Canada's Big Three readying cross-carrier video calling

Although cross-carrier video calling is likely to rank very low on the wireless wish list of Canadians, don’t try telling that to the Big Three who have just completed the testing phase of the service. Intra-network video calling, which has been available in Canada since April 2007 with Rogers and became available with Bell and TELUS in November 2009 alongside their spiffy new HSPA+ network, has yet to strike a chord with Canadian consumers (we’d wager most don’t even know it’s available), but Bell, Rogers and TELUS have high hopes that it will be openly embraced by the public. Said Bell’s Stephen Howe: “By breaking down the barriers between video calling clients in Canada, we anticipate strong demand for the service — as we saw with past inter-carrier initiatives such as text and picture messaging.” So far no launch dates are floating around, but we can’t imagine it will stay secret forever. Is anyone excited by this news, or are you all still trying to think of the last time you used your phone to call someone? Plus, you know what this service would really come in handy for?

Another service nobody in Canada will use because we already pay an arm and a leg for the most basic of services as it is. Woopie.

Two words why nobody will want this: double-chin.

LOL – you gotta look up, not down… ;)

Fix the damn cross-carrier SMS problem first! Rogers always have issue texting Telus customers.

    • T

Real T sure isn’t from Canada. So he has no official comment on Canada’s ability to do anything.

After reading some posts, I am SOOO glad I am an American.. BTW… Go team USA!

    • Soooooo happy you are to

What kind of stupid comment is that?

Does make it easy to spot the idiots when they put their hands up though.

    • mi_canuck

you are the reason Americans are hated the world over…. good job… keep it up…. loser

  • Chris

I’m soooo glad I’m not American. Except for half decent wireless pricing. The big 3 won’t be happy until our bills are $300 a month.

  • Don

On the bright side, Canada is a good test bed for all these new devices coming to market. Right Google and Palm and everyone else.

  • Deaf

As a deaf American, I envy my fellow Canadians for they can now call and converse in sign language with their families, friends, and coworkers. Thanks Canada for breaking down barriers and keep it up!

    • Don

I don’t even know if phones exist with front-facing cameras.

    • Dara

      Deaf,

If you want this right now, you’ll need the following:

Symbian phone(I think they all have front facing cams)
      Fring app
      Skype account
      Data plan

Fring will do two way Skype video calling with online presence. So you can make free video calls to anyone with a webcam and they can also call you.

      • Deaf

I got an AT&T iPhone 3GS. I do have Fring app and Skype account. I am HOPING that the next iPhone will have a front facing cam. I’ve never touched a Symbian phone – that is something I’ll have to check out. Thanks!

This is the beauty of having MULTIPLE carriers all on the same technology (all 3 on HSDPA/HSPA now)…. AND all on the same frequency…. Here in the US – we get fucked up the ass by all the fragmentation and carrier differences…. the lone 2 GSM/HSDPA carriers aren’t even on the same 3G band… (and CDMA is not part of my vocabulary…. non SIM phones don’t exist to me :-p

The US is still so far behind in wireless… they’ll just NEVER get it…. the carriers run the show, and that’s the fucking problem….

  • Dara

    It goes like this:

Implement it as a plan option for $10-15 for about an hour of video calling per month.

Set the cross carrier overage at $1 /min (voice overage on Rogers is .35 so it’s not unrealistic)

Wait for people to answer video calls outside of their plan.

    Pillage…. I mean Profit.

The big three each have video call ready phones already deployed, I think I even have a video call credit on my plan (and a front facing camera to use it) but nobody I know is willing to chance the inevitable hit for out of plan video calls.

Plus you have to hold your phone above your head to not look like Jabba the Hut.

  • Numbers don’t

It’s pretty obvious the big 3 are getting for a front faced iPhone camera

      ding ding ding

That is exactly what I was thinking.

Useless waste of money, no one will video call, because a very small number of phones have front facing cameras, and besides why would I was to see the person I am talking while I am on my cellphone? Video calling on a LAN-line makes sense in the business world, but even now its widely available, yet never used.

Why don’t the big 3 put their resources into lowering rates, instead of useless features no one wants. The people want cheap rates, I mean $40 for 100 mins and 500 mb of data are you kidding me!

This is along the lines of TELUS Navigator, a pay to use navigation app that requires a smart phone, but I guess no one told TELUS there are nav apps widely available that don’t have a monthly fee.

  • Nick

    Who cares this is useless!

  • Thane.D

The three amigos are trying to distract the Canadian consumer with BS marketing/advertising campaigns to justify their ridiculously inflated pricing for mobile services.

    • Mike

      Bingo!

  • NSN

The only thing ppl want video calling for is to see their partner get naked in real-time.
