Android 2.1 update for the Motorola DROID rolling out this week

Software

Motorola DROID users as a whole are a pretty happy bunch, but after finally getting their first taste of official multi-touch, we can’t help but blame them for wanting a whole lot more. The good news on this front is that Android 2.1 for the DROID will be made available next week, according to Motorola’s Facebook page. Motorola has not detailed what the update will encompass, but here’s what Engadget has been told:

  • The current test build is Android 2.1 version 1
  • The browser will have multi-touch
  • Google Googles is pre-installed
  • No visual changes to the homescreen or app drawer
  • Active wallpapers aren’t included, but the fancy widgets that made their debut with the Nexus One are

Most of us probably agree that things like multi-touch in the browser are big news, but we can’t help but eagerly wait to see what all the Negative Nancy’s out there have to say about some of the nifty features that will allegedly be left behind. Regardless, we’ll be sure to give you all a shout as soon as the update starts trickling out.

Actually, it says the Motorola’s own Facebook page confirms the update for this week. The info on Engadget is just speculation about the contents of the update.

Multitouch in the browser will be nice, but what about the keyboard? That is where it really matters to me. Double tap to zoom is good enough.

it might be a newbie question but what are the advantages of a multitouch keyboard?

      • Kevin

Multi-touch on the keyboard lets you type faster without it missing strokes. If you have typed on the iPhone keyboard and the Droid keyboard for an extended amount of time you probably have noticed the difference. Part of the difference is due to multi-touch.

      • kudz

gotcha. I use Swype so I never really use the stock keyboard on my DROID. I’m guessing the advantages are somewhat similar?

    uh-oh!

Does anyone know if this update will fix the endless mystery surrounding the email/activesync issues? I think there are hundreds of threads on the Droid site but no real solutions that actually fix the problems for good. It’s a pain in the ars.

    • Dave Brown

I’m with you and I find if funny to see the general interest is in more features and not just fixing the ones that are already out there, namely the email/activesync/account deletion. It seems clear that the combo of VZW/Motorola/Google don’t give a shit about making it work.

Things could be worse, a lot worse, own an iPhone, then any Droid troubles seem minor.

Google Maps 4.0 is up on the Android Market… includes new Google Buzz social networking. It’s also available for iPhone as its own Google Buzz app.

I didn’t mean to post that bit.ly link to BGR, I couldn’t stop it after it was sending.

Ugh.. and here I am with JF 1.5 on my g1 (cry)

    This is delayed

  • armando

so is there a possibility i can brick my phone trying to root it? ive been waiting for the 2.1 update, but it seems like the rooted versions might be better than 2.1 so….

for a complete newbie, what would some of you more experienced folks recommend?

@Dave Brown- it’s has nothing to do with Motorola or google it has everything to do with verizon. That’s why by the end of this year verizon will be bankrupt and Mr Jobs (Apple) won’t touch them EVER! They are device cripplers and bloatware masters. To bad there will never be an iPhone on verizon, it’s far superior ( OS and build quality ) to what’s availible on verizon or any carrier for that matter.

You sound about as knowledgeable on Technology as Sarah Palin is on Politics…

    hey,

it seems that its a just another update without any serious kind of updated features !!! but still it is a update we have to check it :-)

Thanks again Magnum for the great post.

    Yay

It’s kinda funny that the 2.1 3D app drawer and Live Wallpapers are pretty much the only features of 2.1 that haven’t already been available on rooted Droids through custom ROMs and such. Plus these ROMs have other enhancements such as re-skinned UI & widgets, wireless tethering, various Milestone enhancements like multi-touch photo gallery, FLAC support and most important of all Stable Overclocking at 950MHz which makes this phone scream. Seems that the custom 2.0.1 ROMs are better than the official 2.1 update that everyone’s been waiting for.

Google “Bugless Beast” if you’re interested.

    • eNonsense

Actually, now that I remember, the 3D app drawer and Live Wallpapers have infact already been available in Droid ROMs but they are pretty unstable and aren’t included in the popular Bugless Beast ROM that I use.

Magnum….thanks for the post. Very nice.

Seriously though, the real Miguel needs to get a hobby quick. To the “real” Miguel: Please move out of your mom’s basement and get a job. Thank you. That is all.
