Motorola has an oopsie, Android 2.1 update for the DROID not rolling out this week?

Rumor

droid-21-update-moto-forums

Potentially bad news for DROID owners as word out of Motorola’s support forums suggest that the Motorola DROID will not see the rumored 2.1 update drop this week. According to Matt, forums manager over at Motorola, the information was prematurely released. A little investigating also reveals that the DROID update page on Motorola’s website has been pulled and all links to the update page have been deleted from the forums. Anyone a bit confused and disappointed by this potential delay?

Ohh well.. no biggie.. the interest and posts about it caused me to look into other options.. I went and got the smupdater from sholes.info and rooted my phone and upgraded it to Sholesmod 2.03.. easy as pie for the whole process just have to go past all the warnings the updater gives you, follow pretty simple instructions and done.. faster better gallery, and can add gallery/picasa pictures to contacts.. liking it pretty well so far.. no problems..

    what do you mean?..

I really, really, really want the DROID and thankful I decided to wait until the end of my contract in mid-March. Updates should be pushed by then and hopefully the Nexus One will be available on Verizon as well. I can physically hold both phones and tool around with them before making an impulse buy.

    • JT

Nexus One most likely won’t be in VZW stores. You’ll have to find someone who owns one.

wouldnt it be cool if google was actually listening to all the people who were upset about certain things being left out of the update and delaying it to add those features… one can hope… hell let the boys do their thing… DROID is solid as is and will only be better whenever this 2.1 hits…

No where at all does that say anything about the update being delayed. In fact, the same guy clarified himself by saying he was only referring to the release notes.

    Welcome to TMZBGR.

    • Mikee

Yeah, after reading the entire thread, the Moto employee makes it clear that the notes weren’t supposed to be released early. He says absolutely nothing about the update being delayed.

  • shane

I was really looking forward to this update. It is needed and there needs to be some urgency with it.

  • Moosa

can someone please provide a link to the official release notes? Thanks!

  • JT

The Moto Forum thread seems to indicate that the update is still coming this week.

The mistake on Moto made was to post the update spec sheet and support page early.

I’M FREAKING PISSSSSSSSSED. THIS MAKE NO FREAKING SENSE AT ALL. THEY SHOULD HAVE SOLD THE FREAKING 2.1 OS WITH THE DAMN DROID, IT COST ENOUGH. MAN, I’M BEING TURNED WAAAAY OFF BY ALL THOSE INVOLVED: VERIZON, MOTOROLA AND GOOGLE. ALL I KNOW IS THAT THIS UPDATE BETTER BE ON POINT AND WITHOUT BUGS BECUASE THEY HAD TOOOO MUCH TIME NOT TO GET IT RIGHT. THIS WILL TELL ME WHO WE’RE DEALING WITH.

    • chaz

then go buy a nexus 1 and switch to sprint
i’m just glad we are getting the update sometime
not like blackberrys or other phones that never get updates at all

      • chaz

        sorry tmobile

    • PeterK

Got to love people who are clueless about what it takes to develop a product, then complain that they can’t have their precious update today. I’ll wait patiently for the next update. I can already do more with this phone that I ever dreamed of.

        yeah ,they do

  • T

The update will come out after verizon cripples the hell out of it. Not one second sooner! I should know, I have a whole stack of crippled bloated handsets I’m starring at… all from verizon. I’m done with them!!

    • T

Hahahahaha… Verizon hasn’t crippled a smartphone in years. Maybe you should try some cursory internet research… you wouldn’t need to impersonate people and could maybe even make intelligible posts.

This is why the iPhone is so successful, and will stay dominant. Google’s Android is competing against other Android devices. Apple’s iPhone doesn’t compete against itself. What Google is doing with the help of Motorola and VZ, is making sure the Droid doesn’t compete directly with its N1 device. Put in simply, Droid will never have features, or be visually on par with anything Google offers direct to its customers. Any Android device on the market not from Google will be one or even two steps behind. That’s why I believe HTC will be the Android device maker of choice. Because they will never go toe to toe with Google, there IU will always be unique. Not to mention they are the makers of Googles only device. Watch, Motorola will change their UI of ever other Android device they create, the Moto Droid will be the last of it kind.

You do realize that Motorola is currently making a phone that will be sold directly by Google. Android isn’t really competing against it self so much as offering many different choices (as in high-end or budget devices) and form factors for consumers. The iPhone OS isn’t a viable option for everyone since it is only provided in a single form factor, not including the iPad (which technically is the same form factor but just larger). The iPhone OS is to restrictive for me personally, but the average consumer probably doesn’t mind since it “just works” out of the box without any tweaking.

Nice… now the clone-trolls are going to different topics to say things? I already weighed in on this… my opinion hasn’t changed. Life will go on.

It’s good that I picked an N1 phone than this one. The update was a breeze. Details to help: http://bit.ly/nexus-one-official-ota-details

First off maybe motorola leaked the specs of 2.1 to see what all us droid owners were going to bitch about like the 3d app drawer and some other little things and maybe they decided to add it in or they found a way to make it work. Anyway don’t rush these updates cause I’m sure a lot of us came from a blackberry storm and it took 6 months for an update and the phone still blew so let motorola and verizon get it right because they do not want to tarnish their flagship phone just my two cents

    • joe

nope. I hope you are not really thing thats why they leaked it..We are not getting any of that..And the bums couldnt even give us live wallpapers..Now tell me .how is that android 2.1? So instead of giving us the whole package they are removing things..bunch of crap if i say so

  • donovan

who cares, i disabled OTA anyway.. AdamZ 4.1 pwns Moto’s shitty 2.1 crippled update..

  • Debbie

Didn’t you love your Droid before the 2.1 was mentioned? I will continue to enjoy my Droid and look forward to what the 2.1 update has when it is available.

  • zack

Nooo I hate you motorola!… Punkk ass tricksss!

  • joe

This crap with the updates for the droid is getting out of hand..Just release the damn thing for gods sake..We pay all this money for these phones and we have been getting dicked around for months now..Stop accidently putting crap out there to get our hopes up..Im considering getting rid of android seeing this is going to be a pain to get updates..

  • joe

This 2.1 update does not sound like its going to do much of anything..And i believe its not anything like the nexus1 2.1 I guess things will be removed like live wallpapers and some other things..So when you get your update dont be suprised if you compare the 2.1 on nexus to the droid its going to be alot different. Oh and by the way , WHERE THE HELL IS FLASH 10.1?

  • mb

WTF? All i want is Flash for the Droid.
