Exclusive

Want to know what’s in those boxes pictured above? We bet you do, and since we love you, we’re going to tell you. They’re AT&T 3G MicroCells. According to several of our AT&T connects, they’ve hot off the delivery truck as AT&T’s national 3G MicroCell rollout has finally begun. Now, we should caution you that we’ve not been able to completely verify that this is nothing more than another one of those boring gradual rollouts, but based upon how many cities we’ve heard reports from, we think it’s safe to say you’ll be able to get your own real soon. Hit the jump for some eye candy.

I work at AT&T and ur Internet speed has to be 1.5 and above. Plus no sat.

  • Cnote221

You know what? This must be the answer to that dropped call application they allowed iphone users to download and be field technicians so they didn’t have to pay real ones. LOL…

I work in the industry and seriously, Its sad that the cell companies do this because this is a great option to off-load traffic from there networks to your homes ISP and still charge the amount for data plans that they do. There’s typically a $5 a month charge for this service. (which i do agree with) But because your using there networks less at the same time you should also get a discount on your data rate for having one IMO.

But hey I’m just a bottom feeder employee, what would I know right?

    • DenCimm

“But because you’re using their networks less…” I agree with your reasoning. If I am doing them a favor by utilizing my wired network and thus relieving them of over the air traffic, then I should be rewarded monetarily.

  • Jody

Poor AT&T customers who buy this. AT&T charging your for a device that will expand their crappy network.. expand their network and let you pay for it. If you buy this, you’re a sucker.

  • http://youknowit.com att sucks

Figures, if they cant build a network, have the customers pay for it instead, a couple hundred feet of service at a time!!! With the lower Frequency Verizon (700 MHZ) in 4G, theres no need for this type of product.

  • Wasabi

Many of us live in homes that NO cell service reaches well, and I have tried them all. Verizon, as good as it is in our area, NO CONNECTION on my street. Same with ATT. TMobile and Sprint are closest. Usually about 1-2 bars or none. Therefore, this is not making up for their crappy networks. While I think coverage is important, it’s simply impossible to build the number of cell towers that will cover everyone. Permitting and even locations to build them make it difficult to put them everywhere they are needed, in addition to the sheer expense of building a tower to just serve a few potential customers. It would be best to offer these for free upon sign-up or if it’s verified you have no signal, but stop complaining about the fact that it exists. Would everyone stop being so angry if it were offered for free? I don’t think so. They’d still be yelling about the crappy network, but these are two different arguments. I’m with TMO because they had UMA and HotSpot@Home. I like TMO’s prices and customer service, but I want an iPhone or a more advanced, non-problematic Android device. Given none of those devices will be UMA, I have no choice but to ultimately go to a carrier that offers this type of device.

If it’s so easy for AT&T to sell this, it should be easy for them to install this at all of their reported dead/drop spots including the subways and tunnels also. But investing in their network instead of lining their pockets is anathema.

      Tossers!

      • justme

it runs off of your home internet connection, therefor unless your subway car is its on wifi hotspot it wont work. and for all the knocks on the AT&T network, those of us who arent apple sheep dont experience any issues

    • DenCimm

“or if it’s verified” – HUH?

      • DenCimm

what am I talking about? HUH? forget this comment

  • CuritsTheGeek

Still no available in New York City or Long Island, but it is in Rochester now. Anyone else see availability in their area recently?

    • Tim Q

i see it’s available in the Bronx 10465 and Middletown …

  • Fanboy

Don’t see why this is so big of a deal other than AT&T having a bad network. VZW has had the network extender for almost a year now that does the same thing for about the same price. Wouldn’t have said anything if BGR didn’t treat the rollout of these devices like a major phone release. This isn’t exactly iPhone 4G, who cares if they’re “hot off the delivery truck”.

    • Wasabi

I think the main difference is that this is a 3G device vs the VZW device (which costs more) as a 2G. I assume it means we can talk and surf at the same time BUT if you’re on wifi anyway, you’d probably be able to do the same thing. I’ve never tested any of these devices and that capability within my home.

