Apple to be the Android killer? Windows Phone 7 Series the Savior?

Apple Logo-Black + White

Apple’s patent lawsuit against HTC may be much more far reaching than initially thought. According to a report at CNN’s Fortune website, Apple’s lawsuit has Android handset manufacturers shaking in their boots with many hiring legal teams, revising their OS strategies, sending hardware back to engineering, and changing development roadmaps behind closed doors. It all started in early 2009 when Apple COO Tim Cook launched the first attack during an earning conference call by stating “we will not stand for having our IP ripped off and we’ll use whatever weapons we have at our disposal. I don’t know that I can be more clear than that.”  Apple publicly remained passive during much of 2009, sitting idle while Palm launched the Pre and other manufacturers pushed out non-multi-touch smartphones that posed no threat to its iPhone market share. Enter the HTC DROID ERIS, the Nexus One, and the Motorola DROID which recently took the smartphone world by storm with their sleek good looks and potential multi-touch capability. Apple is now on the proverbial warpath with HTC as its first target and other manufacturers fearful that they will be next as Apple reportedly held conversations with “Tier 1″ device manufacturers to inform them of Apple’s intentions. The winner in this fearful frenzy, ironically, may be Microsoft which is reportedly swooping in with its extensive patent library in hand, and promising Windows Phone 7 Series as a safe harbor to companies that are fearful of Apple’s wrath. It all sounds like a daytime soap opera conjured up for the geek world but it is unfortunately and incredibly true.

LOL @ Apple suing for multi-touch. What a joke.

  • cabela

I doubt its a joke. Considering apple gave HTC a year ahead in advance about the consequences. And HTC refused to follow them.

As a current Iphone owner, if Apple does follow through with the legal action, they will lose my business. They don’t want competition because it would be good for consumers.

Never owned any Apple products to start off with cause I never liked they way Apple purposely cripples their own devices to begin with.

  • ROLLAIF

They’ll be sueing apple trees next.

    • Apple Juice

good one, next apple juice. :)

This proves that Apple thinks the other phones are better

I don’t have either an iphone nor an android powered device i’m a blackberry user and i’ve been following this debacle since it first happened (and I’m sure this comment is going to be seriously disliked but oh well) apple being the “android killer” is something stupid to say…what gets people attention about something media and press. people sue each other all the time in the technology world its a common fact…apple going after htc for it’s ridiculous patent law suit is only giving the android powered phone market more press….think about it when you really read all the patents and how apples going about it it just makes other have a sour taste in their mouths for apple. they don’t want competition. competition is a good thing its what drives each company to create bigger badder and better phones for us consumers to oogle and drool over and hope to spend some serious dough on. i just find it ironic that apple is going after htc when theres motorola who is android powered and with the droid made a media circus over android has many of the same features an htc built phone does and shares the same features that apple is suing over. we can’t even forget about the other phone companies like LG and samsung that offer phones (maybe not android phones) but phones that have the multitouch and the swipe gestures that unlock things. for people saying it’s not a joke it really is! apply is afraid of competition just look at each iphone….whats different not a whole hell of a lot other than the color and processor….it’s becoming tired and outdated and with android on the rise we are now getting more offerings for the same platform on different carriers. its funny b/c apple suing htc directly over android is pretty much screwing their right nut at&t for anything that could potentially make them money if they don’t cripple any more android devices like they already have….we need to stop playing tattle tale in kindergarten and grow up into adult hood and say you know fine i’ll show you and make a bigger better badder device and spend more money on r&d than suing each other in the court room….that’s my rant and rave and people who are reading this prolly already have to click the link of serious dislike

Please tell me this won’t really happen. This would be the worst thing for the mobile computing world… The PC story all over again: Apple makes a great product, but ultimately cripples and marginalizes it through isolationist policies… Microsoft the opportunist swoops in to snatch up a monopoly and dominate the market with a mediocre product that becomes “the standard” … true innovation and choice is extinguished. I hope the Android world (and RIM and Palm for that matter) bands together on this one to crush Apple’s arrogance and put them in their place. Forget Microsoft. They only care about themselves and how they can MONOPOLIZE on everyone else’s misfortune.

    • MikeD

      Collusion, yeah thats better.

  • Derek

Good, Android sucks anyways. Hope Apple destroys Google!!!

    • jawman

shut up, you’ve never even used android.

