Rumor

symbian-s4-interface

Symbian fans looking forward to the S^4 release can get a sneak peek at the interface for this upcoming OS courtesy of YouTube member mdanofierce. The two b-roll style  S^4 videos appear to be recorded from an emulator and reveal a multiple homescreen, touch-based interface that is peppered with widgets and a full-screen photo album application with a collapsible menu toolbar. The two short and sweet videos are available after the jump for your viewing pleasure. Give them a quick once over during your coffee break and let us know what you think of the future of Symbian in the comments.

  • StevenGlansburg

    Still looks bland and unappealing.

    • bob

looks a helluva lot better to me than butt-ugly-phone7

      • StevenGlansburg

I disagree… Windows Phone 7 looks pretty awesome actually. Have you even seen the video of it yet?

      • http://www.applebythehour.com Jarrett

        @ StevenGlansburg,

You actually used a great word in there “video”. This is the problem with companies showing a “video” of what a product could potentially be versus giving a live demonstration.
When a product is ready, give a demo and then state when you will start selling the product.

Youtube has a video of a gentleman turning on a lightbulb. He uses roughly 100 steps that take about a minute to complete the action. I wanted to see if I could do it faster. I walked over to the light switch…… stuck out my hand….flipped the swith up…… viola! Really it took about a second. With me finding the quicker path to turn on the light, it left me with time to do other things.

Yes I rambled……… Microsoft needs to just give the products already. I don’t need to hear about what you are prototyping, or when a beta will be available. Just finish the product, give me a “live” demo and let me decide if it is something I am going to buy or not. Quit trying to hold my dollars ransom with vaporware.

      • Celz

They did have a live demo.. that was the same day it was announced remember.. Im actually going to stop replying because its apparent you dont know what your talking about…

Okay, I am confused. Which operating system is Nokia going to use?

Also, the fact that I had to lay down to watch this video was depressing.

    • Sugar Grove

      Jarrett,
I had the Nokia 9500 communicator way back when and Tmobile wasnt so thrilled when they heard about me dropping in sim card.
Too much money back then but the novelty was fun.
I think that used the symbian o/s too

      • Sugar Grove

oops.. it was the 9290 cheaper earlier model. it was the 9500 I was considering

  • murble

Symbian will be used for low to mid range handsets.
Meego will be used for the top tier multimedia powerhouses.

The new dev tools will make it easier for designers to make apps that run on both OS’s.

  • savvyray

The font still looks horrible. How bout spicing up the battery and 3g signal indicator? Its about as plain as it can get.

  • Nader Odeh

As a huge fan of Nokia, I must say that this is ugly. I thought it was a joke at first.

  • lordDumbledore the 3rd

    @Nader Odeh,

you’re an idiot, don’t you know that VZW carried the Nokia N95, and was the first carrier to have it, even before Sprint? you’re so stupid, Nader, you sound like you work for Deutsche Telekom or something.

You’re a fucking moron. The N95 was never released on any CDMA carrier. Quit talking shit like you know something about phones. You’re fucking stupid.

  • canismajor

What’s with the “back” key at the top right? Sure makes it uncomfortable to use.

  • Nader Odeh

    @lordDumbledore the 3rd,

Bro, what the fuck are you talking about? You, my friend, apparently work for “Douche” Telekom.

    @Joe,

I’m the moron? I was one of the first to get the N95 straight from Nokia’s headquarters in Germany, when my dad was stationed there for the Navy and I’ve been using it on Big Red here in Montana ever since. Dude, before you berate or criticize, you should get your facts straight. google is your friend….bitch.

    • Joe

You’ve been using it on Big Red huh? Is that why all your posts say “Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone)”

    • Joe

or do you use the iPhone on Verizon too? Moron.

      PAAHAHAHAHAAHAA!!!!!

  • NJL

Boring interface. A complete rip-off of everything out there. Nothing original here. Nokia might as well just curl up and die a slow death. They were quick to dismiss the iPhone when it came out, and now they are scrambling to save themselves with a pale, PALE and lame imitation 3 years too late.

    • Joe

Maemo showed glimpses of greatness and I still believe the N900 offers the best internet experience on a phone, but they don’t have much going for them right now…

  • lordDumbledore

    @Joe,

I’d like to offer a truce, but don’t act like you’ll ever understand Montana.

      Meh,

This is the new DirectUI, implemented in qt. It’s the implementation, not the product, that is being shown off here.

The roadmap, which the SF has done a pretty good job of following, says that it will be ready to go in phones in Q4 this year so there is still a way to go before it’s ready for prime time.

It should be interesting. These videos aren’t, and they’re not really supposed to be. This is just a ‘hello world’ demonstration of an open source Qt interface.

What I did find interesting is the N97 frame on the emulator…. That would make a lot of people happy.

    • Joe

Truce accepted. I will never understand anything about Montana and the iPhone that runs on Verizon there. Also, I have no idea what it’s like to use an HP MacBook either. Can you share that experience with us?

  • maxpayne79

    looks boring and old school.
whatever happened to Symbian? its a damn shame. I used to own the e60 and e70 going back now 5 years (way before the iphone and a decent blackberry), and they were the best phones. Wifi, internet (on edge), full blackberry push email support, great camera, internet radio all on an unlimited data and voice plan from fido. Good old times. Honestly no much has changed in the cell phone industry since then now that i think about it. Just more of the same thing. Now i understand why Nokia is suing Apple. If i’d be putting out OSs like this, i would too. Anyway…Canada vs Slovakia tonight. Who care about phones…my old hood’s playing against my new hood, haha. Slovakia to the fullest!!! :)

It looks alright but doesn’t compare to my iPhone …that is for sure..

    Looks like Windows to me.

Time to forget about Nokia Symbian OS?
Time to think of Motorola Android OS?

    Nokia is failing!

    Bye Bye Nokia!

  • neeka

S^3’s UI is quite up to date, with the latest pinch-to-zoom features, swiping, scrolling, flicking and picking, you can perform all the fliptastic finger tricks you would expect to on a multi-touch Apple or Android device.

Although I believe this video isn’t impressive at all.

  • boomKABOOM

Looks so dull, the icons look like a cartoon gone wrong.

I miss the old Symbian OS 9.2, if it was to that standard…

  • Ruperto

Looks like a dumb down version of Android.
