Verizon Samsung Reality gets real April 22nd for $79.99

We called it ten days ago and now it’s official: Verizon will begin selling the Samsung Reality come April 22nd. A decently spec’d feature phone with a 3″ WQVGA display, four-row sliding QWERTY keypad and 3.2 megapixel camera, the Reality will set you back $79.99 after rebates on a 2-year deal. Of course with all things cellular there’s a catch, and in this case you’ll need to subscribe to either the Nationwide Talk or Nationwide Talk & Text plan as well as plunk down $9.99 per month for 25MB of data. But that’s okay. We mean, it’s not like Verizon has anything better coming up soon. Ohwait

I am always taken back by Samsung’s styling on their “D”-Pads…I don’t really care for it myself.

  • DanG

They need to start making these Multimedia phones with Wi-Fi.

    • DanG

What makes this stand out from the Samsung Rogue besides a 3.2 megapixel camera rather than a 3.0?

      • Normz

They will fade out the rogue for this. Its not really ment to be a “better” phone but rather be something “new” that people will buy because its “new”

      • AT&T_CSR

The Samsung Impression. Which has been on AT&T for nearly 1.5 years now.

  • Steel

I wonder how much contract renewals and phone upgrades have been impacted by these new, required $9.99 monthly plans. I mean, my wife is out of contract and eligible for an upgrade but she has no interest in paying extra for nothing.

    • Normz

There are still some good phones that dont require the data plan on verizon.

      Samsung Intensity
      LG Cosmos

      both great phones

  • Sonya

VZW stop requiring your stupid ass $9.99 data plan for dumbphones. Money hungry bastards. Now my friend who has no interest in getting on the internet or checking emails will be forced to stay on her enV Touch.

    • Fanboy

Please…let’s no one bitch about how AT&T does the same thing. Let’s play like it’s only Verizon…

    • Joe B.

AT&T actually requires twice what Verizon is $20 to Verizons $10.

      • Sonya

Relax VZW Fanboys, I didn’t say anything about AT&T, I’m talking about Verizon since on I’m Verizon. I could give 2 shits what AT&T is doing.

  • mikew

Samsung is not making the most exciting devices these days, especially after the Omnia II was such a disappointment. it seems they are constantly releasing new dumbphones/smartphones with bland specs and poor user interfaces. I’ll take HTC anyday.

    • Fanboy

I haven’t like their devices since the Saga or the Glyde personally. They need to step it up, even LG is beating them.

  • hemdroid

I’m another that doesn’t like this forced data plan. My sister is on my plan now with a grandfathered enV Touch so no data plan needed. She has no use for data on the phone, but getting rid of her dying enV means wasting $10 a month on something forced that won’t be used. We need some sort of class action suit against the unfairness of these charges.

    • http://www.verizonwireless.com VZW

A class action law suit for what? Verizon isn’t forcing you to buy this phone. they even give you a choice of phones that don’t need a data plan. The best of the LG Cosmos and Samsung Intensity. What are you people going to do with 4G… Really! What do you think 4G is?

      • American Patriot

        4th generation CDMA… woohoo….

      • Fanboy

        LTE ≠ CDMA

      • hemdroid

Verizon isn’t forcing anyone to buy the phone, but they are forcing you to buy an add-on service that the phone does not need to operate.

      • Fanboy

So do AT&T, Sprint, and TMO…and really every other carrier I can think of.

      • Fanboy

Also, even if EVERY phone they had required a data plan, no one is forcing you to use Verizon. As long as their is competition in the marketplace their can’t be a lawsuit for something like this.

    • Droid Lover

      your name fits you well

      • Corey

All Verizon phones require a data plan. 1.99 per mb for Simple Feature phones (Pay as you go), 9.99 for 25 mbs for 3g Multimedia Phones (a fair partition), and 29.99 for unlimited use on Smart Phones.

What is the point of getting a cool phone if you don’t want to actually use it?? If you just call and text get a simple feature phone. If you are getting an advanced capability phone, but not using those capabilities, you can’t complain, that is just silly. If you buy a car with a sunroof with no intentions of ever opening it, do you think that the sales man will discount the car? No. You pay for the features your belongings are capable of. I never hop on WIFI with my laptop, but you better bet the price of the embedded device was in the purchasing cost of that thing. Wanna look cool with your sweet DROID, but not pay the data partition? Flash the mother to Cricket (praying that the process doesn’t ruin the phone) and enjoy crappy service with no 3g capabilities.

If you get a cool phone just cause it looks cool, without ever planning on actually USING the thing, you are just being vain.

