Bluetooth SIG announced on Tuesday that the much anticipated v4.0 update to the Bluetooth protocol will be finalized and sent to manufacturers by the end of June 2010. The next iteration of the mobile connectivity protocol will feature ultra-low power consumption that could theoretically be powered for years by a coin-celled battery, faster transfer rates, and an increased range that can extend up to 200 feet and beyond. These features could expand the practical usage of this technology to a new range of devices including sports and fitness products, personal health products, security products, and home entertainment systems. Look for Bluetooth v4.0-enabled devices to hit the retail market in late 2010 or early 2011.

    And data transfer rate?

Good to hear that Bluetooth is still moving along.

I work for a major home security company and our wireless devices rely upon radio transmitters that across different bands dependent upon what kind of hardware they were developed for.

I’d like to see a Bluetooth 4.0 make its way into our devices; it would allow for a lot more product flexibility.

late 2010 is about when we will hear who the winner of the so-called iPAd giveaway is too. Hey BGR! In order to run a giveaway contest, you should, y’know, actually GIVE SOMETHING AWAY!!

Wait, but we barely have any 3.0 devices. Phones are still being made with spec 2.1 or even 2.0.

This is an excellent point. I can’t think of a single phone with Bluetooth 3.0, and I don’t see it being built into any computers either. What’s the point of this announcement?

Samsung Galaxy S will be Bluetooth 3.0

4.0 and it still won’t provide anywhere near the sound quality of a 20 dollar wired headset.

It can be argued Bluetooth hasn’t penetrated the audiophile market segment just yet (nor has it claimed to be anything it isn’t, really).

      What it is, is convenient.

Now when I leave my BT 4.0 headset on in the car by accident and go into a store, I’ll have even more hassles having to turn BT off to answer a call :) .

Or maybe, I leave the phone in the car and just take the headset wtih me :) .

Bluetooth for my cell phone is a joke!! I mean seriously it didn’t work right on my HTC Hermes and lets not even get into bt with voice command or this headset works and that one doesn’t.

Has any of that changed? Hell no!! Phones released today I still read people having problems with certain headsets or they can’t activate voice command with the headset etc.

    Its a freakin joke..
