Jailbroken iPhone 3G shown running OS 4.0 complete with multitasking

Although Apple has made it perfectly clear it will not enable multitasking on the iPhone 3G due to “hardware limitations” (specifically its 128MB of RAM and 400MHz processor), iPhone hacker cdevwill quickly discovered that an unbelievably simple modification of the N82AP.plist will enable multitasking on the iPhone 3G. And wouldn’t you know it, today a video was posted to YouTube which shows an jailbroken iPhone 3G with the modified .plist running multitasking as if it were no big deal. While it’s tempting to say Apple is simply restricting multitasking to the iPhone 3GS and up for the sake of hardware sales, it must be remembered that the APIs which actually allow for processes to run in the background are not implemented in any of the applications running in the video. In all likelihood, simply streaming music from Pandora while switching between playing Doodle Jump and firing off some tweets would likely bring the iPhone 3G to its knees. We mean, just look how painfully long it takes to open up the Clock application. But that’s just our take. Check out the video after the jump and let us know yours.

to those saying 4.0 isn’t real multitasking:

not only are you wrong, you’re painfully so. 4.0′s multitasking is very similar to android’s implementation of it.

    @ scott
That’s absolutely ridiculous, people who know what an OS is get a droid, I have never come across an iphone user that had any clue what an OS was let alone which one was on their phone. And that is why the dumbest, most simplistic p.o.s. works for them, cause they just don’t care!
File manager? What would I do with that?

I think I can sum up all of our collective Apple hatred with my neat little poem…

Apple sucks. The iphone sucks. I hate Steve Jobs. Macbooks are just glorified netbooks. Here are some clever puns on Apple products: iTampon, iMaxipad, iPoop, etc. The app store sucks and itunes sucks. iPods were not the first mp3 players and they suck. Zune rules, ipod sucks. Everyone who buys any Apple product is rich and just throws away money for things that don’t work. The iphone doesn’t multitask or have widgets and therefore sucks. I HATE APPLE!

Now if they could make it multi-task like Palms webOS!

    • NoComment

They DON’T WANT THAT, the OS can do that since day one, but the API for 3rd party apps ist written in such ways that 3rd party apps are stopped. There are dozens of tasks and apps that run in the background, as iPhone OS is a fully preemptive multitasking OS. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to do a call plus surfing the web, or listening to music while reading your emails.

Once an “official” jailbreak comes out for OS 4 I predict we will hear a lot more about swap….I used it in combination with backgrounder on my iphone 3g without many problems….

  • Tater

I knocked the iPhone before I owned one. The iPhone is gettin bigger every year face it people apple is takin the cell phone market and there nothing you can do about it.

    • *DROIIIDT*

Uh, no. You havent been paying attn, have you?! lol

BTW, Droid Incredible is trending at #2 right now. ;)

      • StevenGlansburg

I admit, its a decent phone, but I still hate twitter.

      • *DROIIIDT*

I was actually reffering to Yahoo trending (which is more impressive) and not Twitter.

    @DavidG,

I totally agree. what your saying makes perfect sense. everyone keeps complaining about it constantly but they never stop to thin about the issue logically and with reasoning.

So I’m not a nerd, but if my old bb storm (1st gen) could multi task, myiphone 3g can!!! Guess I’ll be jailbreaking — which I had been against out of respect for apple, cuz I love them so!!

    • AT&T_CSR

“Guess I’ll be jailbreaking — which I had been against out of respect for apple.”

I LOLed. That’s like me saying I don’t wanna put wasabi on my Big Mac out of respect for McDonald’s.

Other than for your wallet, do you really think Apple gives a rat’s ass if you respect Apple’s ToS? Or any other multimillion dollar corporation?

I’ll brb. I need to pee from all the LOLing.

