Google adds requested privacy features to Buzz

News

Google Buzz Logo

Just two days after the initial launch, Google, based upon feedback from users, is adding several requested features to their new social media platform Google Buzz. The changes, to be implemented later today, include:

  • More visible option to not show followers/people you follow on your public profile
  • Ability to block anyone who starts following you
  • More clarity on which of your followers/people you follow can appear on your public profile

As you can see, most of the improvements revolve around privacy settings; giving greater control over how and to whom your personal information is shared — a concern/criticism that was quickly recognized by blogs and users alike. Buzz, as it currently exists, looks to be Google’s answer to Twitter, with a heavy emphasis on location awareness and your Gmail address book. We’re curious as to what your thoughts are on Buzz. Are you using it? Do you like it? Give us your musings in the comments.

I find the title of this post misleading. Google has not yet made Buzz an opt-in service. As long as users have to manually opt out, the privacy issues remain extremely serious.

Google shouldn’t be offering privacy options; it should be offering publicity options, which by default are turned OFF.

I think it may be time for me to ditch Gmail. I’ll miss it greatly.

Really? I had to “Opt In” when it came into my account. A big screen came up explaining what it was and asked me if I would like to turn it on. I said yes, made the changes to my account I felt were warranted and started enjoying the new features.

Nothing was ever forced on me, everything it did, I told it to do.

Thanks for bringing those to our attention. All of those comments have been deleted. We’ll work harder on manual moderation from now on.

Additionally, the rating system is in place so that if there’s a comment people in general dislike, it will be hidden from view and will require a manual action in order to see it. That helps the community in general moderate and promote the good comments and viewpoints while pushing down the noise.

I don’t understand what you’re trying to say? That we have Filipino spammers posting links to an unknown blog (no affiliation with BGR or any of its writers), and we not only allow this to happen, but actually control it?

The moon landing wasn’t faked, dude.

Andrew didn’t see my response and posted a comment. I wanted to address this myself and clear up any sort of misunderstanding, so yes, I deleted his comment and left mine. But here we go!

    my response would be:

    1. That is a matter of opinion. Yay free speech!
    2. We don’t. Even the ones we should, we don’t.
    3. Um, no.

    Happy?

You talk about monikers yet from your comments, it looks like you’re not even using a real email address to comment from. If you see comments that you think are spam comments or ones that don’t add to the conversation, I implore you to email me, or anyone on the team, and we’ll properly handle them (delete, block, ban).

That’s how WordPress works. Plain and simple. Anyway, that’s all I’ll say about this since your messages are now turning into what you tried to point out in the first place.

How about those unlock codes BG?

Comments that are disliked and linked closed, cannot be opened on Android. The up or down rating system does not work on my Droid either… I’ll bet if I fired up my old iPhone 3G it would…

I’m not sure anyone here is making you read anything on this website. What point are you trying to prove behind a fake e-mail and no obligation to own up to any of your claims? Go away loser! Find a website you do like and leave your crap comments in their page. You’re not discussing the subject in the article and you’re wasting all of the people who actually want to know what other people think about the article’s time as well as BGR’s. They should not have to teach a moron how to use a website when they clearly have no idea why you are supposed to comment. You’re as bad as the internet poison you are pointing out!

  • Gabriel

This guy must have two accounts because every one of his posts are ranked +1 seconds after he posts them, until I vote them down that is.

But hey, if you have no friends and no support, make up friends and fake support. It’s a free country, your free to be as insane as you want, I’m just glad you share it here so we can all point and laugh.

…Is it just me, or does it seem a lot like backbeat has made his triumphant return?

  • ~phel

I’m actually concerned about issues that affect my life in a relevent way, so someone such as yourself spamming a blog site I enjoy doesn’t bother myself as much as it does you apparently….Curious though, as miguel, or be it his imposters threads were taken down you showed up hardcoretruth..

  • TedP

damn dude take some Lithium and quit using Google Translate. Your shit is making my head hurt.

  • Misterbuckalew

Mob-mentality eh? You didn’t even deserve this much of response. Grow up and cry elsewhere! NO ONE is forcing you to be here. Avoid my point and call me a mob all you want but you’re still here! You have this wonderful freedom of choice! USE IT!

  • yaya

why did you lie to him boy genius?

  • la verdad

I, for one, can only say… thanks! I’ll leave good ’nuff alone!

  • la verdad
