If the steady stream of new handsets filling up shops weren’t enough proof that Google’s Android OS is booming like never before, then the fact the Android Market underwent tremendous growth in March surely is. AndroidLib.com, which closely monitors the Android Market, noted that 9,330 free and paid applications appeared within the 31 day period. Representing a gain of 68% over February’s 5,532 new applications, March’s growth amounts to a staggering 58.5% increase in the number of available applications as a whole. If the number of applications continues at the pace it is going today, April will see the market receive just over 6,700 new applications.

Man, you fandroids are a bunch of horndogs with all the porn stuff. Lets keep it clean and get back to flaming each other.

  • Lime

Yeah how many of them are worth the shit? 100?

    • Eric

There are lots of worthless iPhone apps. I have an iPod Touch and there is some total crap out there.

      • MikeD

I’m guessing you are just fishing for a bunch of “+” in an Android thread, because there are lots of worthless apps in general for all these smartphones.

If you haven’t used any other device then i understand how you arrive at what you are saying. But if you broaden your experience, you’ll find the exact same thing across all these app phones.

    • MikeD

C’mon. I can already tell you the Droid and the Nexus One are very good. There’s no such thing as a perfect phone for everyone but I read about people happy with their choice in an Android device.

      Ease up.

    @lime.
Same can be said for apple. I have iPod touch also and the quality of apps are about the same.

I love my Nexus, and loved my G1 before it. IRT the Market, too bad the majority of those 9300 are probably skins or themes for certain apps, or live wallpapers lately =(

Out of every 200 apps I check out for Android, most are mediocre, but then there’s one in the bunch that REALLY shines. Not sure if it’s the same with Apple’s market, I’ve never jumped on that bandwagon.

That being said, the quality of apps is really improving. Seen some REALLY cool ones lately!

Apple should start to be concerned. They could be thinking right now that maybe they should have launched the iPhone on all U.S. carriers. By waiting to do so they have let Android develop a decent (and growing) user base.

Competition is good for all of us. I won’t have an iPhone while it is tied to AT&T and I have checked out the Droid when it came out and it isn’t there for me…. yet. I could see myself getting an Android phone though.

In the meantime, I will stick to my iPod Touch and my Blackberry Tour. I love my consolidated inbox and BB Messenger! :)

How people quickly forget the Verizon, turned down the iPhone.

And recently the Verizon CEO asked Apple to roll out a CDMA iPhone for their network.

I don’t think Apple is worried at all. Android is an OS, the iPhone is a Device.

Android, iPhone and Blackberry markets continue to grow and there is diverse enough tastes to support all.

Just installed, thanks for the heads up.

My friend showed me the market on his android and all I saw was tons of free trash that for the most part cant be used… I would rather pay for an app with better quality but it was very hard to sift through and find them. I do see a difference in the Iphone market and I think WinPho 7 will try to have better apps as well. Personally I think WinPho 7 will eat the market share away from Android as more devices start coming out.

You Fandroids can dislike this comment all you want but its the truth!!

The more attention Android gets, the haters appear on these sites

    • MikeD

Excuse me? Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black?

While I agree the haters in this thread need to be stop. Go in to an iPhone or any Apple related thread and you’ll see venom that pro-Android folk spew incessantly.

What’s with all the extremism on this site. All sides really need to take a step back.

Only difference is the Anti Apple crowd has alot more to work with then the Anti Android crowd. It amazes me how many extremely customer unfriendly policies Apple gets away with. No Removable battery, No Insurance, his newest decree is Not using Screen Protectors on the Iphone or Ipod Touch, No Podcasting, No Bittorrent, No carrier support (One of the reasons Verizon turned them down originally was due to the fact that they forbid Verizon from servicing the phone like it does for every other model), instead you have to trek to an Apple store which aren’t exactly growing on trees at this point. The Iphone runs very well but it does impose alot of unneccesary and arbitrary rules when using it.

@ mobile guru – I wonder where you got the idea for your user name??? Nice way to be original

  • Kimberly

Wow! That’s almost 1/4th as many monthly iPhone apps!

  • Sally

Not sure who made that graph… but why in the world would you add a line for “April’s total” when it’s only April 7th?

    Braindead.

    • Uni

It’s to show the growth as of this month, in 7 days, the number of apps has almost hit what was added in all of July 09′.

  • V For Ve

I completely agree with Eric. I really wanted an iPhone, and was willing to wait 3-4 years until it came out on Verizon. At the time there was nothing remotely close to it. But with Android now a close competitor Apple will lose a lot of potential customers on other carriers.
I am not waiting for Verizon iPhone anymore and will be picking up the HTC Incredible whenever it comes out. And as more apps get added to Android Market, I will be less likely to switch to iPhone. Just as most iPhone users are not likely to switch to Android. Most people have a lot of money invested in the apps which makes it harder to walk away from that platform.

  • Joe B

Android is a growing competitor and has really had some remarkable growth over the past four months. They’ve increased their market share by nearly 250% since December and even in Androids early near infancy stages they are already including all sorts of features and raw functionality that The Iphone in its third generation has yet to see. The Open Source App Store was also a great idea as more and more developers are becoming increasingly annoyed at Apples stringent and arbitrary control of their app store. Removing thousands of pre-approved apps randomly one day is a good way to piss off the people making them for you. Iphone is a very solid touchscreen smartphone and had the luxury of no real competition for years but with the quality of the Android phones currently on the market as well as the upcoming models that look insane, Apple is going to have to throw out their policy of witholding features and functionality and is really going to have to make substantial improvements to their 4G model in developement to keep up with the functionality of Android.

  • Joe B

I’m sure the majority of people reading this already know and use this but for anyone that isn’t, the free app “Advanced Task Killer” is a must have. One touch app to immediately close all the numerous apps and things running in the background of your Android phone. Saw a guy that was complaining about batery life and after downloading this app found that he unknowingly had 22 different tasks running simultaneously. Remember people these things multitask so this app is a great free way to manage your battery life no use having everything on your phone run if your not using them.

Android is taking over the market. I have an Archos tablet that runs on Android but will get the phone soon.

Nice comment. I liked how you used metaphors to prove your point.
