And so the rollout of MOTOBLUR handsets begins in the True North Strong and Free as TELUS today announced the immediate availability of the Motorola BACKFLIP. Featuring a unique reverse-hinge QWERTY keypad design with a BACKTRACK navigation pad on the reverse, the BACKFLIP also boasts a 3.1″ HVGA capacitive display, 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, 512MB of internal memory, microSD support, and MOTOBLUR atop Android 1.5. Now, you’d think this phone would be priced along the lines of AT&T’s $99.99 on contract but you’d be wrong — it’s currently listed on TELUS’ website for $249.99 on a 3-year plan. If this isn’t a typo… Yeah.

UPDATE: Looks like TELUS made a typo on their website. $249.99 is the contract price without a data plan. With data it’s $99.99. Thank heavens.

It better be a typo, but it’s a cool phone, I like it….

Did they at least remove the Yahoo crap found on AT&T’s crippled version and restore Google services?

  • thedeeve

hey, i work for telus and yeah it isnt a typo. thats actually the aquisition pricing for a 3yr. if you get a data plan it is 99.99$ aswell.

  • Mrwirez

Man 3 years.. I think 1 year is more appropriate, I hate the 2 year US deals.

  • Jeff

Well its at Sams Club for $24.88with upgrade or new contract.

  • Ben

Its 99.99 with a data plan on a 3 year. 249.99 if you opt out of a data plan.

Greedy bustards, – this piece doesn’t have (a)GPS!
And Web browsing is in Additional Services, means one has to pay for it on top of data plan!?

    • thedeeve

no, web browsing is included in data plan

Yet another piece of crab horizontal slider from Motorola…. just get the Milestone if you want a touchscreen slider phone, it’s a much better phone.

    • uhmmm

It doesn’t slide and the build quality is pretty good

  • ~phel

Tdot, once again showing your powers of observation, its a flip, not a horizontal slider. Hence the name Backflip.

If the OS isn’t crippled, it’s only a matter of time before it’s ported to US-spec Backflips.

Am I the only one who’s annoyed by these “Operator X releases Phone Y” announcements? I already know about the phone. I don’t care if some Canadian company started selling it at their stores.

If you want a phone, buy the unlocked device and use the SIM card of your choice. You’ll also have the freedom to change companies at any time, so I won’t have to hear people complaining that Operator X sucks, but they are forced to use it for two more years.

    • Sined

Sorry if the US isn’t the center of the universe.

Some people do in fact care about these announcement such as the X10 going to Rogers and the Hero going to Telus as these are phone that could be imported for use on AT&T.

Any HSPA phone that launches on any of the big 3 Canadian carriers will work for AT&T and if that phone happens to be something not available to AT&T customers directly from AT&T, it’s a big deal.

      • Flavio Ribeiro

I’m not American, Sined. I’ve just never bought a phone tied to a company, and hopefully never will.

    • drksilenc

not every phone company uses sim… only gsm uses sim

  • tom

+1 Telus is really good in bring good phones to the market. Esp after HSPA is running, they keep churning out good phones that made me wanna give up my iPhone. Shame on u, Rogers and Bell.

Telus got the Motorola milestone, HTC Hero and now Moto backflip. + all the non-exclusive phone. Ie bold 9700, iPhone and etc.

    • Baester

too bad they’re the most expensive carrier in canada with the shittiest customer service…

  • The Drizzle

Not gonna lie it looks pretty good in black

  • iName

it looks so much better in black, less cheap looking. still slow as hell though

  • plec

we had a rep from moto at our office showing off the phone the past 2 days.. keyboard is just as uncomfortable to type on as the milestone and the screen is pretty ugly.. other then that i like it. does everything you need it to do pretty well for a $400 phone. best part is the mobile me features that dont require a $100/yr subscription

Has anyone actually used one of these? What you call a “unique reverse-hinge QWERTY keypad” I call the most ridiculous piece of crap phone on the market. If you want the keypad available while the phone’s closed, it’s useless cuz you can’t see the screen!
