Samsung, the world’s largest manufacturer of flash memory chips, announced today it is launching an independent investigation into high rates of cancer amongst its employees. From 1998 to 2010, some 22 employees who assembled flash memory chips were diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma, with 10 of the workers eventually succumbing to the disease. An investigation led by the South Korean government ultimately concluded in 2008 that the various chemicals used in the manufacturing of the chips were not to blame, but continued protests over the objectivity of the findings have forced Samsung’s hands. For its part, Samsung admits it should have done a better job calming fears that its workers are exposed to carcinogens, but vowed to “do our best to improve the working environment and better communicate from now on.” All workers who assembled the chips were required to wear an assortment of safety paraphernalia.

Well I just read yesterday how the treatment of workers in China is so bad. They have a 12-16 hours a day, for less than a dollar per hour. Forced to buy food from the company. No bathroom breaks..

Here is a sickening article about American corporations fighting workers right reform in China:

I hope no one makes jokes about this one. This is a very serious thing and it sounds like Samsung is trying to take it seriously.

Will be hard to decifer what is truth in this investigation. Samsung is so large in Korea that the government bows to them when they need anything.
A 2008 investigation found chemicals were not to blame, well how did 22 people come down with cancer. Sure it could be a coincidence they hired 22 cancer prone workers, but highly un-likely. Any findings that are done by any Korean company should be taken with a grain of salt. No company would dare mess with Samsung.

All in all, lets just hope our flash card prices don’t go up. I am eagerly awaiting a cheaper Solid State Drive.

News Flash! Those countries don’t care what they do to their workers or the environment.

I had a friend that worked over in Thailand 10 years ago and he visited a plating plant in the middle of a rice field. He watched as he saw a stream of chemicals being channeled down a funnel on the floor go down a drain and asked what it was. It was hexavalent chromium! They said that is was going into a sealed container for later disposal, yeah right. He never ate rice again.

If anyone here doesn’t know what hexavalent chromium is then watch the movie Erin Brockovich. PG&E were sued hundreds of Millions for dumping the stuff in California in the 80′s. It causes all kinds of cancer, scary stuff.

Makes you wonder, all the handling one does of the various SD and MicroSD cards, on a daily bases, month after month year after year!

    Thank You

Clearly no one here has spent any time in China. I have been blessed to be there over 70 times, and do not claim any expertise. China is a developing country with an incredible domestic economy that is on fire due to workers that you are so patronizing about, going from ZERO income as feudal farmers to $0.67/hour. Now with incredible infrastructure investment (guess what the Chinese government didn’t have to bail out our still criminal and corrupt banking system), these same workers are not earning as much, if not more, by building roads and railroads close to home. The workers all have restrooms and living quarters. Are they western standards? No, but it is what they are used to. Remember, China is a communist country, but there is no organized labor. This is cultural, we we cannot expect to push western culture on an ancient feudal civilization. Just like we shouldn’t be pushing our culture in the Middle East.

This has a major impact on us in the USA and Europe, as the cost of our goods that we consume are going up significantly due to higher BOMs as well has slower manufacturing times (workforce shortages in major regions such as as Guangdong), as well has significantly higher shipping costs.

Before you spew your Liberal guts out, get your fucking facts straight!!!
