Major textbook publishers, including McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Kaplan, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt K-12, have completed a deal with software company ScrollMotion Inc. to prepare their textbook offerings for digital outlets like the iPad. Textbook publishers, having seen the impact of technology and the internet on the newspaper industry, are desperately trying to stay ahead of the technology curve and viable well into the 21st century. Rik Kranenburg, group president of higher eduction at McGraw-Hill had this to say: “Nobody knows what device will take off, or which ‘killer app’ will drive student adaptations. Today they aren’t reading e-textbooks on their laptops. But ahead we see all kinds of new instruction materials.” The Wall Street Jounal, citing a report by research firm Compass Intelligence, predicts technology spending among educational institutions will increase $14.3 billion over a five year period (tracked from 2008 to 2013); a figure publishing companies clearly are not going to ignore. Always wanted to do this….FIRST

I don’t understand why that hadn’t done this sooner, this eliminates their biggest competition, used textbooks. With it being completely digital, they will sell the same amount of books each semester and not have to worry about coming up with new editions just for the hell of it in order to sell new books. Plus the ebook version of my books were like $100 bucks cheaper a book, even cheaper than the used books, so it’s win win for everyone.

they havent done this sooner since it opens a whole new niche for pirates. so i would think that they’ve been working really hard on the securities regarding their ebooks.

They eliminated that competition a while ago, by releasing Textbook Version 2,3,4,5,etc etc. every 2 years. These versions only changed the order of the questions in the books, and re-ordered some chapters, thus making them useless for student when assigned homework or readings.

      • Fernando

Yeah, but their only real big seller is the first semester the book is being used, after that there are already used books in circulation. They also won’t have all the extra overhead from the printing of those books, all they really have to do is edit them.

maybe i should enter the field of optometry because these ipad ibooks are gonna fuck up a lot of eyes. hahaha EXCITING!!

If you read for 2 hours a day, how is it any different than the 2 hours a day you spend in front of the tv or computer screen?

      • Pieter

tv and computer screen fucks your eyes up already. this just adds to the damage. the ipad ibook will also mean that you have to focus on small letters at a close distance.

      • Pieter

go ahead and try reading an ebook on your computer. it’s like trying to focus on the bulb of a lit flashlight.

No … It’s not. The LCD screens used in mobile units like the iPhone don’t flicker like a CRT computer monitor, which is what hurts your eyes. Another thing that messes up your eyes is your having to focus on skinny black letters on a BRIGHT white background. The contrast is not very natural. That device wont be as bright and the letters will be bigger. Because the white wont be as bright, your eyes won’t have to focus as hard on the skinny black letters. Your argument only applies to CRT monitors or laptop LCD screens. I can stare at my iPhone a hell of a lot longer than I can my laptop screen.

I look forward to a time when student’s “textbooks” are updated monthly – with new, relevant information – not every other year or so.

This is a step in that right direction. :)

They should talk to RIM about security on a mobile device.

lets see if there’s good textbooks on the ipad. If so I’m in.

    • Christopher Cox

You make it sound like there will be different ebooks on the ipad than there are everywhere else. From the blog: “Major textbook publishers, including McGraw-Hill, Pearson, Kaplan, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt K-12″

You will get the same Kaplan, MacMillan, McGraw-Hill, Pearsons, etc books on iPad that you find anywhere else. And with Apple allowing freedom of pricing, publishers will be stupid NOT to use iTunes as another avenue to sell more of their publications. So … what you find on Amazon is most likely what you will find in the Apple bookstore. It’s not Amazon that publishes the books. It is the publishers that are now dumping Amazon and going to Apple (unless they strike a deal)

I’m wondering, are they still going to charge me 120 dollars for a textbook digital download? Or can I ‘rent’ the textbook like a library? Because…textbook prices are stupid insane, in fact one of my music texts’ pairing CDs cost 120 dollars (for nearly all public domain music,) when all I wanted was to spend 5 minutes ripping the 6 discs then never need it again.

Which is ridiculous ofc. And it would be ridiculous to still have to pay 120 dollars for a textbook if they don’t have to pay to print it.

    • Fernando

well, last semester one of my books was $180 for the textbook, but the digital version was only $69. It was only good for one semester but I saved over $100. Only problem was I had to break the drm so I could load it on my e-reader, so hopefully with this news they will start releasing versions I would be able to load on my reader without a hack.

The Kindle 2 offers a very large library of tens of thousands of e-books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs via Amazon’s familiar online store; With the kindle having a ‘touchscreen’, will surely make it more appealing for e-book readers to stick on their kindle now, rather than buying that pads.