  • g1-and-only

GO ANDROID…..boooooo to you apple, and at@t for making the backflip look so bad compared to your beloved apple junk, in the commercal for the backflip there is no word of it being andriod and 1.5 cant get google map navigation so your forced to use telenav..but please keep hating it makes android look so much better

  • BobH

Apple is evil. Ever since they formed their company. Woz was the only good person to work there….

  • ady

So apple making claims (valid or not) and asking ban on htc products from ITC automatically proves that windows mobile 7, which isn’t even out yet, will be a winner? You do realize that: 1. Nokia has sued Apple for the same reason on much more valid patents already and 2. suing or asking for ban doesn’t automatically makes all the claims valid?

Just a suggestion, maybe your site should stick to products leaks from now on?

  • Special K

Apple is suing out of desperation. They haven’t came out with a new device. Sure the iPhone was great at first, but other companies have taken technology to the next level. Apple cant STAND the fact that there are companies out there with better phones. All i can say is that GO ANDROID!

  • angermeans

    @Nathan,

actually because if you knew anything or did any research google doesn’t make any money off of android (cept in advertising and the N1 that’s a different story) HTC uses android and makes money off of it so that is why they are going after HTC. from what I have read apple has threatened companies last January and now they must protect their intellectual property. Now as for me I hope they don’t win and stifle the competition we are seeing some great phones (ie the nexus one, droid etc) and I want to see much more. I don’t want to be stuck with choosing between apple and microsoft in the mobile world like we pretty much have to now with pcs

There really needs to be a seperation of emotion from all these comments. The reality in these folks statment is so way off.

Just recently Microsoft lost a patent infringement case regards Word. They now have to pay $240 million in damages. That’s the reality folks. And I don’t see anybody here rushing to Microsofts defense.

I’ll say it one more time. Companies have patents amd the can and should defend them. I’d you want to use them, you have to pay or risk being brought to court.

The many Apple haters here don’t really care about innovation. All they care about is innovation come from who they ally with. But I guarantee if their sweet heart company was infringed upon, they’d expect them to issue lawsuits just like Apple.

Hypocrisy is rampant here at BGR comments.

iphones are only good for playing games and dropping calls. Apple is just pissed because some one has come out with a better solution that actually works. luke wilson explained this to me by postcard.

Apple is a great company although they arent much when it comes to big changes they produce great hardware, The Iphone is great, its not apple its AT&T that screws iphone over. I understand defending your patent, but making that kind of tech exclusive is rediculous in the first place. that shows fear of competition the idea that someone could use their idea in a better way then they could… Competition is foundation of the entire sales economy, Its what keeps us consumers happy. Honestly I like the motorola Droid, dont care for the eris. What im looking forward to is the LG android phone. Reliable company great processor and its on a network that can actually support it. apple needs to realize its self destructive law suit and start concentrating on making a new phone one that will actually be able to compete with the android series. Stop crying pick yourself up and get back on the market. Competition is healthy.

    • jayboy

No, it’s Apple. If Apple chooses to stay with one carrier (AT&T) that sux, then it’s all Apple.

  • Jericho

As far as windows seven goes, I want to see the new windows phones, I want to see a windows mobile 7 that works beautifully. Microsoft can do some real magic and anyone can admit that even anti-windows. The thing is will it actually work right will it function or are we looking at a beta form full of bugs. apple has always been the geek on the playground who crys and trys to outwit the others, Windows was always the bully musceling in, and now android is our middle man the everyman. hopefully windows and apple will grow up and join the real world. If they do we can expect to see a massive tech explosion in the coming years. The market will explode with new possabilities… hopefully

steve jobs needs to get job!

  • whoster69

This really says it all. Apple is out of ideas so they go to their lawyers to win since their hardware can’t.

  • David A

Apple is a bunch of homos who hide behind a lawyer everytime someone tries to innovate better than they can. They should just keep peddling there shit to the fanboys and keep quiet.

  • Moe

I was a Nexus One user back in the States. I recently moved to Dubai where I decided to switch to the iPhone after getting some good offers from a retailer called Axiom Telecom. I can clearly see why Apple is hunting Androids. Most Android features were already available on the iPhone since 2007.

  • MikeD

Apple Juice is another valid reason for BGR moderators.

  • Docbinway

Doesn’t Apple have enough money already? Sheesh!!
