Uh, wow? Apple seems to have approved the much-hyped Opera Mini iPhone application according to, well, Opera. Apple has historically only approved web browsing applications that used the WebKit view that Apple includes as part of the iPhone OS SDK. Full press release is after the jump! What do you guys think?Opera Mini App approved for the App Store

Oslo, Norway – April 13, 2010 – Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market.

Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges.

“We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.”

The Opera Mini App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

I’m glad that Opera Mini finally got approved in the app store. It gives me a chance to have my bookmarks sync between my iPod, computer, and BlackBerry.

BTW: BGR does work in Opera Mini if you turn off the mobile view.

Hyperlinks take me into Safari (not I think what Opera had in mind) and browsing is not quick. it doesn’t handle anywhere near as smoothly as Safari.

    Removed… its sucks

it’s really really fast. a few quirks though. I’ll keep on testing it, like I said, it’s faaaaaaast!

Agreed. I am finding it to be very fast.

The one thing I don’t like is there seems to be only two views. Either full page or zoomed way in. There no ability to gradually zoom in or out via pinch.

Still Opera is pleasure and a viable option.

Its really fast on wifi especially. I’m keeping it, but overall Safari is better.

I tried it and like Safari much better. At least it was free.

  • Abe Aalen

Safari is IMO better, but that’s mainly due to its native status and integration.

The story here shouldn’t be whether one is better than the other, but rather that leading mobile browsers can be freely used on the iPhone.

It’s actually pretty fast. faster Than Safari but as it was forementioned Im going to have to test it a little longer.

  • jonathan

Yeah, Safari renders pages beautifully while Opera although fast doesn’t do as well. Still nice to have both installed and having another browser on the Iphone.

I love my iphone as much as the next guy but opera is better. Been using it all day great browser i have none of the problems u guys are having. Turn the mobile view of bgr off you have a smart phone view full sites.

Not really complaining about Opera, I think its great! I’m just saying rendering pages is still better on Safari and the pinch and zoom could have been added to Opera. Nevertheless, its great to have Opera when you are in an edge network area.

    Mini can’t do auto rotation.

Autorotate doesnt lock with button uppermost when laying in bed. Safari does.