  • Dustin

I’m having trouble understanding why this isn’t good for customers. To all you VZ lovers out there, VZ has as many he’s and dead spots in their network as AT

  • Fanboy

I’m pretty sure the VZW device is 3G as well as it’s sold as an enhancement for people who have issues getting good EVDO signal in their homes. Isn’t EVDO their 3G?

    • http://www.bgr.com Kelly Hodgkins

The vzw version is 1xRTT and does not support EVDO.I use one as the location where I am living is on the fringe of coverage.

  • Tinalooks808

If you live in a area with either bad reception or a high volume of dropped calls due to congestion then they should seriously give these away for free when you sign up on a contract!

  • Alex Alexzander

I bought one of these yesterday for my San Francisco location. Now I have 5 full bars and it works everywhere. Even deep in my basement where any call would die instantly as many of the walls are concrete. With my iPhone set to wifi and the voice call utilizing the m-cell 3G I get the best of both worlds. A great connection and my extremely fast Internet for data.

I think you’re going to see these sell like hotcakes. I may even buy one for my offices.

    • NuShrike

Ya, femtocells are amazing where in most countries it’s the carrier that installs them and gives you signal where ever you need it for the normal cost of your unlocked plan.

Isn’t our capitalist country just great? :-P

    • Girl Reporter

Hi Alex. I’m a public radio reporter, doing a story for the national program “Marketplace” on the backstory that’s led AT&T and other wireless cos to offer a device like this. Would you have time for a chat on what led you to your purchase?

  • William

I called customer care and they informed me that I would need to wait and that after they spoke to the local corporate store the earliest would be May 1st…..
so I guess it’s not a national rollout since Orange County, CA doesn’t have it yet….

I called Customer Service and then two corporate stores in Central Florida; No Mircrocell for Florida yet and no date given.

  • zeppfan72

We got em here in AZ now. Though I will have to drive 100 miles to get one.

  • Paul

I just got mine here in Connecticut. Connected it and now waiting for activation to complete.

  • Drew

Any news on when it will be available in Massachusetts

    • Dan

      Bought mine today in MA…

  • WhoMe?

Now that Net Neutrality is in complete jeopardy, VZ service will be free to cripple this AT&T connection; ATT can cripple any VZ devices; and, Comcast can pick and choose who they want to ally with.

Who would of guessed that we would almost go full circle so quickly since the divestiture of the Bell Monopoly. For those of you believing the “Free Market” needs no regulation, I suggest a little research to understand WHY these things should happen. Here’s a start:

Just got one in central Texas. Took 70 minutes out of the box to up and running. Took 4ever to rollout, and should be free, but even so, it IS nice to have a 5-bar signal indoors, where before I had no service at all.

  • sean

@Jody, Att isn’t the only one with this.. tmob had this for years and vz had theirs
for a year.. so what’s ur point?

    WTF AT

  • wow

what a joke. hey im at&t my network sucks so im gonna charge my existing customers 20 dollars a month to put a damn box in ya house so you can pay us to use your cell phone. oh but we will put frosting on the cake u get unlimited minutes. oh and 100 bucks if we have to have a tech come out and warranty exchanges will go through the roof cause its just another piece of shi$ and we know it. we also take 1 year to release it because we are stupid.

  • 3G Mcell admirer

Guys, $20/month for unlimited calls & Data is optional. There is only time $150 charge to buy the unit and you could continue to use your same voice & data plan. I think if you bundle up AT&T Uverse & Microcell you get $50 rebate on purchase of Mcell. I have one at home. It works great. 5 bars everywhere in my home. 4 users can make voice calls & data simultaneously. I have Comcast Cable Internet at home. Verizon and Sprint are selling similar device for last 2 years. Majority of the people here have some kind of prejudices against ATT. No wireless operator is perfect in providing coverage due to the nature of technology where RF signal fades inside the concrete / metal / thick walls. So in my view this is one great solution.

  • KeithB717

I think this is a great unit because the simple fact is your building can really affect your signal. I have full coverage in my home in the top floors, but our basement apartment has spotty coverage in some rooms and none in others. Now with this, we have full coverage in spots where there was no signal before and I have found webpages load faster connected to the M-Cell than they did on Wi-Fi. Yes, I didn’t want to have to pay for it, but it is way better than not having cellular service in my home.
