Cablevision, Time Warner, Comcast announce agreement for free Wi-Fi roaming

WiFi Roaming iPad

Big news coming out of the NY/NJ/CT tri-state cable companies, and it’s downright exciting. Cablevision, Time Warner, and Comcast have all teamed up to announce a roaming agreement that will allow their subscribers to freely roam on any of the companies Wi-Fi networks. Think about that for a second… as long as you are a Cablevision, Time Warner, or Comcast customer, you can get free Wi-Fi access at practically limitless locations (thousands) all across the NY metro area from all three providers, and connect to any of their networks from your computer, iPad, iPhone, BlackBerry — whatever. According to the press release, authentication for this to happen is already in place starting today, so if you were just sticking to your own cable provider’s magic hotspot, fell free to mosey on over to one of the partner networks. Just try not to make Verizon too jealous, ok?

it does but its slower according to PC Magazine’s tests, and its DEF slower than WIFI. oh yea and Verizon cripples there phones…….riiiiight….thats why I don’t have them.

      • Jimmy

Verizon is a home phone provider in these states. They have HOME internet. WTF are you talking about their phones for?

      • James

They haven’t crippled a phone in years, idiot.

There are times when I would tether my Verizon BlackBerry because my RoadRunner upload speed (Cable NOT wifi) was stuck in 1996.

I mean, 10mbps down is decent, but 768kbps is ridiculous for up.

Who is going to pay for this?

    • jeff

the article made it pretty clear: if you subscribe to either time warner, comcast or cablevision, you are paying for it.

    Comcast rocks in central IL.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • YoYoS

I bet 90% of Verizon users are Mets fans #fuckinlosers

    • Versed

Is that on the freenode or efnet?

Verizon FIOS offers this. The only drawback to the FIOS one is that you have to own a 20mpbs download internet package.

I have a feeling that anybody with taste/sense already has FIOS if they can get it, thereby eliminating any cable company from actually mattering with their pathetic copper networks.

I noticed that my local Optimumwifi hotspots were joined by TWC and Comcast ones a couple of weeks ago, and figured there would be some announcement regarding network sharing. This is great! I use the Optimum ones all the time from both my phone and laptop; it will be sweet to ust TWC’s and CC’s as well.

  • James

I might actually care about this announcement if it involved my state.

  • greg216

i told comcast to do this in 2004.

    better late than never.

  • graf

this has been available for about a month now. i live on long island and these were popping up in early April. guess they were testing and now the press release is out. works well with my iphone btw.

Apparently I’m the one that has to point this out. The article references Verizon getting jealous over the cable companies offering free wifi spots. FYI Verizon has been doing the same thing for their Fios, DSL, and Mobile Broadband customers for the better part of a year. They have been offering free wifi spots (thousands) of spots throughout the country for a while now. Way to do your homework BoyGenious.
