T-Mobile myTouch 3G relaunched, now called myTouch 3G

General

mytouch3g

Yeah, T-Mobile didn’t exactly get sexy with naming the myTouch 3G refresh, but hey, with a name so horrible from the beginning, we guess we can’t ask for much. While the name stays the same, the refreshed myTouch 3G definitely brings the slowly-aging device up a notch or two. Here’s a recap of the specifications for the new model:

  • 3.5mm headset jack and updated music player
  • More memory, with 288MB of RAM and an included 8GB microSD card
  • Swype soft keyboard
  • Preloaded applications including Barcode Scanner, Music Player, myAccount and Visual Voicemail

The new device is available starting today in T-Mobile locations as well as telesales for $149.99 with a new two year activation, and comes in both white and black color options. Merlot never had a chance.

what OS version? the updates are kind of what this device should have had in the first place

Hard to justify this when the Nexus One is just 30 dollars more on contract, but they’ll probably get a lot of retail sales, where the Nexus doesn’t compete. If the Nexus One was sitting next to the myTouch in a store, though, I can’t imagine many people would opt for it.

Consumers are mostly unaware when it comes to features. Figure in the amount of women who go in to a store for style, and men just wanting to be “cool” for the women. Hell, Microsoft still sells Windows because consumers are ignorant to the fact that there are several variety’s of Linux on the market and that is without even mentioning Mac OS X.
Leave it to consumers and technology will never become ubiquitous.

“If I worried about what my customers wanted we would all be riding faster horses.” Henry Ford.

If you want your business to fail, worry about giving your customers what they want. If you want your business to succeed, give you customers what they don’t even realize they need.

What would the average consumer do with Linux other than stare at the box and try not to laugh?

Read the post again carefully, you got my point by asking a question. The Nexus one wouldn’t sell more than the MyTouch because the average consumer wouldn’t know any different.
“They both run Android? And this one is cheaper? I will take this one.”

Is it me, or does it look like its endorsed by Jack White?

  • Greg Boccieri

The first thing I saw was Jack – White and I thought it was a white stripes version (like fender). Samsonite, I was way off!

  • mikee

Don’t like the fact, that you have to go through Google to get the Nexus One.

  • Joe

    amagawd a new phone!! /sarcasm.

  • grrr

Relaunching a device with 2 new features is lame. Who are they, RIM?

  • http://www.applebythehour.com Jarrett

So, does this make 21 Android phones, or is it still 20? Before you flame, I feel like that is an important question.

This is so dumb, I got my MyTouch 3G About 3 weeks ago…

    I can’t even return my phone anymore…

Im just going to save up for a Nexus One…

    • http://www.applebythehour.com Jarrett

Might as well just save up for the Nexus Two. Or whatever the next hot Android phone will be named. The next Android superphone is always just a month or two away. No matter what you are holding the best Android phone for only a couple of weeks. Saying that, why not just wait for the Nexus Three? Use what you need now, I am sure you can make use of that MyTouch 3G for a long time to come. Or, is it that you want to be the one holding the latest phone?

My wife asked me why I don’t just get an iPhone 3GS, I said “well, my original iPhone still does everything I need it to do.” I Don’t see the point in having a device you really don’t need. Your MyTouch is fine.

      • Zach

Tanks for not hating on android like all the other iphone F***faces :D

      • Geez

This is true, but the addition of the headphone jack renders mine not so fine.

  • Matt

    I like the new name!

  • mingkee

    The title misses “3.5mm jack”

  • michael

sounds like a dumb down version of the Fender Version…. but oh well.

    • mingkee

I say it’s Fender version with different color. Hardware stays the same (with 3.5mm audio jack).

      • michael

i see, i see. I know my dad just picked up a Fender Edition of the MT3G… it’s a nice phone, but i personally don’t like 100% pure touch screen phones. If the MT3G/slyder has 2.1 we might have a match made in heaven.

  • Danny

More RAM and a 3.5 mm jack is cool.

I like the myTouch, but the original was well underpowered for my taste.

I think it’s a great mid range Android phone for most people. Obviously the geeks won’t agree but then again do they ever?

So yes, I won’t buy it for myself but I’d like to get one for my sister and mother.

  • mikee

HTC should have updated the G1, instead.

  • Danny

The new myTouch series with a slide out keyboard should fill that void mikee.

lol @ T-mobile. Doesn’t anyone else see the ploy? A majority of T-mobile’s subscriber base consists of subscribers who prefer their low rate plans and desire phones which they can customize, have cool names, or some other niche.

T-mobile captilizes on this phenomenom of reduced rate plans by re-releasing the same phone, with the same hardware, but minor enhancements. Sometimes, they push the envelope even further and attach a celebrity’s name to the phone with some personal markups, hike up the price of the phone, and promote it under the term “limited edition”

We saw this with Sidekick line being constantly re-released with no “major changes” but rather more personalization. This MyThouch phone has already been relased twice (original and Fender), but they turn around and release it again for a third time for the niche who want a 3.5 mm jack.

I am in no means bashing T-mobile as I am a loyal subscriber, I am just dumbfounded to understand if it is excellent marketing or the dumbness of the consumer base to realize the company is releasing the same phone over and over again with minor changes, yet charging full price for a phone inferior to others on the market.

No doubt, this phone will sell itself out in a plethora of stores. It is with complete certainty some confused person with a MyTouch3G (original) will feel the need to upgrade, extend the contract, pay more for a phone they currently have because …. wait for it …. they can’t live without that 3.5 mm jack!

your comment is kind of silly do you not realize everyone does the same thing like verizon with the EnV or AT&T with the iPhone they release the same thing with better features there is a lot more examples pre and pixi plus, instinct, enV, iphone, touchpro, etc all of them are pretty much the same with minor improvements nothing groundbreaking

    • Geez

But you have to understand having a headphone jack is a big deal. I personally think is a big pain in the butt to have to pair it up to my Bluetooth every time i want to listen to my music. Honestly keeping up with the stupid dongle proved to be to much because it spouted legs a week after I got the phone.

  • StevenGlansburg

Screw this nonsense.. where is the DROID 2 info? It’s supposed to be out in June to try and counteract the 4th gen iphone. It’s going to have Android 3.14 on it and a 5.2 mega pixel camera… I’m already in line.

  • Geez

Did anyone else see a slide on that phone?

    • Blake

there isn’t one… they said “swipe soft keyboard”… nothing new here.

  • David Hammer

my droid won’t sync calendar w/ exchange server. i’ve reinstalled my account twice and no luck. any ideas?

  • Malibu3js

Well I was offered this phone yesterday but opted to buy the Nexus One only to find out that I didn’t qualify for the Nexus One discount (Tmobile isn’t the one selling the phone – Google is) because Google is being very strict on their discount guidelines so even though Tmo was giving an early discount upgrade for the MyTouch, Google wouldn’t honor that same deal with the Nexus One. All this AFTER Tmobile had me switch my really good family rate plan to a shitty individual plan (Google will only sell the phone on individual plans) and now I’m paying $10 more a month (because they can’t bring back my original family plan) AND I don’t have a new phone! Needless to say I will wait for Nexus One to be available for Verizon and become a new customer and get the cheaper rate knowing that eventually I’ll get shitted on my them as well but hey, I rather get treated like shit as a new customer then an existing 11 year LOYAL customer with Tmobile. They broke my heart and I will never go back!

is a big pain in the butt to have to pair it up to my Bluetooth every time i want to liste.. is a big pain in the butt to have to pair it up to my Bluetooth every time i want to liste
