Microsoft to enable USB mass storage for the Xbox 360?

Joystiq got its hands on leaked documentation that suggests the Xbox 360 will support USB mass storage devices in the near future. Screenshots lifted from the documents reveal support for externally connected devices well over the 512MB capacity of Microsoft’s current Xbox 360 memory units which are presumably now on the road to obsolescence. A note within the document from a Microsoft software engineer also acknowledges the proliferation of high capacity, high speed USB storage devices and confirms that Microsoft will release an Xbox 360 system update in 2010 to provide support for this inexpensive class of external storage. This added feature is good news for those XBOX 360 owners whose core system has limited or no on-board storage as they will be able to add up to two 16GB USB flash drives and use them in lieu of the pricey Microsoft add-on hard drive. With the ability to cheaply add on 32GB of storage, that Xbox 360 Arcade and its sub $200 price tag looks a bit more attractive, no?

    Cool.

Would be cooler if it were more than 32GB, but it’s a start.

This is awesome news. I’ve been looking to replace my xbox I got on release. Almost splurged on a new one last week. Ill happily hold out now!

You may still want to hold out a big longer, there are rumors of a redesigned 360 coming out when Natal does.

I wish they would let people upgrade HD’s to SSD’s.

  • Andriod is gay

The average SSD drive is $225. Which is almost as much as the system itself.

They need to let me link it to my Apple 2TB wifi time capsule.

Hey I think I saw this same article on engadget like a day or two ago. It’s like deja vu reading BGR lately…

I would wait first for them to announce that you can only use Microsoft USB storage devices, which inherently will cost 3 times over the average market value.

why do you need external storage when you have windows machines on your network? i stream everything from music to movies to shows that are on my harddrives of every computer on my network. big deal.

One answer: Saving games on a non-proprietary, non-overpriced hard drive!!

I wish there was an edit button, let me explain my situation: I had a 20GB HD, thing was a buggy piece of junk that caused me headaches and it wasn’t until 2 years later I figured out I had a bad hard drive, not a bad Xbox. So recently I had no choice and through a combination of memory cards and overpriced 60GB HD ($115 for a paltry 60GB, my butt is bleeding from the raping), moved all my saves over to the new HD. (Transfer cable does not come w/ 60GB HD and I wasn’t about to wait 45 minutes on hold over the phone to order one).
Sooo… had this USB option been available, I could have saved myself tons of trouble and money. I don’t even need 60GB, but wasn’t about to drop $100 on another lame 20GB. Had I been able to use a 32GB card… jeez, it would have a wonderful experience.

Thank you sweet Jeebus! I have been waiting for this since my 40 dollar 512k memory card was ganked. Fucking stupid to have usb slots without this functionality in the first place. Can the update be now please?
