Really…

Apple didn’t give a warning to HTC or others???

Hmmm, as I recall at the introduction of the very first iPhone, Steve Jobs said “and boy have we patented it”… what more warning ‘shot across the bow does HTC or others need? I’m mean, when a rattlesnake shakes its tail rattle… don’t be surprised when it strikes!

simplistic view of the phone market.

lawsuits such as this are par for the course and it’s not the first time they have fought each other (or the first time Nokia or Apple have gone after other manufacturers)

Not to mention dozens of other manufacturers.

  • Elie

so apple is having problems with every1, nokia, adobe, htc, and every company that has a name starting with i.

  • AGD

    Nokia is feeling the heat

  • maxpayne79

Doesn’t nokia realize that they’re turning into a bit of joke every time they file one of these suits? I could see someone who’s got wicked technology getting all defensive and protective about it, but when ur losing sales left right center and ur upcoming product looks significantly worse then blackberry os 6, u got problems. Then u decide to take shots at another fast approaching, sales steeling, visionary (albeit socialist even fascist) company, and that sh*t makes u look like a turd. It makes u look like Mosley fighting against Mayweather the other day. And thats not good. Instead of trying to extort money from someone else they should take symbian to another level and try to compete. I was using symbian OS 5 years ago and it did everything my BB does today. 5 years ago people. thats the equivalent of like 20 years in the car industry. Sh*t moves fast i know, but i gotta wake the ffff up to stay in the race. Otherwise u’ll turn into Mosley and look like an aging prize fighter who’s embarrassing themselves.
