Motorola Backflip will be AT&T's first Android device, coming March 7

General

motorola-backflip-1

As of March 7th, AT&T is officially in the Android game, as Ma’ Bell made the Motorola Backflip official today in a press release. A quick recap of the Backflip: 7.2 HSPA 3G, 3.1″ touch-screen display, Android OS 1.5 (upgradeable to 2.1), 5 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, aGPS, 3.5 mm headphone jack, microSD slot (support for up to 32GB), fully QWERTY “back flipping” keyboard, and Motorola’s MOTOBLUR UI. The Backflip will retail for $99.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and a 2-year contract. The Backflip definitely isn’t the most high-powered Android handset on the market, and not one that is likely to make DROID or Nexus One owners jealous. However, the Backflip is the first of four Android handsets AT&T committed to deliver in 2010, and to that we say keep em’ coming! We’ve got the official press release queued up for you.

Like it or not, at least it’s DIFFERENT.

So many phones coming out now are just like all of the others out there.

      Propel vs Reveal

  • haha

    oops, double post

The backflip is clearly Moto’s way of saying “We want a larger presence…but we don’t wanna even attempt to upset THE DROID!”

Come on….1.5 off top? No memory card in that slot? 3.1 inch screen??? It’ll fit the lifestyle for some people for sure….but when you’re being forced to pay 29 dollars for a data plan…you might want more than “average”

    RIGHT?

  • Bbold9700

Alright its time for droid of the month.

  • VERZION.

This phone is made for tweens.who cant get an iphone.

  • Tepper

Not a fan of the design.. At first I was thinking how easy it would be to muck up an outward facing keyboard in your pocket, but I suppose as long as the keyboard is durable, it should last as long as a standard candybar style phone (with REAL buttons) of days past.

I have been rethinking my hate for this little thing. I dont like the design…really dont like the design…but then I didnt like clamshell phones for a while either. If the keys dont get gummed up and stay legible…and the thing does not break in half like a fortune cookie…then it might not be that bad.

Is it me or did i see SEVERAL google android apps missing in that video?

  • mi_canuck

    3.1″ screen and a stupid design… fitting it go to AT&T… :p

    • Smart Guy

As a rep for Verizon, and a previously for AT&T, I would still say that AT&T doesn’t necessarily have the best devices, but it does have a lot of good ones that are CONSTANTLY brought up by customers that come into my store.

Also, the GSM technology is a lot nicer than CDMA. If you break your verizon phone you’re almost S.O.L. but if you break a T-Mobile or AT&T phone at least you can move the SIM card.

I just don’t get why people dis on AT&T so much, I actually liked selling their devices a lot better because if you didn’t like the darn thing after signing an agreement you could take it back and put the SIM card in your old phone right away… with Sprint of Verizon it takes a little more time.

All in all, NOT A FAN of the Backflip, nor the iPhone. The two best phones I have played with recently would be the Nexus One, and the Blackberry 9700, neither of which Verizon or Sprint have.

No offense mi_canuck, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and everyone has different wants/needs in a cellular device.

I can’t help but wonder how much shit is going to enter the keyboard, and how the keys will look after 6 months…

I think its funny this is the only phone getting crap for having an exposed screen/KB. What makes the exposed KB on this any different than that of a blackberry, nokia e71, or any other phone. The design does feel a bit gimmicky to me, but I havent used or seen one in person so I cant comment on the functionality of the device.

I waited and waited for AT&T to offer a decent Android phone and now they come up with a ToyPhone. SOrry but I have to switch and get the Droid now.

    What a waste of time.

this website has some of the biggest phone snobs ever. holy crap! toyphone?! Really? ugh… now i miss when comments were off. haha

you guys are probably the same guys who say they wouldnt have sex with megan fox cause of her f’in thumb. haha

    • Smart Guy

Hell no… big thumb or not, Megan Fox is a catch. I honestly think any guy would hit that if they could. Sorry for the language, but honestly… if a guy/girl(in some situations) came home and Megan Fox was sitting there in the nude… don’t even tell me one wouldn’t.

we forgot the law has passed, each phone in the world to get BGR fans on top of it has to have >3.1 screen, and 1ghz processor.

if they had released ANYTHING, you would find somethign super wrong with it. most of you will never even play around with the thing, so quick to judge.

  • http://(null) Dallas

I want this phone imma get all 5 of the phones AT

  • selena

One of the things that interests us MOST is that physical QWERTY keyboard on the back. When the keyboard is open a touchpad on the back of the phone is revealed which allows you to easily scroll through webpages and apparently it works very well slightly thinner, slightly shorter both length and width, and lighter than the G1. • BESTY

Backflip design is unique and won Number 1 Design Award in CNET.

These days phone are look alike.

Like what Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia are using Razr, Aura and Droid phone design and claim to be their own made design.

Motorola lose their position was the past.
    Now they are back.

this phone will be a big seller for att like it or not. $99, moto blur service, and att reps will get alot of training for it. plus both att and motorola will put alot of marketing behind it.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • Tim

I hear alot of people bashing moto for this phone. It is old by this years standards, and may have just been a protype that was scratched or made for another market, thus the me600 for china. Moto does not tell the carriers what to buy, the carries tell moto what they will buy. Att is the one who ordered 400.000 of them with an agreement that Att could have their apps and bloatware all over it. dont blame moto for turning down mega millions of dollars from Att, blame Att for asking and buying it in the first place.

What a crap phone for AT&T’s first Android device. It shows they are still bending over backwards to kiss Apple’s ass. I feel sorry for Android wannabees that are stuck on AT&T…cough…Shel…cough.

    • Smart Guy

Dell is giving AT&T their android phone, honest opinion… what do you think that will do?

I’m not totally sure… but Dell’s financials are getting better along with their products.

I would never have bought a Dell… especially during the “Dude, you’re gettin a Dell!” advertising campaign, but after having no luck with HP (I realize that the HP Glisten is in AT&T’s inventory) I picked one up because of the price and what they have to offer and I’m thoroughly impressed.

whoster69: I’m just wondering what you think Dell would bring to AT&T, I know they’re no Apple, but honestly, as a previous AT&T Sales Rep, the iPhone did us no good. Even if you got the damn thing in our store, and before you left something glitched out on it, you’d HAVE TO go to the nearest Apple store to get it fixed, Apple is the one that’s making AT&T what it’s really not. Horrible. Before the iPhone hit AT&T, it had amazing service, thus why I worked for them (AT&T/Cingular really)

It does come with a free 2Gb memory card. The hinge feels pretty strong, and if there is an issue, they will replace it. They are not going to launch a phone and not back it up if something goes wrong. Some people need to chill out and worry about more important things than a phone they are not going to buy anyway.
