Details on RIM's new BlackBerry slider?

Breaking

rim-storm-slider-l

This isn’t confirmed, but with RIM rumored to be exploring sliding-QWERTY devices for a pretty long time, one of our BlackBerry connects dropped some info on us and we wanted it to share it. Here’s what we know:

  • It’s a portrait-oriented slider. While most people assume a device with slideout keyboard would end up being something like HTC’s devices, we’ve been told this particular handset is more like the Palm Pre in terms of layout.
  • The phone will run BlackBerry OS 6.0
  • The rumored device will 100% support Wi-Fi 802.11n
  • The resolution unfortunately has not improved, it is still 360×480.
  • No word on if this will have a touch screen, but we’d assume so, and our source alluded to this possibly being what the rumored BlackBerry Magnum/Dakota evolved into. Not saying there won’t be a Bold-like device with touchscreen, optical trackpad, and physical keyboard, but this might be released first.
  • If it does have a touch screen, this could in fact be the mythical BlackBerry Storm slider — picture a Storm 9520 with a slide up Bold-esque keyboard.
  • The phone will not be a Verizon exclusive — it’s supposed to be a GSM/HSPA device.

That’s all we’ve got for now, folks. What are you thinking? Does this remotely interest you, or could you care less about the hardware at this point and just hope that RIM can make some pretty big strides as far as their OS is concerned?

    Slider in portrait mode? Dumb.

I’d buy one if it was landscape. Not going near it otherwise.

Not interested…The length of the thing is going to be like a top heavy candy bar. Even if it they do make this device with their great keyboard sliding out the bottom, it wouldn’t be balanced when typing. It would be wobbly and feel flimsy with more weight behind the screen. I agree that Landscape is the preferrable method with that size screen – which btw at least make it 800×480, come on… (for rumored specs)

agreed. this just looks dumb for one and for 2 it would never be functional. side slide is the only way to go on this. and can we please have a 5 megapixel camera and a better browser? pretty please??? geez….

  • mikeeeee

if it has t-mo 3g and UMA i’m so there.

i’ll even buy one for my wife.

like to have it for winter 2010 when my contracts mature.

      I agree; me too

      agree it.

Fewer and fewer people care about BB anymore. Its old. Its stale. It never changes. There are too many cool devices coming out with wow factors than to care about another BB in a different shell. Android is fun, easy, and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon. WM7 looks promising too from what the leaks are showing. Time will tell.

Oh hey Palm of 2008 when did you get here?

  • Joey

Who cares? Blackberry is DEADER than DEAD!

OS 6.0… so will THIS be the OS we’ve been waiting for? Good web browser? Install apps to memory card? Modern? One can’t help but hope, but don’t hold your breath. I’m sure it will be an improvement, but will it be enough? And how many bugs will accompany the emergence of another new form factor (think Storm… Pearl Flip)???

This looks a tad shoopy, anyway, so I doubt this is actually happening. It is an atrocious idea. Landscape slider is the way to go.

BlackBerry needs to work on their OS, it is stuck in 2006.

  • Chuck P

Landscape slider would be my choice too. Looks too long, plus landscape would provide a much larger QWERTY keyboard.

    uh-oh!

  • smarzig

    I would get one for sure. I this this is a G R E A T idea!
Lets do it then we wont have have 10 different models!

I could care less about this BS. RIM burned me with the storm and I’ll never buy a product from them again. I have to reboot the thing every day with its memory leaks and the headphones don’t work (it always stays on speaker phone). Don’t support companies that put out shoddy products!

How can a device which is rumoured support anything 100%????

    Quout from article:
“The rumored device will 100% support Wi-Fi 802.11n”

DUDE!!!!!! SliderBerry PLEEZ come to AT&T!!!! I VANT to hold you…..

  • Ted Thrash

Interested, if it has touch screen, you won’t need physical key board that often, but i like the portrait keyboard as it allows for one handed operation

  • http://www.edelmans.com Eric Edelman

If this is true, it is what I’ve been waiting for! I don’t care if it is top heavy. A Blackberry with a big touch screen and a real keyboard. I’m in heaven!

  • Blade

I like it. I mean they literally read my mind on the design. A regular sized touchscreen with a slide down keyboard. This still will allow me to text with one hand if I so choose. I don’t really like the landscape keyboards for that reason alone. If they kept the battery life the same as my Curve, I’d be in heaven. Everything else I’m good with. I’m more into the functionality of the device rather than the 1 million apps it can run. Functional and fast and PLEASE speed up the reboot time if the OS crashes a lot (a la Palm 700WX).
