Rogers clears up US data roaming with new One Rate plans

We know the boo birds are going to have a lot of fun with this, but today Rogers officially introduced North American One Rate data roaming plans. In exchange for an extra $10 per month, Rogers subs will be able to get their data freak on south of the 49th without having to pay a penny for per Kb data roaming. Instead, the used data deducted directly from their normal monthly data bucket. Here are the plans:

  • $20 Personal Email on BB CDN/US
  • $35 Consumer/Small business BB (BIS) 500MB CDN/US Plan
  • $35 Consumer/Small business 500MB CDN & US Data Plan
  • $40 Consumer/Small business BB (BIS) 1GB CDN & US Plan
  • $40 Consumer/Small business 1GB CDN & US Data Plan
  • $45 500MB CDN & US Mobile Internet Flex Rate Plan
  • $50 DAP (for MSD customers) 1.5GB CDN & US Data Plan
  • $55 Corporate BB (BES) 1GB CDN & US Plan
  • $55 Corporate BB (BES) 500 MB CDN & US Flex Rate Plan

We don’t think the One Rate roaming plans will “shatter people’s perception of wireless data roaming when visiting the United States” as Rogers has stated, but we also think it’s hard to argue against the transparency of the new plans. Now to do something about voice and SMS…

Fun fact: There’s nothing that says you can’t switch to this plan as you’re boarding your flight to NYC and then removing it as soon as you’re back on Canadian soil.

    This is good news.

    With a voip app, you can now get around their roaming fees when you cross the border, just like when you stay in the country.

    FYI: Rogers charges 35c/minute for roaming anywhere outside of your home area code so we Canadians already have to use a voip workaround to avoid being screwed for doing something as insanely costly as using our phones an hour away from where our bill gets sent.

    It piles on too, my most expensive call anywhere in the world was calling home to say I’d be there in an hour. 35c/minute roaming, 35c/min overage, 35c/min long distance.

      Can you recommend a good VoIP app for a fellow canuck?

      Thanks!

    Everyone is reporting on this incorrectly. It’s $10 month to reduce your per MB rate to $1.

    There is nothing on their site to say anything else. Just Rogers trying to spin this as good.

    WOW! Looks like the Canadians are finally creeping up in matching what US carriers have. For example, I’m on verizon and have UNLIMITED international data on my Crackberry–not even a 5gb cap. Plus, I’m on the Nationwide Plus Canada calling plan: no roaming or LD in either country at $80/month with 900 anytime minutes and 1000 offpeak/weekend minutes. That’s awesome and is one of the main reasons I stay with VZW.

    “There’s nothing that says you can’t switch to this plan as you’re boarding your flight to NYC and then removing it as soon as you’re back on Canadian soil.”

    They’ve had a $10 single month add on for a while. I’ve used it several times when I am going to be in the states for a while.

    You’re wrong. This is new. Do you think Rogers is capable of properly updating their website?

    Correct, but with that plan you must pay per MB in addition to $10.

    To Dara’s comment if you are in Canada and outside of your home calling zone you would only pay 35 cents a minute for the long distance plus overage rates. You will not pay roaming and long distance. Roaming is Considered long distance. They are one and the same. Not 35 x 3.

    I have the 6 Gb plan… Strangely enough that one does not seem to be included in this new look on roaming….

    @Mike
    These are new plans that were just announced recently. Now, along with the regular Data plans, there are the new Canada/USA Data plans that allow you to use your monthly Data bucket in Canada, the US or both. And it only costs $10 more than the normal Data plans. Check rogers.com if you don’t believe.

    @Dara
    Rogers charges Long Distance when in Canada and you are out of your Local Calling Area. You do not pay Roaming.
    The definition of ROAMING is to use another Carriers Network. If you went to the US with a Rogers phone (2G), you would Roam on either AT&T or T-Mobile.
    But there is no Roaming in Canada, except in Northern Ontario and way up north. We just pay Rogers Long Distance when out of our LCA.
