Verizon Wireless and Skype integration explained through animation

VZW Skype Video

Last month, Verizon Wireless and Skype announced their exclusive partnership in the U.S., along with their plans to bring Skype’s popular VoIP calling and messaging service to your Verizon cell phone. Now, through the miracle of animation — and the help of a woman with a really high pitched voice — Verizon and Skype are shedding a little light on how Skype integration will work on your phone. The video doesn’t get too in-depth, but we do learn that Skype calls will arrive to your Verizon Wireless handset just as normal calls do and the Skype application will run, always on, in the background. The two companies also confirm that Skype calls will not be charged against the minutes in your mobile plan and users of Skype Out will be able to leverage competitive international calling rates from their handset. This got us thinking: we don’t have enough Skype contacts to justify leaving Skype running all day chewing up battery life, but how about you? Do you have a Skype contact list full of friends you are itching to talk to?

My Skype contact list is not huge – but if it starts saving us a good chunk of money, you can bet it will get that way.

  • AusFest

So will people on other networks be able to use skype as well? I really dont need skype to call verizon to verizon. No I dont want this shit running in the background all day eating up my battery!

  • Lucifer5669

Seeing that verizon can’t do simultaneous voice and data, will this mean you miss all voice calls while using skype?

    • AusFest

I dont think that will be the case, youll probably just have to chose to take the incoming call or ignore it. Just like you do now if your searching the web.

      • red014

Yeah, Verizon has had a voice over data priority on their network for a looong time. It even has a fancy acronym that I can’t remember. I’m sure that with a little planning they can have the call either routed to Skype if you’re using it or have the Skype call suspended but not terminated when the traditional call comes in.

or turn on the wi-fi on a device like the droid which does then let you make a phone call & stay put on the web.

So Jack has to always be at his computer but I’m on the run, doing things, working, shopping, etc but Jack is in his mom’s basement on his Skype. So realistically, when I’m on the run, Jack is too. And the odds we’re sitting at the computer at the same time is slim to none so how’s ’bout I just call Jack? Or IM him using 1000000 other applications that I don’t need chewing up my battery 24/7.

    • Chris

Or Jack is running Skype on his mobile as well, and the problem is solved…

The only thing I want to know is if I will be able to use Skype over WiFi to call non Skype users. I only know of 1 person who uses Skype so it is usless to me. I travel outside the U.S. couple times a year and don’t want to pay for international calls.

    • Andrew Munchbach

You’ll need Skype Out minutes to call from Skype to a cell/land line phone.

      • Trevor G

Ok thanks. I was specifically getting at is I could see Verizon not allowing us to us Wifi to make call. I don’t want to have to use my “Unlimited Data” 5GB data plan. Plus EVDO data in other countries may not work hence I want to use Wifi. This is probably obvious but I have not looked into all the details yet. Thanks for the info.

      • Chris

Traditionally Skype has always worked over wifi, so…. I would assume this verizon optimized version would as well.

  • Mike

So Skype Mobile to Skype PC will be free and Skype Mobile to Skype Mobile will be charged a premium?

    • Chris

Its never been that way in the past… So I assume you’ll still be able to do Skype Mobile to Skype Mobile just as we’ve always been able to do.

  • http://techmoose.net tech moose

the way Verizon is going, it is gonna eat up AT&T soon.

  • Sal

If you watch carefully, notice you cannot do Skype Phone to Skype Phone, only Skype Phone to Skype Computer. I’m sure some hackers will fix that though! ;p

    • Chris

In the past Skype Phone to Skype Phone has always worked…

So I unless VZ cripples this, we’ll still be able to do Skype Mobile Phone to Skype Mobile Phone just as we’ve always been able to do.

Wow Andrew, you’re only a couple days late on this news. Must be a slow day at BGR.

    • red014

Seems that unless it’s an exclusive phone review, they’re usually a few days late on news lately…

  • Ben

    Data only plan?

  • Brian

I text waaaaaay more than I call so I never really get Amy where close to my minutes

  • Jordan

Here’s what I love about this app… When I’m away from my office, and I want to call my buddies overseas, who are on Skype, I’ll be able to reach them…FREE! I think the only ones who are griping about the announcement are the ones who won’t have access to it.

  • Tim

The thing really missing from this is that you can use skype for international calls but cannot use skypeout for domestic calls to landlines and cells. That would have been awesome.

