If you’re a fan of low-cost messaging phones with a social twist, prepare to lose your mind, for Nokia today announced three such devices in the C3, C6 and E5. The most basic of the bunch is the C3, which just so happens to be the first Symbian S40 device to ever feature a full-QWERTY keypad. It offers a 2.4″ QVGA display, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Ovi Chat, Ovi Mail and support for microSD cards up to 8GB. It will be be available in golden white, slate grey and hot pink in Q2 for 90€ ($122 USD). Next up is the C6. A full touchscreen with a sliding horizontal QWERTY keypad, the C6 bring to the table a 3.2″ 360×640 display, 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and Ovi Maps. Look for it next quarter for 220€ ($299 USD). Finally we have the E5. Expected to be available in Q3 for 180€ ($224 USD), it crams a 2.4″ QVGA display, 5 megapixel camera, HSDPA, GPS, Wi-Fi and support for Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes into its tiny candybar frame. As always, we’ve got Nokia’s little promo videos queued up after the break.

These should be pre-paid phones. There is really no defending Nokia any longer. This is laughable.

Nokia is a leader in low cost phone market. While I would never by any of these phones, I can see how they will be a good seller for 5500INR in a 1.2Bn people Indian market.

  • Sebastian Brannstrom

Yes, at those prices, they will be very popular pre-pay phones.

  • idk

    C6 looks really nice.

      looks like a mini N97

Is it just me, or do the two non-sliders, look like crappy Blackberry knock -offs?

For once we agree, I was wondering if RIM was the manufacturer also.

Just to add, I don’t think RIM’s wares are crappy though. I believe RIM serves their customers well. That would be why they sold a record number of devices last quarter.

This announcement marks the beginning of the end of RIM.

In the markets where subsidies don’t play less significant role than in the US, these models cost half or one third of the BBs. RIM is desperately trying to expand outside their traditional US markets, now saturated and facing competition from Iphone.

RIM is going to the direction of Motorola from now on. Isolated in the US markets and unable to renew themselves fast enough.

It makes sense to expand outside the U.S. After all, you know, the world smartphone market doesn’t just consist of the U.S. And any company with 42 percent of the U.S. smartphone market isn’t exactly in retrenchment; if anything, it will take a lot of time before either the Android alliance or Apple could get close.

Honestly, I don’t even think Apple has a chance; too consumer-oriented, too locked-in for most smartphone buyers; a design that, although still good, is aging fast; and the inability of Apple as a solo operator to meet any demand to even get to 42 percent. Android, on the other hand, could gain that much share if WinPhone 7 ends up being a dud; if WinPhone 7 works out, you will see both with equal shares of the market, eating at Apple’s share (and to a lesser extent, RIM through its consumer market).

And in the rest of the world, there is plenty of demand for a nice smartphone. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean people will want it; people in the rest of the world also look at their phones as fashion statements.

YES RIM does what they set out for ! which is served customers

    • Theonick

it does look like a 8520 knock off

  • AT

Well if you look at them as general improvements in the dumb phones segment….they are not so bad….I suppose

Looks like I’ll be on the E72 until the end of time for my qwerty needs.

These people are incapable of embracing Cortex. The N900 is based on someone else’ reference platform. Which explains why it’s the only device with good specs.

    Oh well.

Hope they sell well in PRC.

I’m moving on to the HTC Desire as my secondary device soon. I love S60 but this 2008 CPU is not going to cut it.

  • Brian

I’m gonna immediately upgrade my E72 to the new E5, oh wait, they’re EXACTLY THE SAME!

Just want to point a mistake in your write up. The C3 is an S40 phone, but S40 is not Symbian(that would be S60).

    • Chris

      True story.

  • User

That C3 looks like a great weekend phone.

  • DK

I think these are great low end devices. Only if Nokia would use the trackpad like RIM they’d be set.

  • Dara

The real achievement is that these are so cheap to buy.

The C6 is essentially an N97 at heart, but for half the price. This is what the C series is about, middle range technology at low end prices.

The E5 is essentially an E72, but for half the price.

Just so you guys know, the US makes up 8% of the world mobile market. Nokia is ensuring that it dominates the other 92% by bringing their segment defining smartphones down in price.

They’re a great company to buy from. There is still no contender that is an across the board update to my N95-3.

    Think about that…

I bought it 3 years ago, and picking any other phone (except for certain N series phones) would still involve a compromise today.

The last N series that they released was the N900, which is the best hardware on the market. Their next N series will probably be equivalent or better.

    • Nokia N900

And if the C3 has Skype I’m getting the hot pink one for all the women I know!

  • Cptnarcher

I have the C-3. Yes, I bought it as a goPhone, but it is better than any of my previous phones(Samsung, Nokia, and Sony) I got through the carrier(AT&T) and paid less. At $80 you really cannot beat this phone. I do not use the internet on my phone, but I like the look and feel of this phone. If I ever change my mind to use the internet, I will be able to use this phone. For all the smartphone users that could use a reliable backup phone here it is.

  • Cptnarcher

One more thing. If you are in the US market, you only have one color option. Crappy blue-gray.

  • Gabedewen

    i like the C3 hot pink ♥
