Palm courting Huawei as a potential buyer?

Rumor

Palm may be looking to Asia Pacific for potential buyers according to the latest information coming from the ever-churning rumor mill. Reuters suggests Palm has approached Huawei two months ago to gauge the Chinese manufacturer’s interest in purchasing the once mighty company. With its strength in manufacturing and strong reputation overseas, Huawei’s acquisition of Palm would accelerate the manufacturer’s entrance into the crowded American smartphone market. But, despite being what some might call a proverbial marriage made in heaven, the talks were said to be short lived and have not progressed since. Huawei is not alone as a potential Palm suitor; other companies on the short list include Lenovo, Huawei rival ZTE, HTC, and Dell, although the later is said to have declined to enter a bid. Anyone want to wager who will be the lucky winner in this motley pool of potential Palm purchasers if it pans out?

I hope the short list really is between HTC, Cisco and Lenovo… great editorial here… http://www.webosroundup.com/2010/04/palm-should-say-no-to-htc-and-yes-to-cisco/

Well, if HTC gets Palm at least we can look forward to decently built handsets unlike the Pre/Pre Plus disasters.

      • BBSwany

+1 for that. The problem has never been the software. WebOS is an awesome mobile OS, the hardware on the other hand has been a disaster. Put Web OS on an HD2 type device?!? Boom!

What happened with Palm’s handset quality? I mean, I have a Centro (still…) and its been a very durable handset, and I’ve seen some of the old PDAs last quite a long time, it doesn’t mesh at all with what one hears about the Pre.

The market is already very crowded with some very big players. Maybe Palm will get bought out and will then just vanish.

But you are using an iPhone: “Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone)”. This is exactly where the problem is: No one hates Palm, they just don’t buy Palm products because of their hardware design and admittedly poor PR.

  • Bradley

we all want HTC to buy palm, but we don’t know if HTC has enough money to do so. we don’t know how deep HTC’s wallets are and likewise we don’t know how Palm is asking for.

time alone will tell, and until we get an official announcement, we will never know.

How about a simple merger. Htc and palm as partners. Or licensing webOS to HTC at the least.

    nooooooo’!!!!!!!!!!!

Nooooo, it needs to be either cisco or Sony. Cisco has deep pockets while Sony makes great hardware and has a ton of media backing, imagine a psp running webos, or a webos phone with psp games, there can also be tablets, ereaders, PDA, all running the sweetness that is webos.

It’s been a long time since one could walk into a store and be ensured every product that had the word “SONY” on it was the best in its class.

      I’d say over ten years.

true but their VAIO laptops kick ass. take a beating but keep on ticking.

McDonalds comes out of nowhere and buys Palm. Soon relaunches the Pre as the McPhone!

Lol I couldn’t resist. Anyways, I think it will be sad when Palm gets purchased by anyone. Hopefully it will be a company that will keep the Palm sprit alive.

  • iName

    that would be god awful

  • crappy phones

i remember when palm was with one leg in the grave and they still declared ‘no windows mobile’ on palms devices… bad management

    • 2_cents

but Palm actually made several models with WinMobile.

Hey dont kno if anyone else suggested it but would like to see RIM acquire Palm. Blackberries i feel need a more interactive OS and not so suite and tie and definitely more flexible interface when it comes to there touchscreens which is where mostly all mobile companies are headed. They may mesh well they came from the same business corporate phone heritage, the old palms and blackberries…jus a wish from some1 who loves RIM but starting to want to explore the new of generation iPhone and Android options out there

YES! If we’re going to dream up our own crazy matches that are unlikely to ever happen, why don’t I hear this one more often? RIM = good hardware, dated stale OS. Palm = Sweet OS on crappy hardware. Palm has a heritage in supporting business and enterprise, and its contact synchronization capabilities would be sweet on a BB. I think RIM + Palm is seriously the best possible outcome of this.

i’m not sure HTC would risk their existing relationships with Google (android), MS, etc.
My bet is on Dell or even Google (merrge android and webOS!). Ultimately, it will be a big company looking to enter the mobile space with a solid OS.

  • Dustin

    Gotta be HTC!

  • Chad

If I was a betting person, I would say the winner will be HTC or Lenovo.

  • StevenGlansburg

I hope everything goes well for Palm. I really love my new Pre Plus.