3G should get a slimmed down version but not crippled. Just limit the amount of multitasking if necessary. The funny thing is no apps are coded yet for OS 4.0 so who knows how slow the 3G might be (or not). I think apple totally wants to get 3G owners off their 3G’s and onto the next big thing which will conveniently come out around the same time as 4.0.

    • Dee

yea i like your thinking.. they should give us multitasking but have a memory limit so the phone doesn’t have a memory usage overload and freeze.. that is likely the reason Apple won’t allow multitasking on the 3G. It has 128MB of total RAM and only 50 MB available at idle. Get this app System Activity Monitor.. it shows you how much RAM you have available and shows stats for running background processes.

  • ChrisNYC

I would have more impressed if the thing was blasting some Pandora tunes, while he’s running a more intense app.

I hope he updates, and puts up a better test of the HW.

  • ChrisNYC

@Wil “I think apple totally wants to get 3G owners off their 3G’s and onto the next big thing which will conveniently come out around the same time as 4.0.”

Smells that way. If, like you said, they allowed at least some multitasking on the 3G, it’ll canabalize sales going forward.

And we all know it’s about “replacement cycles”

  • Mike

Of course he is in it for the money, isnt that why we all go to work everyday. And to all of the people that say they hate apple, keep in mind that without apples influances your precious Droid would not exist. They innovate and other companies learn from their ideas and mistakes. Get over it, its business.

  • BuggyDroidEris

Apple all day!!!! Most people just want a phone to work. I love my Iphone so why should I hack it??? the 3g has ran it’s course.I can’t wait to purchase the 4g version. Multitasking looks great and I ads is gonna make me lots of money… Can your droid do that??????

  • Drew

This just goes to show you how much of a lying f*#king crook Jobs is. He just wants you to buy another device. So, for all of you fake @ss wannabe businessman don’t give me the “This is America” speech and how he’s being capitalistic. He’s once again giving the consumer the middle finger and lying to your face. How do you people (Apple Minions) put up with that?? And stop with the, “If it wasn’t for Apple…… Android wouldn’t be this and HTC that….”. That’s your weak @ss argument for what’s going on. And the App induced coma continues…. Oh, and one more thing, prepare to be “UnWowed” by the hardware.

  • overit

I’m done the end of July (contract wise) and I’m so over it that I’m headed back to Verizon and a HTC Droid Incredible or Nexus One (if it ever appears.) I’ve had my 3G jailbroken since the 1st week I had it and never had a problem with Multitasking. I’ve been using Backgrounder.
Still love my MacBooks but I’m over my Iphone with the dropped calls and all.

  • Jonathan Penton

This guy has obviously used FWChanger from cydia and added a tweak so that the multitasking looks just like the one for iPhone OS 4.0

    • Dee

exactly.. but even if he was using multitasking? he only showed settings and calculator running together. that may be possible. Now when he runs a few third party apps together, the phone would likely crash. I have an iPhone 3G and I bought this app System Activity Monitor. It shows you tech details about background processes and shows your phone’s total RAM. The iPhone 3G only has about 50 megs of available RAM on idle. I run a few apps, then go back to the app and it shows me there is only like 10 megs RAM left. The app also lets me clear RAM and it only gives me around 50 mbs of available RAM when I free it. and this is without “multitasking” like OS 4. So this video may actually be real, but it isn’t putting enough stress on the iphone’s resources with those two lightweight apps running together. So Apple is doing all of us 3G owners a favor by not allowing multitasking because the iPhone would be so laggy and would likely freeze. They are not lying to make money, relax. And trust me i hate Apple and macbooks and imacs and everything. I just love the iPhone and bought it.

  • ChrisNYC

Thank you. That was my sense. Apple labs knows darn well that proc can’t handle real multitasking.

  • Mike

I can`t tell you if this is a fake but it looks very real to me. You seriously can edit the .plist and enable multitasking and even the user wallpaper. The blogger 3asy postet on his website how it`s done, even without UDID registration thanks to the jailbreak…Tried it and it really works!! :-)
