End of an era: "Get a Mac" ads rumored to be finished

General

get-a-mac

Apple’s “Get a Mac” TV spots featuring Justin Long and John Hodgman may soon be a thing of the past if the suspicions of its two stars are correct. During an interview with AV Club, Long was asked about the future of the now iconic commercials that have been on the air since 2006. His response? “You know, I think they might be done. In fact, I heard from John, I think they’re going to move on. I can’t say definitively, which is sad, because not only am I going to miss doing them, but also working with John.” It’s a bit of a shame considering how hilarious they once were, but on the other hand Apple is in serious need of a fresh approach to all of its ads. We mean, if Palm can do it

Well… maybe it’s because they ran so long they turned into ads for the PC. Everyone loves an underdog.

    • SunglassesAtNight

You have an excellent point. Ad campaigns, for ANY product, that does nothing but talk trash about the competitor doesn’t exactly resonate with people… IN THE LONG RUN.
At first we all laugh, but then at some point it start to look like bullying and gets old. ESPECIALLY when your competitor makes moves to improve and the old trash talk is no longer relevant.

And bullying leads to kids shooting the shit out of each other.

I have no clue how that all connects. You figure it out.

      • bizguy

LOL. So, you’re saying that ads on TV leads to dead kids in the school yard.

Wow…you must work for FOX News.

      • crescentdave

@ bizguy: I found your sense of humor. Can I email it back to you?

  • eb

Too bad… I’m not a big commercial or Apple fan, but that was one of the most entertaining add campaigns. John Hodgman is pretty funny. I guess we will just have to hope he does more Daily Show appearances.

  • Michael N

good thing to, one less stupid ad on the bewb toob, now if we can just RID of those stupid “give back that fish” McDonald’s ads we’d be set.

  • Darnell

More proof Windows 7 really is that good :-D !

    • acquaz10

Windows 7 sucks. I tried using it the other day. I didn’t like it at all. I’m not even an Apple fanboy. I just prefer the OS for school, its easier for me.

      • Jim

Windows 7 is great….I find it to be the best OS yet. But I did do a clean install so the fact that there is 0% bloatware on the computer could be making a huge difference.

      • T

Yeah… I was a Mac user for the past few years. 10.6 is Apple’s Vista. Seriously. It’s awful. Forced me to Windows 7, and I enjoy it.

      • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

Actually, System 7 was Apple’s Vista, or MS’s BOB, however you would like to phrase that.

      • T

Ok.. then Snow Leopard is equivalent to Windows ME. It doesn’t matter how you want to slice it. Snow Leopard is terrible. They’ve just got a full head of steam right now and will plow thru it. Hopefully 10.7, or whatever is next, works better. I’m sick of the spinning pinwheel/beachball or whatever you want to call that obnoxious thing that shows up even for the simplest of tasks, like hitting Cmd-Q.

      • Flixoman

“I just prefer the OS for school, its easier for me.”

        Stupid is as stupid does.

      • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

Yeah, that guy is an idiot. I mean, getting an education and all. Stupid people.

      • Flixoman

No problem with him getting an education. From the looks of it…he needs it!

    • eric

As a Mac fanboy, I salute your savvy wit!

  • kusgan

    mac is overpriced and overrated..

  • Perspective

Palm didn’t dump their ad agency bcause they wanted something new. . .they did it because their sales are atrocious. Apple’s sales are terrific, so it’s not exactly an appropriate comparison you’re making, even before you recall that Palm is now a joke of a company. Comedy.

  • Steve

So so sick of Justin Long and his nerd ‘shtick’. We get it. He’s not ‘hot’ so he goes for the nerd roles. Does he even use a Mac? Windows 7 is phenomenal and I’m betting the HP Slate is a whole lot better than the ipad.

    • Mark

Yea I found this an odd transition. He is supposed to embody “hip and cool” in these commercials. Despite the fact that his most recent big role before the commercials was as the huge dork in Dodgeball.

      • Workman

He was also in Accepted, He’s Just Not That Into You, and Live Free or Die Hard. If your not considered “cool” by being in an action movie with Bruce Willis… then I don’t know what cool is.

    • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

Hard to determine what a product is or isn’t if it has not shipped. People were saying what the iPad was and wasn’t before it’s release too. People, wait for a product to launch and then we can discuss it’s merits.

