Nintendo's yearly profits drop, Wii sales fall

Today, Nintendo posted its 2009-2010 fiscal earnings, and the Japanese gaming giant is beginning to stumble. For the first time in six years, Nintendo’s annual net profit fell, dropping 18% to Â¥228.64 billion ($2.45 billion) in this fiscal year, which ended in March 2010. Nintendo blamed the slide on the appreciation of the yen, a late 2009 price cut on the Nintendo Wii, and the lack of strong game titles to drive the sale of hardware. Speaking of hardware sales…they lagged a bit, with Nintendo selling 20.5 million Wii consoles, down from 26 million in the previous year. The DSi showed a similar decline as Nintendo sold 27.11 million units, down from 31.18 million in the previous year. Despite the decline, Nintendo remained optimistic for the current fiscal year with a forecast of: Â¥200 billion in profits, 18 million Wii units, and 30 million DSi units. The Japanese gaming company dismissed concerns over increased competition from the XBOX 360, the Playstation 3, and the Apple iPad citing its knowledge of the gaming business and its unique hardware, which appeals to a wide audience. Nintendo did not comment on the future of the Wii hardware, but did confirm the rumored 3DS, a new handheld gaming device that will allow 3D gameplay without the need for special glasses.Read (PDF File)

    Everyone doesn’t have a Wii already? :)

    • Sonya

I don’t, I want one though. I was waiting for the black Version to come to the U.S.

damn. the wii is actually an awesome piece of hardware. it’s a console that actually does the opposite of all other consoles out there:
    - it get people active
    - it brings people together.

come on nintendo, turn it up a notch

    • Eric

You left out one important aspect: it is fun and easy enough for almost anyone to use (children and seniors alike).

      • Eric

I guess “fun and easy” are two aspects! :)

      • cat in the hat

well all of the gaming consoles are pretty fun. but i agree, it is easy to use. easier than the others.

Personally I hate the Wii. I find it to be a novelty that goes against what video games are supposed to be: an artform. Aside from first party titles, the Wii doesn’t have much to offer in terms of games. I owned a Wii for a few months, so did a large amount of people I knew. Most, including myself, stopped playing after about 2 months. I absolutely loathe the notion that it gets people off the couch and moving! You know what else does that? Good parenting. Instead of plopping kids in front of a TV, how about you go play catch for an hour, maybe invite some of their friends over.

Most, if not all of the readers on this site grew up without a Wii and we’re doing just fine. If you’re really that concerned about getting fit, please explain how a $200 system and $50 games are a better solution than running for a half hour a day?

        @ soddy
you are missing the point. in todays world it’s not about playing catch vs. wii, or going for a jog vs. wii. unfortunate but true.

instead it is more like ps3 vs xbox vs wii. and in that case i am glad that the wii got such great adoption.

note: when (if) i ever get kids they will not have any console, or a smartphone for that matter, until they turn 16. i’ll give them a good computer meant for school work and some light gaming.

        1. Who shit in your breakfast bowl this morning? That’s a lot of passion for something you hate. You know what I do to things I hate? I ignore them, not rant about them

        2. damn, the dude just said ‘active’, he didn’t say get ripped like he was on PX90… sheesh, sit Ubu, sit! The more offended you get at the word ‘active’, the more you make people think you’re nothing but a lazy fat ‘tard sipping Slurpees all day then getting bitchy when someone says you should be more active. (Psst, here’s another secret: levels of pissiness is directly proportionate to a bad diet… hm, not that I’m one to talk… shit…)

        3. Art is defined how exactly? One man’s trash is another man’s art? An artist could create a piece of art that requires you to stand up to view it, and then claim that the act of standing up is part of the art. A man made a painting of the Virgin Mary out of human shit and some people consider it art. The whole POINT of “art” is that YOU can’t tell anyone what art is or isn’t… you can say what you like and don’t like and thats about it. You ranting about art is anti-art. No, wait… that would be hypocritical of me… the reality is that your art-rant IS art… all it takes is one person to say so.

        4. Games started as games and have/are evolving into art and storytelling. Every game involves some amount of skill and competition… take that out of video games, and all you have left is a CGI movie, not a game.

You know what the ‘art’ argument is really all about? Its about our generation trying to show and prove to old geezers that video games aren’t just mindless children’s activities. You make the art argument to non-gamers and non-tech nerds. To get up in arms over the Wii being “less artistic” than the next console or system means you absolutely have missed the entire point of the art argument. As a matter of fact, the target audience that Nintendo goes for with the Wii is actually meant to HELP your argument, numbnut. Once grandpa gets his bowling on with the Wii and realizes its not just stupid kiddie crap, him and the other naysayers and dismiss-ers may just alter their opinion on video games.

Damn, I give you Worst Rant of 2010 trophy. I’ll take runner-up.

    wii sux

  • Andy

Wow, very surprised. A family fun system.

  • zx

IMO, it has its good and bad points. However, you can only sell so many Wii’s before you start seeing slump in sales. It has been leading the console system sales now for a few years.

  • Tdot34

Not surprising, they could never sustain the enormous sales they had in the past 2-3 years. Everyone that wants a Wii has one. Plus the Wii is more of a group-fun novelty system, not a serious gaming system. I don’t know of anyone who plays their Wii on a regular basis like they would for Xbox, PS3 or their computer.

A reduction in profits on a money machine like Nintendo is not saying much besides “it was inevitable”.

It gives management a cue to release something a bit more substantial than console refreshes (or perhaps more console refreshes :)

All that said, I don’t think there’s anyone that doesn’t want to see Nintendo’s Next Big Thing arrive. I want them to take the technical lead this time.

  • Jouten

I don’t know about you all, but I would REALLY like to see a new console launch by at least 2011.

  • Anthony

everyone got a wii no one else to sell it to lol

  • FriarNurgle

A Nintendo DSiPhone would solve this slump.

    • Tenma

      hahahaha very funny

  • Doll

They need to make better games for the Wii. All those Hannah Montana, Dora, and Spongebob games aren’t gonna cut it.

    • Tenma

they need to make “new” games, not “better” ones, for i think they have great games, u just get bored of them after playing them 1000 times! :3

  • jayrodathome

    the fad is finally over!!!

  • Tenma

well, i think wii is a lot better than ps3 and xbox: it gets you active, it has better games, and it is, as others said, easier to use. many wii games are great, but after playing them for a long time, you get bored of them and want something new. but hey, no one can’t play the same games for his/her entire life! i love the wii, although i kind of got bored of it…so i just stopped playing for a while, and it’s like something new again.
@ Doll: u shut the f up! it would’ve been better to say “mario games”, because that’s wii’s main… >.>

  • towmater

    When will we see wii-hd?

  • David L

    Wait…people still play video games?
