Automatic app updates coming in Android 2.2

Software

android22-autoupdate

Updating Android applications has always been a pain in the butt thanks to Google’s insistance that each app be updated by itself. But according to a 4chan poster who apparently has a reputation for being in the know, Android 2.2 will make it possible to have apps automatically update themselves. His proof? The image you see before you.

    @Androboii,

you kidding me ? iPhone app updates are so much better than android. update all button then done. Oh I forgot you must be an android fanboy who hates thing that are easy and work like they are supposed to. ๎…

update all – always fails , you mean you have a restriction on downloading over 3 mb download on your iphone so you have to do all your updates through a mac or pc through itunes to get your updates? sounds so much easier . dumb@$$

      • Bob GRZR

        * thats through your 3g not to be confused with wifi

    • eric

you are so stupid BGR! I can tell by the way you write!!! Your neanderthal gants are thouhtless.

If u can’t inovate imitate. Google is taking that saying too siriues.

Problem..app updating in android is iffy. Sometimes you actually have to fully uninstall the current app and whatever settings it has before u do another install. Apparently there is a difference btw just downloading/install..unless autoupdate does that by default. Still problematic b/c some apps reset settings after an update, the devs for some of these apps need to be carefull.

how does android handle app updates as of right now? I’ll be joining the android family Thursday when the incredible releases

  • T Man

Wait, people have reputations on 4chan? And people actually know things? That’s crazy talk.

  • Off Topic!

    @rellyonsmash
You have a section in the Market that shows what you’ve downloaded and an indicator if there’s an update. Then you have the option to update it or ignore it. There is also a notification indicator at the top that tells you there’s updates available (the indicator gets annoying… sometimes there are apps you DON’T want to update and you keep getting the indicator).

No one likes WinMo, I don’t care and I do understand… but I tell you what: I don’t miss the constant updating of apps since changing to the HD2. With my G1, I was constantly checking and updating, checking and updating… I never realized how much of my time I was wasting on the damn thing until I changed to the HD2.

Not an anti-Android rant, again, its all about personal choices. Besides, Windows Phone 7 comes out, and its going to be the same thing all over again… download an app, check for updates, repeat 1,000x times a week…

One last note: Even if I was still using Android, I would turn off automatic updating. Sometimes developers have a new update… new update = new possible bugs and you end up updating to a worse version or non-workable one. If you don’t have a backup somewhere to reinstall the app, then you’re stuck with the lame one until the developer releases a new fix or decides to roll out an older version back on the market.

Why are you checking for updates that much?
I’m sure if you dont update urbanspoon or your hangover soundboard til you get off work it will be fine.
Your issue sounds like a tech addiction, that you are transferring onto the phone’s update system.

After all the waiting for 2.1, I scarcely care because I expect it will be months until its available. I have a google experience phone and I am sad to say that my expectations of easy os upgrades have been let down. I could understand if an HTC phone with sense would have trouble…

    • Bob GRZR

why would you talk about things you dont understand. plus if you know where to look you can get the update before its OTA.

  • Android Guru

Im excited becasue I know my Sexy Nexy wiil be the first to get it.

  • AB

Wait so the Mytouch is getting 2.2? what happened us Mytouch users getting 2.1? Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that a white Mytouch in the picture?

  • radio2

HTC. PLEASE bring this to my HTC Magic. The current way of updating apps is a gigantic hassle. I NEED this!

  • ~phel

Really!? citing 4chan? Nice. Maybe you can steer some more traffic to that pedo site. Michael Bettiol you have lost much credibility.

  • Oscar R

I don’t think that the mytouch (or G1) will be getting 2.2 (or 2.1, 2.0.1, or 2.0), so the only logical thing would be an update to the market. A few months ago the market had an update (to version 1.66.6 or something like that), and this will be the same.

    • Matt Thompson

A substantial update to the Market would probably require a framework update.

  • CSD

This is not a good idea. I have seen a bunch of apps that were free, then they released a paid version and took features away from the free app.

Right now I at least have the option of whether to download the update or not. If they take features away to try and push people into a paid version, I won’t download it. But if the update is automatic, you have lost that choice.

No thank you. I’ll stick with what I have.

  • Walter

or the devs that charge every time you update an app.. that’s annoying.. but i like android..

  • Bob GRZR

nice feature. only going to use on google apps, not other parties.
