Google quietly adds group SMS to Google Voice web interface

Services

Google Voice Multi-SMS

It appears as though Google has quietly added the ability to send SMS messages to multiple contacts via its Google Voice web interface. Those who rely heavily, or primarily, on Google Voice have been requesting this feature for quite some time. There has been no official announcement from Google yet, but those of you with GV access can head over to google.com/voice and give it a whirl.

I can’t wait to use this on my DROID. Try doing that on At&t… oh wait you have no coverage anywhere or any phones that can use this .The iphone will never be able to use google voice. What POS. It’s laughable how bad At&t and the iphone are compared to the DROID and America’s best network: VERIZON WIRELESS <3

    • Leo

wow, someone was touched in his bad place as a kid..

    • Jarred

Hmmm…I’ve yet to really lose 3G coverage everywhere I’ve been. Florida, North Carolina, Colorado. When was the last time you had AT&T? I’ve had BOTH carriers simulatiously, they both work in a very similar fashion in terms of coverage. So keep spewing your uneducated rhetoric….

      • Scadole

It’s truth if you live in a major metropolitan area (NYC). Everytime i made a phone call on my iPhone it was like betting on red or black. I dropped calls like crazy and mostly stayed on edge…. they should have called it the 3EDGEs. Anyways, after moving to verizon i have yet to drop a single call in 2 years.

aside from very rural areas, my experiences with At$t were the same…. however it was the random dead spots in my city that made me mad.

      FUCKING OWNED!!!

And yeah his dad touched his pee pee when he was a little kid

    • TomTpm

your name says it all —

One thing to consider (and i hae google voice and email) – Google does have these free services but they TRACK everything about you as a user.. If you don’t mind – then it isn’;t an issue.. but it is how they make their $$$ by selling aggregated user info and for advertising..

Oh, Google Voice, when will you come to Canada?

  • Derek

Ummm, I’ve been using this since late last June. Maybe I got early access?

  • http://www.daverea.com/ MedicDave

Soooooo…what’s new about this? That SMS button has been there for a long time. Is it just that it’s now able to accommodate multiple recipients?

    • jeff

the new thing is that you can simply send the same sms to multiple contacts at once… it took me a few seconds to figure it out too because, while i use google voice on my droid, that feature should have been available from the beginning.

google voice is pretty cool because it allows me ot save $20/month on my vzw bill by not subscribing to any messaging service and i use google voice exclusively.. but there are no push notifications so it has to manually refresh and if i’m not actively using my phone it can take 0-10 minutes for it to notifiy me. it’s free so i can’t complain too much, but i think google is purposely nerfing the program to not anger verizon too much

        Cool, thanks

I use the “SMS to Email” feature in GV to get my SMS pushed via my gmail account. You can even reply directly to the email…really nice feature. Also like that it lets me save $20 on my verizon bill! :)

      • http://superbalanced.posterous.com Charles Owens

I use that too. So cool.

  • Bubba

I can’t wait to use this on my iPad!

    /kidding

  • Mrwirez

YES, Now I can officially drop texting costs from VW..
    I <3 Google Voice.. I will save $240 over my contract…

    Texting=biggest SCAM ever: 1cent/7bytes data

  • Kim

Dumb question, but when you SMS using GV does the recipient of the text see the text as coming from you GV number or your cell phone number?

    • http://www.zgilliam.com Zach Gilliam

      It shows your GV number

  • StevenGlansburg

Ok, serious question. I filled out the application for Google Voice like 4 months ago and I still haven’t gotten an invite… how do you get one? I know one who uses it so I can’t get an invite, but I wanna try it out

    • Nicki

I have an invite left, drop me an email and I’ll send you one.

      • Dale

abandoned gizmo5 user here needs gv invite thanks

  • http://webizland.blogspot.com Samarcande Jackson

Oh, Google Voice, when will you come to Canada?
    Canada

  • Jim

@Mrwirez, I figured you were a little kid. My 7 year old draws those little heart things. That explains why you talk so much shit, you can’t leave verizon because you’re on your mum and dads account!

    • Mrwirez

Try to concentrate.. Texting is a scam..1cent/7bytes of data.. That’s the point.. I love text symbols here is one JUST for you:

      …………………./´¯/)
      ………………..,/¯../
      ………………./…./
      …………./´¯/’…’/´¯¯`·¸
      ………./’/…/…./……./¨¯
      ……..(‘(…´…´…. ¯~/’…’)
      ……………………..’…../
      ……….”…………. _.·´
      ……………………..(
      …………………………

  • Nate

When I text people it shows their number, not their name unlike the image above. Is there a reason it does that or a way to change it.

  • http://superbalanced.posterous.com Charles Owens

The new html 5 GV iPhone web app works amazingly well. Plus when you add it to the homescreen it actually makes a real GV app picture rather than the weird shot of the screen it used to have.

I’ve been able to do this for a while now online and from my Droid/Tour. Nothing new, to me at least.

Can anybody tell me why I can receive calls, voicemail, and texts from my google voice account, but it won’t let me make calls from my google voice account? Thanks

  • http://www.nexeo.net Nexeo

How the hell is this news? They have done this for ever! I sent a text with my google voice account the day I set it up over a year ago!

  • Mike

Not sure why this is front page news seeing a friend sent me a Google voice invite back in March and Ive sent probably 1000′s of texts since then. This is Old BGR. Did you finally just notice it? If anyone wants a voice invite I have 6. Post your email.

    • Nick

      • Mike

Invite sent to your Gmail. Enjoy faithful BGR readers. :)

  • Kip

For all of you who are saying that this has always been available YOU ARE WRONG!! Text messaging HAS always been available, but NOT GROUP TEXTING!!! If you say you have been doing this, you either confused about what you have been doing, confused about what has changed or you are simply lying.

I was one of the first with Google Voice because I used Grand Central and they allowed us to use the first version that rolled out. Group SMS was the first suggestion I had, yet they still don’t allow you to send a mass text to a pre determined group you have created. I also suggested scheduled SMS’s, picturemail and the ability to add a signature.

This is a step in the right direction and i am sure they will add other things, but I love Google Voice.

  • david

    I would love an invite

  • http://mtxdave@ymail.com david

if you still have that last invite
    Mtxdave@ymail.com

    • http://www.zgilliam.com Zach Gilliam

      Sent…

  • Kandy

Um… sending the same text to multiple recipients is *not* group texting. That’s broadcasting your message. Group texting is 3jam, Tatango, Gogii etc. where replies from anyone in the group go back to everyone else. Like an SMS conference.

  • Alex

If anyone has an extra invite to spare, i’d be appreciative as i’m excited to test it out. email addy’s in comments above.

  • Marlon

I would love to experience Google Voice, but I can’t seem to get an invite after 3 requests.

    • MJ

      Push notifications have now arrived…..hurray!

  • Dale

I am a gizmo5 user and would greatly appreciate an invite for google voice seeing as how just about nothing works on gizmo5 anymore thanks.
