BIS 2-way Gmail sync goes live

General

Not a whole lot to say here other than it looks like RIM has finally flipped the switch on 2-way Gmail sync, a feature of BIS 3.0, for BIS customers in North America. Overnight our tips line was lit up by BlackBerry addicts who ecstatically reported that 2-way syncing of of read, unread and sent email messages for Gmail accounts was now active, although we should caution we also received reports that the option for syncing came and went ad nauseum. Let’s just hope that the aforementioned issues were nothing more than minor glitches and will be ironed over shortly. How are things looking for you?

Thanks, Shaun!

I am already seeing this for the last few days. I am located in Europe. Read/Unread status still sucks.

Have the problems I ran into before been addressed?

o Gmail client is a separate icon so you can’t consolidate SMS and MMS.
    o Message formatting is terrible.
o Google Voice “Play message” link isn’t a link.
o You couldn’t attach anything in the Gmail client.
    o Heavy battery drain.

    I’m on a Bold 9000 on AT&T using Google Hosted e-mail.

Your issues have to due with the Enhanced Gmail Plugin. This isn’t about that.

Ok. Thanks! I learned something. Where do I see/configure this BIS capability? I went to http://att.blackberry.com and I don’t see anything new. I even tried adding my Google Hosted e-mail account and didn’t see any new options. Perhaps it hasn’t gotten to my BIS server.

Could somebody put up some screen shots and instructions on how to determine if this is available on a BIS and how to install it?

Do I not need the Enhanced Gmail Plugin with this new capability?

Apparently not yet. Message marked as read on my Gmail interface still show up as UNREAD on my BB and the status doesn’t change.

Really need to be able to archive. Without that functionality, I am left to use teh Gmail App.

      the MUCH lacking gmail app*

Are you using the gmail or BB Messages icon from homepage? If you have Enhanced gmail plugin, you can archive/label/star msgs ONLY from gmail icon…cannot from integrated messages. Hope that helps.

why hasnt it worked for me i made some mail unread and it doesnt show up on my blackberry and i read something on my blackberry and it still shows unread on my gmail ????????

  • Sho

Here’s what I found on the new BIS gmail sync: the read/unread works only to a certain level – the red star (indicating new email) goes away, but the mini-icon on the homepage and message list still indicate unread…so halfway there.

    I’m running Storm2 on VZW.

The red star goes away if you enter the inbox and then exit (the mini icon is kept because the unread messages are still there). It has nothing to do with sync with the integrated email account.

I’ve been experiencing some novel behaviour regarding Gmail sync for a couple of weeks now, and it’s consistent with reports from other people here.

    (1)
Email messages I send from Gmail website show up on my BlackBerry (read, with a check mark).

    (2)
Unread status sync seems to be working randomly and slowly. In other words, I can’t quite grasp if it’s not working of if sync takes a long time.

P.S.: BIS, carrier is TMN (Portugal)

Working for me. T-Moible with GMail plugin. I archived on phone, refreshed gmail and the change was synced.
Wish it was as nice an experience as my NexusOne + Gmail, but it’s a good start.

Robert, that’s been working for a long time now. The novelty here is the TWO-WAY sync (e.g. read on the Gmail website, and the mail becomes marked as opened on the phone).

I am on vodafone australia and a message that I read on gmail just showed up as read on my blackberry, so I think 2 way sync is working here too. although it’s possible I read the email before it was on the imap server for BIS
