Opera Mini for iPhone submitted to Apple for approval

It can’t be a good thing when you have to send out a press release stating that your probably-going-to-be-rejected application has been submitted to probably-be-rejected. Nevertheless, this is exactly what Opera did this morning as it waits for Apple’s approval team to do their thing and check over the code for Opera Mini for iPhone. Naturally there’s a feeling Apple might deny the app since it’s a duplication of a native iPhone function, but from what Opera feels, it should meet Apple’s erratic standards. As we all wait to find out if this will turn into yet another App Store fiasco, hit up the jump to check out the app in actions. It’s quite impressive.

I will be switching to the iphone in July when the new one comes out. I’m sick of the DROID and the force closures. Android just isn’t what sites like BGR said it would be…

    • Matt Thompson

So, what? You just read BGR and don’t make opinions for yourself? Okay.

    • RT

since apparently you like to have people tell you what to think and do you will fit in nicely with apple

    • T-Monster

att andoid isnt, maybe you should try real android before you decide.

To be honest I think it’s a great thing with or without an approval. If approved we have a great new browser that we can try out and see for ourselves if it indeed is better than Safari on the iPhone. If it is not approved, it will make Apple build some of it’s cool features into Safari and possibly faster than it was planning before.

Win Win for us iPhone owners.

I can already tell you that from watching the video it will get rejected. Why, well because is’s far more superior then Safari, and Apple doesn’t like anything on its iPhone superior to what they offer.

I suspect you’re right but rejected for another reason, as Apple would not want to allow a browser that might be a potential risk to the iPhone o/s. I dont know enough to speak with authority on that but the layman would expect the tight controls of Apple to persist on this too. The hacking attempts on the iphone Safari browser will allow Apple to strengthen Safari and they would learn all the sooner.

The BIG difference between Safari and Opera-Mini is that whilst Safari interprets all incoming web data directly on the phone, OM uses an external server to process web data and then uses OM on the phone as a display device. This is a much faster process than Safari can ever acomplish but it has the following disadvantages:
      - security, all your viewed web pages are know to a 3rd party (Opera).
      - bandwidth, if everybody uses OM then I am pretty sure that the external servers will overload
      - reliability, if the external server(s) ever fail, no webpages.

I’m sure Apple will allow Oprea when they feel your ready for it. Just like 3rd party multitasking and MMS. You will get that when THEY feel your ready for it.

Of course if they don’t approve it, just give it a day, and it will show up in Cydia instead……

    @StevenGlansburg,
flash allows for a genuine, full, Internet experience. Flash may one day be replaced but right now it’s everywhere.

some sites I would like to be able to visit:

    Justin.tv
    homestarrunner.com
    tikilive.com
    southparkstudios.com
    alluc.org

Not to mention local newspaper sites and other assorted sites where all I see is a blue lego with a question mark.

I have never had a problem streaming video on att’s 3g network, through tethering or on the iPhone.

skyfire operates in the “cloud” so it would make the streaming experience smooth on iPhones, but is available on winmo

Maybe they found a way to put more reesolution into that crappy low-res screen. 840×480 3.7inch Droid FTW

  • Tim

What’s the point? We all know Steveo will reject it….

I’d rather have fennic or mobile firefox but this is sweet. I wonder if mozilla will submit an app if opera get ok’d. It’s a long shot that opera will make it in but we can all hope. Too bad we can’t switch wich browser is the native browser or media player or pictures app…
