RIM BlackBerry Internet Service 3.0 details leak, improves Gmail experience

General

BIS 3 Gmail Details

BBLeaks got their hands on some RIM training documentation that details new features included in the yet-to-be-scheduled BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.0 update. Some of the documented improvements include:

  • Gmail read/unread status will now sync on handsets with Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in and BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher
  • Create and delete labels on device with Enhanced Google Mail Plug-in and BlackBerry OS 4.6 or higher
  • Support for additional attachment types, including: OpenDocument presentations (.odp), OpenDocument spreadsheets (.ods), OpenDocument text (.odt), OpenDocument text templates (.ott), and Windows Media Audio (.wma)
  • BlackBerry smartphone users will be instructed to contact their specific carrier and will be
provided with carrier contact information in HTML and WAP error messages.

The Gmail functionality and extra attachment support are definitely welcome additions to BIS’ repertoire; it does, unfortunately, leave all other BIS IMAP users out in the cold.

    Oh?

Currently if you read an email on your BB, it will show as being read on your computer gmail…but if you read an email on your computer, it will stay as unread on your BB. That part will be fixed so it syncs both ways.

Oh yeah…. thanks! I was scratching my head for a second there.

  • Mrwirez

I never owned a BB, what is the significance of read/unread with a BB?

    Dear RIM,

As a BB user what we need is a positive Internet experience. A reliable smartphone and then you can address the gmail and the other issues with your software…

  • hammad

BB was always about email. It was built on email and never a positive internet experience.

    • I screwed LaToya’s Mom

Yup I know, but I think it’s time to put a little bit more than email for 2010. I’m not asking for a software change, just a smartphone that does it all, like on their advertisement.

      That’s it.

  • unlock code?

are you planning on ever dishing out those free unlock codes or was that whole contest/blog entry just some spam attemp to get us to buy one from them?

Will this fix the issue with the comingled inboxes on BES? (For those that don’t know–if you have a BB activated on a corporate email account using a BES, any additional BIS email accounts that you add to the BB share the SAME inbox as the corporate.)

For some that’s OK but for others [like me] it’s a disaster having work and personal emails mixed and is bad enough that I removed my Gmail account and instead am stuck using Google’s below-average BlackBerry Gmail application instead.

    • Fabrizio

It was fix in Firmware 5.0

      • Ener Ji

Oh really? I have a Bold 9700 (OS 5) but it doesn’t behave that way. Do I have to get the BES software upgraded to OS 5 too?

    • BES Admin

You can have a border applied to your BIS accounts (sorry one for all) or the border on your corporate email.

You can also ask your BES admin to run a script that will make a seperate corporate email messages icon. The downside is you cannot presently edit the name of the corporate icon (default is desktop)

Can’t wait for the ODF (OpenDocument Format) support – I’ve been begging for this for YEARS now!

  • Graham

When….When is RIM going to come out with something that can sync Mail, Contacts, Calendar etc with Exchange / OWA without having to buy a BES like almost every other smartphone provider does?

    • BES Admin

Unless you have a service account you won’t have Push email (ActiveSync is quasi push) BES is now free and it’s really about managing a mobile deployment.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a joke? This is 2010. Why can’t BlackBerry just implement IMAP? Why not? I have an iPhone, with 4 IMAP accounts. They are all in perfect sync across my iPhone, two MacBook Pros, and the web (obviously). It’s so simple. It just works.

I think the email experience on a BlackBerry is just a fucking joke. How can they expect to compete with this shit?

    • ljp

They seem to be doing just fine. Maybe there’s a reason their email system operates the way it does? Hmmmmmm.

    • alen

but then there won’t be any need for the RIM cloud and the billions of $$$ they spent on it.

What about deleted items syncing from GMail to the Blackberry? And filed items? It drives me crazy seeing deleted and moved items in the BB inbox.

  • Kiro

I think that RIM have to do something with their bb browser-the most disaster thing, which I have saw till now,app memory-also another one disaster thing
I’ll go the next month to buy one Iphone, simply because now I have big problems with my bb(every 20min.I have to reboot…)it’s not seriously….

Get back to me when they add IMAP folder support.

It’s 2010, and I can’t see IMAP folders on more than one non-gmail account. Even if I have BES.

If I don’t have BES, then I don’tg et IMAP folder functionality at all.

Phones whose claim to fame wasn’t email have gotten this right for years. Why not RIM?

  • http://rossmanngroup.com Louis Rossmann

At least one person apparently enjoys not having IMAP folders on a handheld email device.

Why on Earth doesn’t BIS have live sync with Outlook? Make it the same as with the USB cable. Make it so. Of course they won’t. Wait til Windows Phone 7 comes out. Live sync with Outlook is a given. Bye Bye Blackberry.
