BGR Breaks It Down: Getting your iPad 3G to work in Canada

With the iPad’s Canadian launch delayed until the end of May, we thought we’d give those with glowing hearts who made the trek into the home of the brave a hand in getting their new gadget up and running on one of Canada’s four HSPA+ carriers. A lot of people have written in and put in requests for help — and with the dollar basically on par we’re sure that we’re going to get even more before the official Canadian launch — so we thought we’d do our part and help out our early adopting friends in the Great White North. Getting the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G up and running in Canada is as easy 1, 2, 3. As always, the nitty gritty is after the jump.

Firs off, you’ll need to cut your SIM card to the dimensions of a Micro SIM. It sounds scary, but trust us when we say it’s super simple (provided your mom hasn’t forbidden you from playing with sharp objects). Once you’re done doing that, toss your modified Canadian SIM into the Micro SIM tray and boot up your iPad.

Now make your way on over to Settings > Cellular Data and turn Cellular Data to “On”. After about 10 seconds you should be connected to your poison wireless carrier of choice.

Now go to Settings > Cellular Data and click on APN Settings. Depending on which carrier you have a data plan with, you’ll need to enter in something different. Here are the APN settings you’ll need to enter for each carrier (remember to leave the Username and Password fields blank!):

Bell

APN: pda2.bell.ca

Fido

APN: fido-core.appl1.apn

Rogers

APN: rogers-core-appl1.apn

TELUS

APN: sp.telus.com

Guess what? You’re now good to roll in a pretty exclusive club. Just make sure not to look like too much of a tool using your iPad in coffee shops, book stores, at the pub, in line at the pharmacy, etc., etc., okay?

Well, you could always pretend to be a tourist. *joke*

  • Malacoda

The real question is: where do you get that Futurama wallpaper?

  • Motaz

If I cut my rogers sim, then I can’t use it in my phone anymore. So what options do I have to get another sim from rogers or another canadian provider? Do I have to sign another contract? Do they have data only plans with a sim?

    • d

      you get a simm adapter.

  • sand0s

@motaz… adapters are sold on the web. search eBay. basically they’re a full sim “blank” with a hole to put you modified micro-sim in.

You can also buy the Rogers MIFI mobile hotspot… It allows you to connect up to 5 devices on it. I have a 32 G wifi Ipad in Moncton and it works perfect using the mobile hotspot.

    • bj

Or just tether it to your Android phone… :-)

  • manny

@ Don > Rogers and Bell have deactivated and discontinued Novatel MIFI ’cause of exploding batteries problem till further fix or notice.

  • Aadil

Fido is owned by rogers so therefore it is not a fourth carrier but rather Canada only has 3 greedy carriers that rip people off and their service is no where near what you get in other countries.

    • Notafanboy

I moved from Montreal to New York, and I have to tell you, Rogers is LIGHTYEARS ahead of Verizon in network stability and quality… service here sucks. I drop calls constantly on a Blackberry, just walking up the street calls drop all the time.

Maybe I was just lucky on Rogers, but I never lost a call with them.

I average 3.2Mbps down and 275Kbps up on Rogers.

What data plan are you using from Fido on your iPad. I got an US 3G iPad and can’t get it working on Fido with my 3G USB stick plan. I have asked them to change to an iPhone data plan and nothing, neither the flex plan worked… I keep been redirected to a Rogers HSPA portal.

      Any clues?

wifi tether using your iphone! use the product called “MYWI” on a jb iphone!

    • AC

Mywi works perfectly well. And there’s no cutting of SIM cards. I think that the how-to should include this option.

Beyond creating a hotspot for your iPad, others can use it as well (friends, for example), and you’re not constantly moving your cut card from one device to the other.

what happens when you then hook up to your itunes account? I have heard that some wifi versions from the u.s. are some issues with itunes.

  • http://justincredible.me Justin Credible

Well, if we want to be technical, Fido and Rogers are one network, yes, but so is Bell and Telus. That is a grand total of two HSPA networks. Fidogers and Bellus.

    • AC

Justin, no so credible, Bell and Telus are two companies, not one, even though they co-built (paid for) their recent network upgrade and expansion.

      Cheers

…not including WIND (different frequencies) of course.

  • Notafanboy

Just.. watch the data plan… I hacked a first gen iphone back in the day and it cost me a ton because of how data intensive they are…. enjoy, but carefully…:)

  • igzabier

    how to unlock in Japan?

  • George

I have the WiFi iPad, so I jailbroke the older iPhone 3G that I had, and put MyWi on it. Its a bit of a hassle to switch the SIM over from my 3Gs, but its not that often that I don’t have WiFi and need to do this, so no big deal.

  • Vincent Nguyen

It did not for me. US iPad is locked for AT&T. It cannot be used in Canada with Rogers. If you know how. Please let me know. Thanks

  • Antonio Nobrega

I cut an older Fido SIM card down to size and installed it in my iPad and it says that there is no service. What did I do wrong??
