Google provides tool for Mac users to upload email to Google Apps

Google Uploader for Mac

For some, there is quite a bit of anxiety involved in switching from one email system to another. What will become of all your old emails from family/friends, your precious email attachments containing hundreds of hours of video featuring LOLCats, or the 400 copies of that one chain letter your partially senile grandfather forwards you every two weeks? Well, it looks like if you’re a Mac user ready to jump over to Google Apps, there is no need to panic, because the Big G is looking to alleviate this anxiety for you. Recently, Google released a migration tool that will allow users of Apple Mail, Thunderbird, or Eudora to upload all their email to Google Apps and seamlessly make the switch. The tool, which already has a Windows counterpart, will only work with Google Apps and not with the more popular gmail.com or googlemail.com services. Hit up the official press release for all the details.

And this is different from just connecting to your Google app mail account with an imap client and just copying over your mail how?

Why does Google even bother to update software to be compatible with a closed system like OSX & MaxiPad’s?

    • Betty White

Just to piss off the Dirk’s of the world who can’t afford a MacBook Pro.

    • es

      Yeah, closed…

      …like windows.

why is it so cliche to be into technology and hate Apple? They simplified an over complicated system in many instances and made complicated things easier to swallow for mass consumption. I love my custom built PC just as much as I love my MacBook Pro. Can’t we just all get a long?

    Honestly, who cares about Mac’s?

I think you meant Macs. Unless you forgot to include the property before the question mark.

I did this with Windows Live Mail a long time ago. Just set the new Apps account up in Live Mail as an IMAP account, then cut and paste from my other mail server which was also set up as IMAP. Done.

Finally a voice of reason! Discussed the topic instead of bashing windows vs mac. Thank you Andy S.

Hey man. I know you’re a huge apple software/hardware fan… but I’m just wondering why you can not support a legitimate, equal opinion between apple products and specifically google products.

    Let’s get drunk-nasty…

I feel like apple has taken it to your asshole on numerous occasions without complaint (from you). Had the iphone ever had a penis, you would have murdered to be the first to make it cum. and murdered with a fierce, sexual passion.

I have one, extremely simple idea. Very, very simple. So simple I myself might make poopie in my panties. Stop playing apple to be an innovator.

The ipad wasn’t the first of its kind.

Apple didn’t have google voice first.

Google supports internet-based phone calls on android cells phones, and has for a while, (while apple has unwarrantedly supported it via mobile web for about two weeks).

Little “boy genius” please open your mind as wholly as you have ignorantly opened your backside to the creator of the ipod. I like your reviews, but the blatant one-sidedness of late is growing verrrrry verrry old.

I don’t know what could be more worse than not to add a GPS capability like the ones from garmin on this model, I mean its 2010 already, right? GPS should be a part of our normal lives. GPS details: http://bit.ly/diy-gps-guide

Used it yesterday to upload 46,000 old emails sitting in my inbox. Natively supports Apple Mail and Thunderbird, does not support Entourage, and you can point it to any Maildir or Mbox.

Worked fine. It’s rate limited, the first 500 messages burst to the server, after that it uploads 1 message per second, so my transfer took 16 hours.

It detects duplicate messages. My only concern is that it freaks out if your internet connection drops out, and I’m not sure if it retries messages when you go back online. i’ll probably try to redo the whole upload late in the week to make sure I didn’t miss any messages.

  • Dimplemonkey

What about a Google migration tool for Entourage users? And… if I ever want to leave or locally archive my google email, can this be done as well?
