XPERIA X10 line to get Android 2.1 in Q4

Software

xperia-x10-family

Any burning questions you’ve ever had about the upgrade path for the XPERIA X10 family of products can now be put to rest, as Sony Ericsson has finally gone public with its intentions. As of Q4 2010, all three phones — the X10, X10 mini and X10 mini Pro — will be upgraded to Android 2.1 aka “Eclair”. Not only that, but after the update, the X10′s 8.1 megapixel camera will be able to record videos in HD. Throw in enhancements to the Timescape and Mediascape applications, as well as DLNA, support and you’d almost think Sony Ericsson genuinely believes it’s going to win over the hearts and minds of Android lovers by updating what will then be a year-old product that doesn’t even support multi-touch. But we digress…

LOL, if this goes like every other Android update for every other platform, then don’t hold your breath on actually getting the update. Also, who really expects SE to come through for the people who some how got persuaded into buying one of these?

      Trollin here too huh?

Every Android phone manufacturer seems to want to release their phones with a custom UI, and that means by the time the phone comes out, it’s a couple versions behind.

I’d rather have vanilla Android 2.2 with Flash support than a pretty UI.

Hopefully Froyo helps to deal with some of these fragmentation issues; it’s just being made worse by manufacturers releasing their own UIs on old builds of Android.

      Here here!!
      Well said.

Never mind this has been coming out since like 3 years ago..

    • Bob

      Yes well said.

I think SE got caught with their pants down on this line too though, the hardware limitation Never mind the 8 month OS delay.

Oh but they promised it before too (http://hyperom.com/2010/04/17/a-day-of-promises-for-se.html). Except by that time 2.2 will be out, and maybe 2.3 will be on the horizon :D

I’ll believe it when I see it :)

woo another 10 people will be updated to 2.1

  • TypicalAppleHatingDBAG

This again proves that Apple sucks. DROID FTW!!

  • Jarrett

    So 2.2 in Q2 of 2011?

  • arun kv

yeah..they had promised win mo 6.5 for xperia 1.and where did that go??..they might bring 2.1..but it gonna b looooot later..

    • Chris

When and where was WM6.5 ever promised for the X1? I’ll give you a hint, it was NEVER promised. Stop being foolish.

Maybe I’m missing something, but as far as I know the X-10 isn’t offered by any wireless network. Until this phone is offered by a network I think it doesn’t really matter what OS they use. I like Sony Ericsson products but for whatever reason they are very slow bringing their products to the general public. Until its offered by at&t I won’t be able to afford one.

    • Mik

      Rogers .ca

    • Chris

Canadian carrier Rogers sells the X10a, and Japan as well as just about every European country sells the X10. As for being able to afford it, use your brain. If you buy an unlocked X10 you’ll be able to pay $10 to 15 for unlimited data on ATT, if you buy an AT&T X10a (assuming one ever comes out) you’ll be paying $30 for unlimited data. That’s $480 over the course of a 2 yr contract. Go out and buy the unlocked version already!

I buy NOTHING Sony… Rootkit mp3′s did it for me.

Got my X10 a week after it’s release (white) I live in socal and use it with at&t, it even recognizes at&t microcell. Anyway my input here is to say… as an actual X10 user I love it and all the curious inquiries from the iphone/ other smart phone users seem never ending. Their general reply, “that’s nice/ that’s cool/ that’s bad ass”
The only negative feed back I have is that the battery in this thing needs help! Even using the app killer download it still needs help. I’m hoping the update will help.
I have previously used the nokia N900 and N97 and this phone blows them away in many ways but whats a phone with a lame battery??? SE is moving at a snails pace on updating this thing. Why? I guess they think it’s not going to be obsolete by Q4? It will…

    • rusty

jeez, you actually paid full retial for that POS? Good god man, what the hell were you thinking?

  • iamajimm

just how bad is the battery? charge every day? more than that? i like the look of this phone and would love to see vz get some love from SE.

    • Electrofreak

Dunno if I’d call it love…

  • fecat

With average use, once a day but you better have a car/ spare charger handy if your a heavy user. The phone is very nice. You hear a lot of people talking about the OS update… Well if that’s directly related to the battery, i understand. I’m not one to complain about a lot. No phone is perfect. This one could be over the top but SE doesn’t market much, just like Nokia and their high end stuff. I went to a sony style store with my X10 and they never even heard of it. I let them check it out for a bit. Yeah it’s a shame that iphone, moto droid and HTC get all the marketing glory and phones like the X10 are for some reason kept in obscurity. At least that’s how it is in the US.

My x10 tops my 9700 and 3gs, even with android 1.6……

  • http://androidsgirl.com mobil3gen

We shall see if it really happens… seems like everyone is eager to say updates will roll out at such and such a date, but then rarely ever fulfill their promises…

  • Rajiv

Just a question: is multi-touch that big of a deal? I have the HTC Hero with 2.1 and I can’t remember the last time I used multi-touch…

  • http://www.dotdosh.com TitanT30

“will then be a year-old product that doesn’t even support multi-touch.”

Wrong. It does have multi-touch capabilities.
