AT&T asks you to "Rethink Possible"

News

AT&T’s reputation has been dragged through the mud these past few years in no small part to its network issues, so it comes as little surprise that the company is all set to go through with a major rebranding effort. Based around the slogan “Rethink Possible” (Think Different much?), AT&T will position itself not as a communications giant but as purveyor of a progressive and innovative lifestyle. AT&T’s “Death Star” logo will remain, although the lowercase “at&t” will be dropped, while the overwhelming orange motif that assaults one’s senses will be discarded in favor of a wider spectrum of colors. The entire rebranding process will take a considerable amount of time given the sheer scope of the task, but let’s hope Luke Wilson’s reign of terror will be one of the first things to go.

IMO At&t is great. Its their 3G network that sucks. I use a 9700 and its balls awesome fast for internet and tethering, but when I wanna make phone calls I always drop the 3G down to Edge and I never drop a call. I just wish more phones had that option. My girlfriend’s 3Gs works perfectly, she leaves it on Edge when she’s not using the internet and she never drops a call.

On another note, I live in Boston and 3G is awesome here in terms of coverage. Who gives a fu** if they don’t have 3G in Bumblefuc*, North Dakota…

    • Matthew

I 500% agree with you. AT&T 2G is more reelable and judging by how many people bitch bout AT&T yet they iPhones that could easily switch to 2G, it’s ridiculous.

      • MicroNix

Umm, 2G is like a 9600 baud modem. Why would you *not* bitch about being dropped down to it???????????? Get real.

  • NuShrike

As if a stronger branding made GM’s products improve their quality. This is about MBAs trying to justify their worthless jobs.

  • mykie

how many times is at&t wireless/cingular/at&t going to rebrand itself?

i guess the reality finally set in that the adPhone (lol) alone wasnt going keep them afloat forever.

  • D-man

Forget the rebranding. How about better priced plans and fixing network holes and coverage issues? Rebranding before addressing these issues to the point where they aren’t issues is just putting frosting on a piece of coal – might look good, but it’s not edible.

Not to mention, it’s expensive to re-brand and ridiculous for such recognizable symbols to do anything other than focus on delivering great products and services.

everyone complains about the coverge sorry to tell you but every company has issues i want see verizon handle the iphone in there network in big populated areas there whole network will go down there data is soooo slow and please donttalk about sprint they have lost half million customers

  • Tom D

Isn’t there an app for that?

  • Chut Pata

When it comes to price plans, at&t sucks followed by Verizon. At least Verizon is good for travelling. They have Canada plan and they have coverage in every valley that my car passes during my travel.

The best plans are from Metro PCS who has the worst coverage. So I guess we have settle between T-Mobile and Verizon.

    • NSL15

Verizon good for travel? You’ve got to be kidding. Leave North America and they’re worthless.

Moreover, AT&T has made major improvements in the quality of both their voice and data networks. I’m in NYC, Phila, and DC a lot and I’m having no dropped calls at all in the last 6-8 months, except one place, the Ben Franklin Bridge on the downside on the NJ side.

Is AT&T’s coverage nationally as good as Verizon? Definitely not yet, but even their coverage has improved, and it’s getting closer every day.

I would love to see the iPhone on the Verizon network. I’ll bet they would totally flub with the huge uptick in 3G data use.

  • Alvaro

att has a canada plan as well a mexico plan you dumbass

    • Gsm1

      Gsm, Is the (world) Standard.

  • The UNZippee

I have not experienced these dropped call issues everyone has been seeming to have.

  • Ghostnyc

Fixing the brand?? What about fixing your network so that your customers don’t have to complain and damage the brand.

    • NSL15

The WSJ reports, AT&T will expectedly spend in the range of between $18 and $19 billion on network upgrades this year, an almost twofold increase over the carrier’s wireless network investment last year.

I’d say that’s investing in the network.

      • Blackice

Hope uncle steve is chipping in. haha

  • Frogford Ryder

No brand, logo, or slogan is going to change the “X” I get instead of signal bars. You would think that if they perceive a problem with their image, and it always has the same root cause, they would fix THAT instead of trying to rebrand themselves.

Doesn’t matter – I just paged thru the manual for the Incredible, and now I absolutely want it … I have about 20ish days left of “X” signal …

    • uncle

guess what at&t still made 124 billion last year

      • haha

Guess what… IT’S A BUSINESS!!! IF THEY DON’T MAKE MONEY WHAT’S THE POINT!!! God forbid you ever start your own business….

