Live photos and specifications of the Samsung S8500 Wave emerge

Samsung-s8500-Wave-bada

Yesterday we saw the Samsung Wave from afar, today we get our first up close look at Samsung’s first Bada-powered handset. The Wave is indeed the S8500, the first handset to receive Bluetooth SIG certification for the new Bluetooth 3.0 standard. Ironically, Bluetooth was left out of the list of leaked specs but we will presume that Bluetooth 2.0 and possibly 3.0 is on board. Besides Bluetooth, the Wave will offer a 3.3 inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display, five megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, 720p video, DivX support, 2GB internal memory with microSD expansion, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi, 1 GHz processor, 3.5mm headphone jack, aluminum body, 1500 mAh battery, and the Bada OS with Touchwiz 3.0. The Wave has the typical appearance of a Samsung phone with two flush front buttons, a triangular four way navigational button, triangular camera and flash, and brushed metal accents. Other than the performance of the Bada OS, which will have to wait until the first hands-on video is released, all that is left to find out about this handset is its launch date and geographic availability, a not so trivial fact we hope is announced when Samsung officially unveils this handset next week at MWC.

It looks neat, don’t get me wrong, but I’m looking forward to some more android goodness. Or possibly the 4g iPhone on Verizon’s network.

    • Jon R

upped your comment because i completely agree here, except for the part about seeing a 4g iphone on vzw, anytime soon at least…

  • SneakerFiend

That phone looks beautiful. Makes me wanna buy it.

1Ghz processor, 2GB internal memory, Amoled capacitive, 5MP and 720p vid with divx support.

I love those specs, I just would like to know how much RAM it has

I’m a Win Mo fanboy though

What is this OS, and how does the onscreen keyboard work should be the first on touch screen only

  • Rang3r

No iPhone 4G in verizon dumbass. It will stay on AT&T n you’re gonna fuckin like it!

  • Blackberry Bold

I doubt Verizon iphone will happen this year or next year.
Anyway, I will be interested to see other GSM carriers to carry this phone in the US. Both AT&T and Verizon have to update their samsung devices soon, and most likely they will carry different versions of their own samsung devices. I am very interested to see how Super AMOLED will look like.

Apple is going to need Verizon (and maybe Sprint) contract this year, otherwise their Iphone sales will be flat or decrease and the investors not likey. No 4G (LTE) though, it’s gonna be 3GT, CDMA on Verizon.

  • Where’s LaToya’s pussy

Great looking phone. IMO this beat the looks of every other phone right now.

      Get a life.

Are you talking to yourself? No?

It will be interesting to see how developers react to a brand new OS, besides their tentative gaming partners, we all know what happened with the newest mobile OS (Palm) when it came out, got no gaymes.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Are developers really interested in five seperate developer communities?

    • Travis

Palm now has some of the best 3D games on the market in the Pre’s App Catalog and is well ahead of Android in this area and second only to the iPhone.

What this example shows is that if the SDK is mature enough, and makes it relatively easy to port from other platforms (as is the case with Palm’s PDK and iPhone ports), then software will follow.

So, in conclusion, you shouldn’t try to use a success story as evidence that something isn’t going to work out.

touchwiz……. all i need to say.

  • damiaking

i was reading down and all the spect looked good until i saw touchwiz 3.0 that just killed it samsung!

  • Biggles

You lost me at “3.3 inch”. I stopped reading after that. Also, is that bottom edge picture showing me a 3/4″ thick phone? Umm, NO THANKS.

  • brent hudnall

not jon R but Jon and sam your both deffinitly wrong apple hates verizon ccorp theres no way there putting there iphone on that network they want there phone on a network that has service basically anywhere and unfortunatley verizon thinks there service is to good for rural areas where att and sprint both have service in places verizon dreams of having serviccce that 5 times the 3g coverage dont mean crap if you dont get service at all

    • carig

At&t fanboys are pretty rare. The truth is that Apple wanted to put the iPhone on Verizon but Verizon wouldn’t let them (kind-of a dumb move on Verizon’s part but then again look what the iPhone has done for At&t’s image).

Also, in my anecdotal experience of living in Colorado and traveling in the mountains all the time, Verizon has far better coverage in rural areas.

  • brent hudnall

verizon works great in big cities but West virginia is a mainline statew in are country top 3 supplier in coal and electricity to the whole east cost as well as oil for the whole nation its pretty important at least sprint and att see it important to have service in this area

  • brent hudnall

but anyways this phone has some killer specs though its not classified as a smartphone but still i wonder if it will have wifi and i hope when its brought to the states through att spring Verizon or T-mobile are fcc dont ruin it or the carriers change it for there liking

the iPhone on verizon I really doubt it will happened and I am sure AT

  • Mrwirez

    Sharp looking phone. Nice specs.

  • Wesley

Samsung usually make their phones out of plastic, so it they use metal in this phone, it is a step in the right direction.

  • Peter Cuevas

This phone looks so sweet, aluminum body?…yes…1GZ cpu?…yes…3.3 AMOLED display?…yes…I would like to try it out, Samsung’s touch screen don’t always convince me…

  • Rob

This phone truly does keep the envelope of handset expectations expanding. Way to go Samsung. But I think the most amazing achievement is the four way triangle. ….”a triangular four way navigational button”….WHAT???????

  • carig

The hardware looks pretty amazing, but these days the OS is just as important as the hardware if not moreso. Unfortunately I’m less than optimistic about bada with touchflow but I’ll definitely be checking it out because a good OS running on this phone would be sweet.

And hey, bada is linux based right? Maybe if it turns out to suck someone can figure out how to port Android over to the phone.

  • Bryan

Really- it’s a nice looking phone, hardware also. If only it had Android.

  • Jay

    wow, me likey

  • bizguy

Nice phone. But, the new Bad-uh OS would have to be incredible and revolutionary to win my purchase.

  • lex

Samsung devices are awesome especially for the multimedia functionality. After having the omnia and fiddling with the omnia 2 I left Samsung for HTC. Although I took a downgrade with the Eris by HTC, I just can’t stand Samsung’s silly UI. Touchwiz needs to vastly improve before I consider another one. I do hope 3rd time round is the charm for touchwiz…

  • Channan

I’d drool, if only this thing was running Android.

  • http://adidassoccerjerseys.com/ Red Bull of Soccer

I second Channans opinion. Thats a hot cellie

  • Jeeverz

    /Cool story bro

You sir have too much time on your hands. You keep talking about dignity and professionalism but act with none yourself, and honestly why do you care that much? This is a guys tech blog and I expect BG and the rest of the people that participate on the blog to voice their opinions and do not expect any degree of professionalism from their posts, and I like it that they do not moderate the comments on the blog and allow it to be an open forum for all Spam or no Spam. If I were reading PC World or something like CNBC I would expect a degree of professionalism, but not on a tech blog. So in short get over it.
