Amazon planning to overhaul the Kindle's browser?

kindle-2-review-web-browser

A job posting for a position within Lab126, a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon that focuses on the Kindle, suggests that Amazon may be developing a new web browser for its popular e-reader. In an “it’s about time” maneuver, the job is seeking a Software Development Engineer to work with the web browser team on a project whose goal is to provide an innovative Embedded Web Browser. The current Kindle browser is severely lacking and needs an overhaul if the Kindle is going to compete with the iPad and other tablets slated to hit the market in 2010.
A recent report form ChangeWave Research is foreboding when it suggests that current e-reader owners would have bought an iPad if the iPad was on the market when they made their purchasing decision. Considering the market forces at play, the last line in the job description requiring “someone to deliver high quality work on tight schedules” is quite telling. Despite its calm and cool appearance, Amazon may be feeling a bit under the gun. What do you think?

Maybe they’ll get the iPad done right…

Amazon can do it for they already have a significant stake in the market but if they actually get themselves in gear will be another story. As for Apple, the iPad is just a giant ippd touch with 3g…Apple is a cool name to own on the street that’s the only advantage they have.

Now that Cisco announced their new router capable of downloading every movie ever made in 4 minutes.
The iPAD will blow the kindle out of the water.
I suspect Apple will move ahead with iCHAT the iPAD and iPHONE

I thought the iPad had to compete with the Kindle, and not the other way around.

People are overstating these polls about Kindle vs iPad. Don’t they realize Apple products always generate huge launch buzz? Of course polls right now will show iPad with an advantage. Lets see what the polls are like this fall before making rash judgments.

Are these really in the same market? Sure, they both do books, it’s like a cell phone vs. a smart phone.

The cell phone will make calls and text. The smartphone will make calls, text, surf the web, and will in general be “fancier.” Of course, the smartphone will cost a great deal more than the regular old cell phone.

Are these competing against each other? Will some “dumbphone” users upgrade to a “smartphone” even though they don’t need the excess? Sure. But it seems it’s a different market overall, especially with the price points.

if the iPad is successful, i doubt it would be for reading books. amazon shouldnt be too worried.

It’s funny how some are proclaiming the iPads e-reader dominance before it’s released. Remember Apple-TV…was that the game changer that re-defined TV viewing?

Also, if you surveyed most if they would like a BMW or a Kia…most would say BMW…but realistically most can only afford a Kia.

Being the owner of a Kindle if the ipad was out when I made this purchase I would still buy the Kindle. When looking at e readers I would prefer the one specifically made to be an e reader. I do not want a mini computer to read books. Just something simple and easy to house to save money on book purchases.

I think the ipad will tap in to an entirely different market than that of the kindle. Of course Amazon should be worried aboutt the ipad and should look to update its operating system but I think Kindle will give them some good competition.

Native support for PDF files, color screen, drop price 30% and Kindle will rule.

Considering how long Notion Ink Adam has been in development, I am surprised that Amazon act as if they have never heard of it, and simply acquired it, re-branded as their next generation Kindle DX, created a 6″ version as their next generation Kindle, and launched both at the same time Apple was launching the inferior iPad.

Notion Ink Adam, on many levels is a much superior tablet than iPad and Kindle combined. It does not hurt that the price point for the 10.1″ tablet is hundreds of $$$ less than the iPad – it’s actually less than the Kindle DX even. A six inch version of the same device, could technically be produced and retailed for even less money than that.

Simply by keeping their eye out on the entire mobile tech horizon, Amazon could have trumped Apple at Apples own game, instead of the other way around. They could have beat Apple out on functionality, variety of offering and price. After all, it is not like Amazon did not know almost a year ago that iPad was eventually coming out – or for that matter, that Nook was eventually coming out. And I have not met anyone to date, especially anyone serious about a proper e-reader, whom after seeing the Notion Ink Adam at work, would give iPad even a second glance after doing so – the Notion Ink Adam, is clearly the superior product, not only as an e-reader, but even at all the multimedia and websurfing functions that iPad is supposed to be good at.

It just seems to me, that even though they’ve targeting Kindle at a different market, Amazon got very complacent with their foothold in the tech space, and are seriously going to get shafted for it from all sides, as 2010 matures, because of that complacency. Updating the browser in the existing Kindle, while certainly appreciated by a Kindle owner like myself, in the face of the impending iPad launch next month, really may turn out to be nothing more than too little, too late.

Someone looking for an e-book reader who would choose an iPad over a Kindle/nook/e-reader/etc clearly doesn’t understand the value of the e-book reader. Sadly, these people will set e-book progress back years as they complain about eye strain still being an issue.

You guys defending the Kindle are a little nuts. The Ipad is $150 more and does so much more than the kindle its a joke. If amazon was smart they would get out of the hardware business. Focus on good software for mulitple platforms and call it a day.

  • jonathan

I have a Kindle, and worried that it will start to collect dust when the Ipad goes into full gear. They are right, if the Ipad was in the line-up along with the Kindle, I would never have purchased the Kindle. The Ipad can do so much more and the Kindle no matter how much they redo it still is an ebook reader and the Ipad a multi-media tablet. Amazon would have to come up with a tablet to even compete, but we’ll see what happens.

Black & white browser? Now there’s an idea!

iPad vs Kindle? I want to read in bed, which means a backlight. iPad has that. The kindle doesn’t need to go very far to better more desirable.