  • T

Wow… so when I kept trying to get people to recognize when the initial announcement was made, and an update to the article covering it, that this service is over standard voice and not 3G, I was an idiot… now someone that’ll never work at Disney makes a terrible animated video that explains it in pictures and the light bulb goes on? I’ll remember that next time I want to correct misconceived notions and mail people flip-book animations that I scribble on post-it notes… that’ll get noticed.

Glad I downloaded the WINMO version the day before they discontinued it! Long live Skype and free calls on expensive VZW!

  • Steve

This is a great app for verizon to get partnership with, but most people don’t call international. Many people will come in to a store, the sales rep will try to sell them on the idea, and the customer will say, I don’t need that. Just like they said for a camera, and text, and data. Now fast forward to know, and grandma is using text. About 3 texts a month. But she pays per text because a plan does not make sense yet. 5% of new people will use this not including the people who use it now. Maybe looks good for future. Besides, most people who are savy enough to use skype are the same techies who text all day an don’t call anyone. Just saying.

  • Steve

And one last thing, just like any other carrier, don’t think using this app will save you money, it will balance out. There is no way a company will come out with a new cool hip feature to give you more stuff for less money.

    • StevenGlansburg

certainly it wouldn’t be verizon at least. this is really just a way to charge more people for data.

  • Joe

***$29.99 Data Plan Required for use on Verizon Wireless.

I put in the fine print that they didn’t.

  • http://www.timhaines.com Tim

I think this is a pretty pointless partnership. In fact it’s potentially damaging.
-Mobile phones are being used less and less for actually calling
-This isn’t the 90s. Talk-time isn’t really expensive anymore, especially with these new unlimited plans, and AT&T’s rollover model
-Do we REALLY think 3G is reliable enough to support voice calling as well as the cellular network?
-This partnership could prove poisonous for Skype’s relationship with other carriers, and ultimately their user-base on other networks. We’re already seeing delays in the rollout of Skype’s 3G-calling update for iPhone, and we’ve seen Skype for S60 become a little harder to get, having been ripped out of the Ovi store.
I don’t like this partnership. It’s a dumb idea in a world where people are using their thumbs more than their vocal chords whenever they pick up their smartphones. But that’s just me

  • StevenGlansburg

Skype is a novelty that other companies like Google have surpassed. Gtalk, AIM, MSN, and so on are how people talk via video chat or just voice if they want.

    • Verizon Guy

Not so–the services you mentioned are popular in North America (and MSN has a strong Asian following oddly enough) but Skype is more popular and more accessible around the globe.

      • StevenGlansburg

Well America is the only country that matters so what’s your point?

  • Verizon Guy

My gf works for a non-profit and she’s ecstatic about this. I guess while her company can afford international long distance rates, the agencies she works with in Haiti, Africa and Southeast Asia cannot. This will allow her to take calls from these countries while mobile rather than being tethered to a PC during overseas business hours. Most of her international conference calls are hosted through Skype–so we’ll be interested to see if this partnership supports one-to-many or just one-to-one Skype calling.

I have a fiance living in Australia, and she uses skype to get ahold of all her family and friends cause it is free. I am always busy, so it is exciting that I may be able to keep up with her on the go from my phone, since international calling on verizon without an international calling plan is sooooo expensive (1.65 a minute to Australia last i checked.) The ways that this will open up Verizons network will have huge implications on the cell phone industry in ways that none of us can be sure of yet :D

    • http://www.shutup.com DeezNutzBeoches

      @ Corey

You should consider Vonage (they have a Blackberry and iPhone app now) or get a Windows Mobile or Nokia phone. I’ve been using Skype over Wi-fi and cell data plan since Windows Mobile 5. It works great. About one and a half years ago I switched to Fring and Nimbuzz which are multichat applications that support Facebook, MSN, AOL, MySpace, Yahoo, and Google chat. The great thing is that they also support Voip like Voip gate and Voipbuster and Skype, therefore having 1 app for all my communication needs.

  • Globetrotter

One question I’d like an answer to (and they only one I care about): Can I use this over data outside the US on my Tour (GSM overseas) and with an unlimited BB international plan to make unlimited Skype to landline/mobile using my Skype unlimited world plan? That would be wonderful and would eliminate int’l roaming changes but it seems too good to be true. Now, I use Skype on my iPhone but that’s only wifi, not 3G and iPhone does not have an unlimited global data plan as BB does.