    • Sliznut

I’m pretty sure the Slate is a completely different animal than the iPad.

  • Marco SR

They are stopping them because Windows 7 is great. Apple can’t poke at Microsoft anymore. So sad. So true!

    • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

So great in fact that the Apple stores are still full of people switching to Macs. So great that business’s are still running XP (all my counties offices included.). You know your product and brand are crap when you can not get your locked in customers to upgrade to you “latest and greatest”.

1998 Windows share of the OS market 95%
2010 Windows Share of the OS market 87%

One goes up with a great business plan
Same goes down by not adjusting for the times.

      • http://hotcakespodcast.com teezecrost

You can read that however you want, Jerrett. You could also argue, that maybe XP was good enough for those people, or that less savvy people are easily swayed by shiny advertising.
Both OS and Win are both robust, mature systems. I don’t understand these “huge differences” people are fabricating in their minds. Get a life and get some work done, already! they’ll both do the trick.

      • T

Most businesses are running XP still because businesses adopt new tech late. Buying the licenses and deploying them, as well as ensuring every system works on a new OS, is a mammoth undertaking. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were a large number of NT computers still in use. Businesses will adopt W7, it’ll just be in a few years after the OS has proven itself stable and reliable, like XP.

      • Tyler

That is very true,in the military we just got windows vista on government computers last year like 9 months before 7 came out. It’s just not really on big companies priorities to upgrade the os that they use

      • Deeko

Jarrett – Windows 7, to date, is Microsoft’s fastest selling operating system of all time. It has double sales in the opening months compared to Vista.

        http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/196316.asp#extended

Also, post your sources on OS marketshare – the latest numbers I’ve seen have Microsoft at 92% in March 2010.

      • bizguy

And, every IT admin I’ve spoken to is eager to upgrade to Win7. As others have said, in the business world, the transition take time due to testing and budgeting in a recessionary period.

      • crescentdave

Let’s not cloud the issue with facts …

      • Tdot34

HAHA 87% market share for Windows, and you are cheering about all these people switching to Macs…. I believe the market has spoken on what OS is better. When Macs break into 51% Market share then you can cheer for the greatness of Macs

Until then you can have the ONLY thing Macs trump over Windows… the lack of Virus’.

      • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

I don’t have to cheer one way or the other. Microsoft isn’t going anywhere with their dominance on the desktop for a long time. People understand today that there really is a choice in the desktop space. Ten to fifteen years ago they didn’t really think there was a chance. You can not deny that Apple is growing faster than any other tech company and faster than the industry. It is fact. As Apple gains marketshare others lose marketshare.

I know for a fact that you are not a stupid person, I read your posts. How many people make PC’s running windows? Alot, and all those companies have to compete with each other on price. This brings the prices down and makes the consumer happy (until the have a slow buggy system from all the crapware to off set the losses for being competitive).

Now, how many people make PC’s running Mac OS X (legally running Mac OS X)? One, and they don’t have to compete with anyone but themselves. Apple isn’t in the market to get the most marketshare. Sure they gain a little each quarter and each year but that is only because they are a completely vertical company. They have no competition. This is why Apple’s profits for last quarter were 3x’s what Dell’s were for Dell’s whole year.

Apple keeps making money because they take care of their customers. Do we pay a premium for that? Absolutely we do, and gladly. Microsoft keeps making money because all their partners keep making computers with Microsoft’s OS’s and paying MS lincensing fees. Microsoft makes the same money, it’s parts fight for scraps.

Every PC manufacturer wishes they were Apple, in every regard.

  • Harry Johnson

They will be replaced with “Get a Mac with faulty wifi…like the brand new iPad!!!!”

    • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

600,000 iPads by the end of today. Not bad for a 5 day total. What I find odd is the Wifi issues. Some people have them and some people don’t. Considering the numerous WiFi base stations out there this was bound to happen for the first gen products. That is why you always wait for the B revision of the product. Or wait until the first round of software updates.
Adopting early in tech is always an adventure, it’s why I quit being an early adopter after Windows 98.

  • quest

Dang it! I really liked those commercials…

  • idk

that mac guy looks like the skinny version of luke wilson ;D

  • kusgan

I don’t really need an expensive machine for facebooking, onemangaing and ebaying. Windows 7 is more that enough. A lot of computer users are just doing email and facebook. Mac is again overpriced and overrated.

