Google gets its Bing on with site redesign

General

google-redesign

If you logged into Google yesterday and thought for a brief moment you had been redirected to Bing, that’s because Google’s brand new search engine refresh has seriously cramped Microsoft’s style. In all seriousness and to be completely fair to Google, this design has been in beta for quite some time, but that doesn’t change the fact it’s almost a spitting image of Bing…minus the kooky backgrounds. On the left-hand side of the site you’ll now find the search tools which will help you narrow down your results from everything from a general query to specifics such as news articles, blog posts, images and more. It’s definitely one of those things you need to see to fully appreciate, so hit up the jump, check out the video and let us know your thoughts.

P.S. Google’s mobile search page has been reworked in a similar fashion.

    Bing is mostly flatulence.

I didn’t know Google has invested in wind power (seriously, they have).

I guess that’s the kind of random info I was looking for tonight.

    Mission accomplished.

And google just keeps on copying others.. When does it stop?

Not totally being serious, but so ready to be down-ranked.

How dare you attempt sarcasm in text on the interwebs. +1 to try and keep you alive.

Google had used a similar design as far back as 2006. See http://goo.gl/gKru

So that’s the site redesign? I’ve been seeing that for quite some time now. I hadn’t realized I was running nor how I was running a beta redesign?

Oh well. It’s not bad but I don’t think it really helps me much either.

  • jordan

please can someone show me how to get the old google back? I misss it

  • jesseps

Hasn’t that redesign been around for a while? I swear I saw that like last month.

  • Eric

Yesterday? Reporting on this site gets worse and worse by the day. This was seen weeks ago.

  • Mitch

I’ve actually never seen this, and it doesn’t default automatically when I go to Google.

    Seriously, am I missing something???

  • Mrwirez

Google looks the same as it always did. On windows 7 and Android.. WTF? Yes, I am logged in.

    • Mrwirez

      It’s Firefox.. works in IE8

Oddly enough though, everything Google does or has ever done has been a copy of something else

    - first they copied Yahoo and created a search engine
    - they copied Yahoo’s mapping system
    - they copied Microsoft with a version of Word, Excel etc.
    - they copied iphone with their Nexxus
    - they are about to copy others with a book site

Google has never had an original idea.

“Google has never had an original idea.”

      1) I’m sure yahoo wasn’t the first company with a search engine. What google did was make it more relevant and their search technology is a great original idea.

An original idea earning them the proverbial kajillions.

      2) I didn’t know they copied Yahoo’s mapping system. Was Yahoo first to map?

      3) copied Microsoft with Excel and Word? You mean Microsoft was first with a world processor and spreadsheet package?

      4) Copied iPhone with their Nexus is such a harsh way of putting things. Some might say “trying to build on the success of…” Plus everyone in the phone business can be considered copying Apple’s success here. They innovated.

      5) let them copy others with a book site; those with one weren’t the first to have one, either.

The idea is to get improvements and more competition (at least that’s the idea from my perspective).

        let’s try again:

        1) yahoo was google powered until google decided that they could do better by themselves and split off.

        2) some of the first online mapping services was by xerox, but more popular was mapquest. regardless, google greatly improved upon it.

        3) google docs is very different from most of the word processors since it is stored in the cloud and accessed from anywhere. compare apples with apples man.

        4) this is a piece of very overplayed bullshit. the iphone was not the first smartphone. there were many others before it. sure, apple managed to get it into the hands of many regular folk. but it’s not a first.

        5) agreed, they are jumping on the bandwagon with the bookstore. but they’ll make it better

      • Billium

True there were smart phones way way before iPhone but there really was not a popular touch screen smart phone before the iPhone. So yes Android is a copy of iPhone OS…

  • Petraeus Prime

Bottom line is, google makes $$$, they innovate. Inventors never get the glory.

  • fuku

google.ca has had this design for a while, guess we didn’t complain enuf, now they pushed it to the main site

  • fuku

“first they copied Yahoo and created a search engine”

umm, back in the day,,, Yahoo never had a search engine. They had an indexer, where you would manually add your links to, and people could search them. They did however offer a web search, which was powered by a 3rd party company. At one point that 3rd party was GOOGLE.

    • bluehorseshoe

Actually, if I’m correct, Yahoo eventually went over to Inktomi and subsequently purchased them, thus “their own” search technology.

  • mantrik00

Is it only for the US? I can’t see the change in India.

  • Manoj

This has been there on Google’s search website for a long time. It used to be a + sign along side the words “Show Options” just above the results. On clicking it, you would get similar options as seen here in the new interface, on the left side of the screen. Michael has probably missed it, or doesn’t use Google for search.

  • Enlightened

This was in beta testing for a long time, so some of you may have seen this before yesterday, but it was rolled out to all users during the day yesterday. Even now, sometimes I’ll get the old Google format, but the majority of the time it’s the new one.

Personally, I am not a fan of the new search page. I liked it the way it was but everything evolves. However, I like the new logo even less- it looks less “sophisticated” (for lack of a better word). It’s not drastic enough to push people away from Google but I think they tweaked something that didn’t need to be changed.

  • James

It works on some Browsers, works on Firefox. Doesn’t work on opera yet :(

  • detroitmak

Its been like this for a couple weeks now.

  • NuShrike

Had this for ~month now. Thought work or somebody had hijacked the Google page during that time.

  • Cold Dead Fingers

Did anyone notice that they used a Mac in the demo? ^-^V coolio

  • WazzuKirk

Google preys on people’s personal information and personal preferences. I hate the company with a passion, and especially because they have zero security.

  • Silver8ack

    @fastwalking
what the hell is your point? Would you prefer to be stuck with one version of everything or would you like to see ideas improve upon?

BGR isnt the first ‘news’ site, yet here you are reading the post and commenting.

  • Silver8ack

I mean seriously that’s like saying Tesla was a failure at creating Alternating Current because Edison already invented direct current.
