Adobe to rollout Flash 10.1 to Android in June

As expected, the verbal volleying between Adobe and Apple continues with Adobe again defending its Flash technology. Late Thursday afternoon, Abobe CTO Kevin Lynch posted a brief and pointed response to Steve Jobs’ recent essay which explained the reasons why Apple is turning its back on Flash. The most interesting part of Lynch’s post is the revelation that Adobe plans to roll out Flash 10.1 to Android starting in June. Lynch failed to provide details on which handsets will receive Flash, but we can definitely expect it to hit the DROID, DROID Incredible and Nexus One. Based upon Andy Rubin’s comments earlier this week regarding Froyo, we can also expect that this Flash update will be rolled out as part of the bigger Android 2.2 update. Anyone excited?

I loathe Apple and Steve Jobs, but he is exactly right on this one. Flash is an old, unoptimized resource hog. 10.1 on the Droids will not be quite the dream come true people think it is. And I just picked up an HTC Incredible yesterday. Apple products are too closed and restricted for my taste. Droid products go the opposite direction, but arguably too far. Apple’s advantage is they control the whole experience with the hardware and software. Android devices are sometimes fragmented and buggy due to different OS’s mixed together by different hardware manufacturers all with different specs. Still, I will take my chances with the later than be roped into the linear path of the iPhone. I just can’t get too excited over Flash, this is one Jobs is dead on about.

      What is wrong with everyone?
Box where flash object is, click that box to activate flash, no fuss no muss, how is that any different than how apple users watch non app videos?(assumin they are mp4)
How can that be a resource hog?

I can run CoD, Batman Arkham Asylum, Crysis, etc. on my PC in max settings without a hiccup. But if I come across a flash heavy website my browser can lock up, even sometimes crash. Flash sparingly uses the H.264 codec, which is documented to be faster, and full use of H.264 over Flash is even fully supported by Microsoft for IE9. HTML 5 is superior, but it will take a few years for full integration. In the meantime we’re all bearing with Flash. Don’t be sucked into a stance because of feelings about Apple.

My stance on apple is a derivative of their stance on flash.
I had my ipod touch, and hated the fact that I could not view the real web. I kept thinking any day now.
I liked apple, also liked flash, flash won because others offered the same, albeit less pretty, result as apple but encouraged flash.
I use it on my desktop, laptop, netbook and thanks to yesterdays skyfire release on my droid.
I watch flash videos a couple times a day, nothing ever blows up, and you know what I notice no difference.
I guess while I’m watching new south parks on my droid I won’t have the free resources to run doom, but that’s probably alright.

I don’t quite understand the “how”, but perhaps the various activity monitors that record resource usage lie?

@BOZZ, you hit the nail on the head. I can’t subject myself to the limiting experience of the iphone (or the AT&T network), but the Android platform will be continuously laden with buggy software if there isn’t some kind of standardization or limits placed on the low level of the OS. Yet again as Bozz said, I would rather deal with a few bugs than the linear path of Apple. If you are tech saavy enough, you won’t have a problem with Android.

I think Flash will be really nice, but load times will suck. Unless you’re in a Wimax city or a city with those crazy T-Mobile I keep hearing about you’ve probably got a bit of a wait before it doesn’t take 10 minutes to load a page with a lot of Flash. Once LTE is deployed and Sprint and T-Mobile get their speeds up as well (everywhere), Flash may not be truly ready.

Screw flash video. That’s not a big deal. We need more flash capability to run streaming music apps., games, etc. And yes, I think the experience is gonna suck untill the CPU’s and RAM increase. Seperate GPU’s will help as well.

I’ve stated this on previous posts, but for the sake of rehashing:

I had a HERO rom running on my G1 with Flash Lite.. even with the G1′s limited internal memory and limited processor speed, flash pages loaded without issue for the most part… over WiFi, they loaded very quickly, over 3G a bit slower, but nothing longer than a minute. With the N1 and newer devices’ increased RAM and processor speed, I’ve no idea why people think Flash is suddenly going to inhibit mobile devices so incredibly. And yes, there was the present option to disable Flash if you so chose. I would assume that option will remain.

Oh, also… Skyfire for Android is actually not bad, especially to be so new.

Loads up porn rather efficiently over WiFi. =]

    • Norm

And that’s why I love android.
      Who doesn’t like pr0n?

        Steve jobs

I had flash on HTC black diamond with sprint. Speeds were nominal. I used skyfire and it worked really well. Now I’m with vz motor Droid I mas the option of having flash..I think I’ll try skyfire 2 for Droid

Flash is over 14 years old already…Its just like auto tune, freakin dead…H.264 is being adopted by most manufacturers in the video camera world anyway…..and now microsoft and apple….No need to download a player cause h.264 is built right in?…Ever tried hacking hardware?

If you are putting yesterdays techonology into todays mobile phones or on any electronic device..then its not the latest and greatest….its time to move on?

Btw, how long do you plan on keeping your current mobile phone with 10.1 in it? 2 years?
Whos carrying the first mobile phone with flash in it?
    Exactly!!!….

Flash webcontent is useless on a Vista 64bit workstation as well. Every time any Flash website comes up Windows says the system must install Flash, then a few seconds later it says it can’t because your system is 64bit.

    • J

      HUH???

      this doesn’t make any sense…

    • MrP

You are probably using 64bit IE – even MS Silverlight wont work on it…