      • me

        so true

      • Cwc24

Verizon doesn’t sell phones that have high resolution cameras, high res screens and good build quality that don’t require the 9.99 data plans. Some people like to have those features and could care less about the internet on their phone. Everything that doesn’t require the internet is intentionally crap so as to force people into data plans that they don’t want or need. It’s a shady, dishonest business practice. I don’t understand why they can’t just charge a little more for the phone for those who don’t want internet.(Even if you pay full price you are still required to get a 9.99 or higher data plan, which completely trumps the “We need the data plans to recover the subsidy of the phone” b.s. argument. Verizon and the others need to treat customers like we are the reason they get paid. They are taking advantage of their customers because they know we don’t have that many choices.

      • Caitlyn

The 9.99 data plan is a very basic data plan meant to introduce those who have never had multimedia capabilities into the world of carrying the internet in their pocket. You call it a fair partition, but in truth it’s a scam. It’s an introductory drug offered to the timid in order to hook them into paying more.

I don’t care about looking “cool.” I want a good quality phone. My point is, I don’t want to have a sunroof I’ll never use… and Verizon is making me pay for one.

  • http://4myroof.com/ Michelle

Pretty good stuff. I’m loving it.

  • Angry Mom

Hey VZW (Verizon) My son is eligibable for an upgrade and he wants a touch screen phone, but I don’t want him to have internet. So he has to get a crappy phone because of you cheap sons of guns. Make the 9.99 plan optional, I am sure a lot of people will still get it, but what about all the parents who don’t want their kids to have internet? I am telling you this. The second our contract is over (August) We are switching to Sprint where he will get the LG Rumor Touch (I think?). You just lost a customer, and I am sure you will lose a lot more in the near future for your cheapness.

    • Fanboy

Let me guess…you also go crying to airlines that won’t give you a first class seat when you paid for coach too right? Should you get a first class phone when you’re not willing to pay for it…no.

Note: I’m not saying this phone is “first class”, but my point is still there…

      • KahluaKenyon

If you live in a region where the entire county recieves free wi-fi, perhaps you could see another point of view. I can go anywhere and get service on my laptop, but I cannot get the other features in a cell phone that I need without having to pay yet again for a data package. I see your side as well. It is like the Chrysler 300 – the car is so awesome, but Chrysler went and made it in a cheap “touring” version, and also in the expensive Hemi “C” version. The cars are exactly identical in looks. The streets of Detroit are flooded with the cheap ones or as they are called “Ghetto Bentleys” it is no longer desirable to own one, because now there are tons of the cheap ones on the street and the average person does not know that there is a difference under the hood! The prestige factor just died…

      • Cwc24

I need to learn which tab is the correct one

      • Cwc24

Fanboy. You seriously need to make some comparisons that actually work

    • Droid Lover

@angry mom – nice try agent rep – try selling cars

    • me

My son wants a lot of things… but guess what I pay the bills, I pick the phone. No internet means no pretty phone.. suck it up

  • penetrode

they could have just called it Omni 2 + (with a qwerty)

  • KahluaKenyon

Myself, I like all of the features of the advanced phones, but do not want the data plan. I am not looking for “cool.” I want a solid notepad application, I want a qwerty keyboard, a regular calculator at one touch not layered down in a zillion levels, and an instant calendar. I get enough e-mails at the office that I do not want them coming into my phone or the office to know that I can send any out from my phone. I think that people should be able to purchase any phone that they want, and not have to buy into a data plan. The phones that do not have the data plan are goofy looking and mostly low quality for features. I understand the frustration

  • MelJordan

I bought the Reality even though I didn’t want the internet package, but I sucked it up.
Personally, I love the Reality, it’s a pretty good phone over all.
I do agree though that the data package should be optional, it would be a lot easier come time to pay the bills.

  • sam

will somebody please tell my why my Samsung reality is showing i have a calendar event, when i have nothing going on all this week? it is really getting on my nerves!
    peaches1594@myspace.com.
please email me ONLY if you know how to fix this problem. thank you so much i really appreciate it guys!!!

    • jeff

Have same problem with calendar event. anyone have any ideas. major annoyance!

  • http://www.gocek.org/ Gary

I think that Verizon’s fee of $10 per month for 25 MB of data is evil ($5 would be more friendly), but (Caitlyn) I don’t think that multimedia phones are intended to suck anyone in. People who get MM phones are unsure that they want to pay for a smartphone, and they can try out some features at a lower price for a while. Most of us will be on smartphones, eventually. Anyone who gets an MM phone just for the pretty colors, and never uses data, is just being wasteful.

  • http://www.gocek.org/ Gary

By the way, after just two days, I really like my Reality.