    • Sliznut

I agree personally, but the Mac fills a space some people need. I look at it like this: I know how to fix computers and make them do what I want. My mom doesn’t. (just using her as an example) If it weren’t for me coaching her through tasks on the PC and fixing things that went wrong hardware wise, I’d probably suggest she use a Mac and have Applecare. That way she has no personal worries. Well, and if she had a few extra grand to throw around. lol

      • quest

You folks who say Macs are expensive are way out there. When was the last time you checked prices?

I agree Macs cost more than the cheapest PC you can find (and Dell and HP make many cheap low-end PCs too). But if you compare a high-end PC build with quality parts, latest features, etc. — compare that with a Mac. All macs have high-end quality, and even the cheapest mac has good performance.

Compare them based on technical specs (CPU, RAM, HD, video MPU/RAM, HD/DVD drive, video-out, built-in audio, display/monitor, etc).

If you do a real comparison — you will find macs are about the same (sometimes cheaper) than the EQUIVALENT PC.

Another way to compare them correctly is the OS. The Mac OS X is much more efficient too. It can do everything with less than 1GB of memory, while Win7 needs minimum 4GB to do the same stuff (e.g. load the OS, run a few apps).

And OS X was around in 2006 doing what Win7 does now (meaning MS copied most features from OS X, which had the same features years ago).

So if you did price a PC and Mac with equivalent hardware, then when you throw in the OS difference, the Mac would be smokin’ fast compared to the same Win7 PC.

I have an iMac from a few years ago – it had full HD video (1920×1080) video out which I plug into my large screen monitor – and with a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse I can sit in my living room and surf or do everything on a big widescreen FULL HD, from my couch! All for the price of a PC laptop.

And my Mac NEVER crashes!!!! I’ve left it on for months – we switch between different login accounts, do HiDef video editing (cool easy!), the kids play games, etc etc.

And if I ever need to (which is almost never), I can run PC apps natively on it using VMware. I have my mac networked with other Windoze PCs and everything works – it just works!!

So if you don’t OWN both systems and don’t know the guts of both technologies – DO NOT COMPARE UNINTELLIGENTLY OR SPOUT YOUR UNINFORMED BELIEFS.

  • bizguy

These ads made me like PC even MORE. John Hodgman rules!

    • WhyNoLikeyMe

LMAO! True! Maybe they should have gone with someone nerfarious… like OJ Simpson, to be the ‘PC’. The PC is guy is too likable.

      • Flixoman

Mac: Hi, I’m a Mac. With me, you dont have to worry about virues or anything!

OJ: Hi, I’m a PC. With my new Windows defener program you dont have to worry about viruses either. I’ll put on these Isotoner gloves and just slash, and slash, and SLASH so those no good, cheating whore viruses get what they deserve. And then when I am done, I will dispose of the evidence and claim that it was just a plot by the man to keep me down. Mac? Hey, Mac? You feel like driving around with me in the back of your Bronco?

    • conncr

However, John Hodgman is a confirmed Mac user!

      • (The real Jarrett) Jarrett

They both are. Justin Long once told the stories of going into Apple stores to purchase items and getting 10% because they notice him. The problem was always the same though, under his contract he was granted 15% off. He can never get himself to say “hey, what about my other 5%”.

        It was pretty funny stuff.

      • teknophelia

lol, apple couldn’t even hook their hipster doofus spokesman up. And why would anyone think he was cool in Live Free or Die Hard… he was a complete sack of ass in that movie. Really though I’m just feeding a troll here

  • Onceuponatime

Win7? Mac OSx? What? Our pc’s ata work are still running win98 and Microsoft 2000 professional! Haha

  • Mark

    MAC: “Hi I’m a Mac”

    PC: “Oh, you’re gay? Cool!”

  • dino

you give pc for free I won t take it

  • jpg

well, they’re two talented guys, i’m sure that if this does end for them, they’ll have other options in the pipeline.

  • FarmerBob

Justin is right. Apple needs to freshen “all” their ads. Resting on passé laurels get old real quick. New times, New toys, Time to move on.

  • America

I don’t know which of these dorks I’ll be happier to see less of.