  • andy

at&t is changing because they can’t call themselves “Americas Fastest Network”. That honor
    belongs to T-mobile. (21mbps)

    • StevenGlansburg

I have gotten around 6 mbps in parts of Cincinnati where I barely broke 1.2 with At&t. I like to laugh at At&t’s commercials when they say the fastest network, but why isn’t T-mobile advertising it?

      • artz86

Because in terms of footprint, Tmo’s HSDPA+ network isn’t anything significant. Now, when Tmo does cover their entire network w/ HSDPA+, at&t might have to change their advertising, but that’s if and when.

      • andy

T-mo said by the end of 2010.

      • Matthew

        At it’s fastest, AT&T 3G will break 8mbs. AT&T is the fastest 3G network

      • andy

        Mathew,
at&t hsdpa 7.2mbs max. at&t has no plan to deploy hsdpa+. T-mo is deploying hsdpa+ as we speak. thats 21mbs. do some fact checking and you will find out the.

“AT&T will position itself not as a communications giant but as purveyor of a progressive and innovative lifestyle”

So people pay a monthly fee for wireless lifestyle…

What the F%&K is wireless lifestyle?

  • latinjersey

    @andy,
show us a speed test of tmobile clocking 21 megs?!?! I can show one of my iPhone clocking over 2megs a sec. which is by far the fastest of anyone in the US.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • Brett

If i recall correctly no phone supports above 7.2 mbps using HSPA/HSDPA currently, so I doubt anyone without a 3g modem that supports HSPA+ will get those speeds right?

    • andy

With T-Mobile promising to roll out HSPA 7.2 by years end, and HSPA+ 21Mbps by the middle of 2010, a few lucky residents of Philly have already been blessed with T-Mobile’s ultra fast 3G network. A lucky individual over at jkontherun was kind enough to share his hands-on experience with T-Mobile’s HSPA+, currently live in the Philadelphia area. Using a T-Mobile webConnect USB stick the individual started out and tested T-Mobile’s current 3G network, which resulted in speeds around 1.11 Mbps download and 0.67 Mbps upload speeds. Then the individual used the same hardware in the HSPA+ test network, and noticed speeds noticeably increased, yielding, 5.58 Mbps download and 1.23 Mbps upload. That’s some blazing fast mobile speeds! The individual also tested the HSPA+ network out on the Nokia N900 which supports T-Mobile USA 3G bands. NONE of these Networks are perfect..

    VW=Slow 3G
    AT&T=Dropped calls
    Sprint=coverage
    T=Mob=coverage

    • uncle

really sprint and tmobile dont ever comment in your whole entire life

  • Shaun

Luke wilson’s commercials are alot better then “can your phone search human”!! I live in Omaha and AT&T 3g way better then verizon and there reps know alot more too. A verizon rep seriously tried to tell me that I would never need the wifi on the droid because there 3g is just as fast.

    • HemDroid

No way those Luke commercials are so …. Angry

ATT might want to rethink how they can get me reception for my iphone at my office, which is only 1/2 mile from an ATT tower.
I’m so tired of everyone complaining that I won’t answer my phone, and my calls go straight into voicemail. Love my iphone, but ATT service stinks.

    • DubYa

Just because there is a cell phone tower by your office doesn’t mean it is an AT&T tower.

    • Blackice

Um, you could get a phone that has good r.f.

  • Joe Butler

The immense amount of money needed to change out all their brand imagery ie. signs, posters, commercials, displays, etc… would be much better spent improving their much neglected network. Spend the money where it matters.

    • anonymous

have you ever thought that in addition to re-branding they are also investing 18-19 billion dollars into the network as well this year. Why would a company ever rebrand without changing the basics as well?

  • JR

Dont’ worry DubYa……….I know it’s an ATT tower. Trust me.
Most people I know who work in block buildings around here use Sprint for this very reason. They can get reception where ATT customers can’t. I used my friend’s Sprint Blackberry for a day in my office, and I got great reception. But with my Iphone, I get nothing. I have to get up and go outside my office if I want to make a call on my phone.

  • MicroNix

    I did re-think possible. That’s why I’m not with AT&T!

  • elchita.

its nice to have a choice in carriers. its also nice to choose a bandwidth for your phone.

  • Zack

I just ported 62 lines to AT&T from verizon. I’m in the north east and verizon was horrible
