Microsoft to pull the plug on Xbox Live for the original Xbox console and Xbox games

Microsoft is slowly pushing original Xbox owners to upgrade to the Xbox 360. The software giant discontinued the original Xbox in late 2008 and officially stopped supporting the aging console in March 2009. In a final effort to encourage folks to upgrade, Microsoft has announced that it will be pulling the plug on Xbox Live for all original Xbox consoles and Xbox-compatible games starting April 15th. Folks that are stuck in the early 2000′s still playing Halo 2 will have two good months of retro game playing left before their connection goes dead and they must either make the long-avoided jump to the Xbox 360 or be forced to play their multiplayer games in isolation. When that time of crisis inevitably comes, prepare yourself to pack away that Xbox for posterity sake, trade in that copy of Blood Wake for Bioshock 2 and step into the next generation of gaming. Big Daddy promises that you won’t be disappointed.

    360 FTW I’m not hatin in ps3 but it don’t have any good games that aren’t on the 360 u got killzone uncarterd2 little big planet ,MGS4 and GOW3 when that comes out but MGS rising is coming to 360 later this year oh yeah and blu ray but I’m not gona spend 50 on a DVD I been very Dissatisfied with my ps3 and like my 360 better oh yeah free online ill give that to the ps3

      The only advantage the 360 has over PS3 is the online experience. The PS3 is a much better system overall. The average price at best buy for a blue ray DVD is 30 dollars. BTW, I own a 360 and a Wii.

    This is no different than what they do on other fronts (use office to sell a newer windows [thru incompatibility], stop issuing security patches to sell newer windows …). It’s not only Microsoft … Intuit stops allowing 3 year old quicken from downloading data. This is the price we all pay for buying products which require continued active support from a seller motivated to sell us bigger/better/faster.

    Yet another issue with vendor hosted online games.

    On a whim, I installed Unreal Tournament from 1999 on my computer recently. People are still running servers for it, lots of them.

    You can still get a game going because the control is in the hands of the people who play the game, instead of people who want you to buy the next product.

    I love my PS3, but if Sony start charging for PSN, I’m building a gaming PC.

    Wondering if someone could help with my question. When they pull the plug will we need to cancel our online or will they just keep draining our money?

      you will need to cancel….they’re running a business. They will assume that you will still use your gamertag on the 360

    What I was saying is you have a better gaming experience on the 360 more games and more interaction and for new blu ray dvds are about 49.99 for new releases and special edition and btw I own both 360 and PS3 and I prefer my 360 but I agree the PS3 is a good system its just that fact you have a few good games for it which has me disappointed when ur a massive gamer like I am

      You might want to double check your numbers dude, new-release BDs sell for about $29.99. And that if you choose to buy them in store. Save yourself $10 and shop online.

      This happens whenever someone even whispers “360″ or “PS3″. I have both, love both for different reasons…get over it everyone!!!

      But on topic, I thought they had pulled the plug on the original Xbox long ago, even live.

      I am one of those people. lol. After 2+ years I got finally banned around Christmas. My Wii, XBox, XBox 360 and PSP are all modded so I don’t pay for games.

      It doesn’t bother me because I don’t play online. I still download and burn games and save thousands of dollars.

      It isn’t a big secret that head to head the 360 puts out better graphics than the PS3. 360 of course has the better online environment. PS3 is a better media extender than the 360.

      Im just waiting the the PS3 to be hacked to the point where back ups can be played or saved on a hard drive.

        Huh? The PS3′s graphics are light years ahead of the 360′s. I’m assuming that’s a typo.

        Nope it isn’t. Check out the same game on both systems and XBox360 looks better. Can even check out game reviews sites such as IGN & GameTrailers who back this.

        PS3 hasn’t pushed the visual presentation but oly on a few games like Uncharted which is platform only

        Yeah, it seems most dual platform games are developed on the 360 then ported over to the PS3. I guess it’s easier for developers that way? Unfortunately, as you’ve said Ace, the porting process tends to degrade the graphics on the PS3. But take the top of the line PS3 exclusive, Uncharted 2, and the Xbox’s graphics pale in comparison.

    …I miss my Xbox, used to love that thing. Kinda sucks for all the people still using them, but business is business and I’m sure ms just wants all those people to upgrade to the 360.

    They need to fix the STILL unacceptable failure rate of the 360. I upgraded to a 360 about 9 months ago. I waited until I thought they had worked out most, if not all, the initial hardware kinks. All of a sudden those dreaded red lights come on. I never once had a problem with the original console.
